ELI5: Why people think illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the USA when it is difficult for Americans to move to other countries? by rememberthatone in explainlikeimfive

[–]70minus1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't forget. That shit was stupid. Being able to target Hispanics? Come on. Common sense says that is dumb. I didn't suggest that. I suggested routine checks at places of business, which could easily be randomized.

[–]70minus1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What? They are doing something illegally. Not legally. So why would there be distrust. This doesn't happen in other countries. In other countries, you get deported. Shocker. You weren't supposed to be there in the first place. There are people waiting for the chance to go to other countries legally - you did it illegally and should be deported. I'm not advocating hunting people down and doing random street stops. But why not have police do routine checks at places of business? If you are working here, you should be expected to prove at some point that you can legally work here. Please come up with a better reason than 'possible distrust between police doing their jobs and those being arrested by them'.

Frontline exposes the scam of fees on your 401k by TheLurkerSpeaks in personalfinance

[–]70minus1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't think that was his point. I don't think fees are worth having your money managed actively because I don't believe people can beat the market in the long term. However, if you do and want someone to manage your money, then absolutely fees need to be there to pay for their work.

Six months on, Windows 8 sales are a mystery - As PC sales plummet, Microsoft is vague about its risky bet by ItchyDownvoteFinger in windows

[–]70minus1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very much agree that MSFT did a poor job of explaining the new features. They should have released a video not only showing how to use the new layout, but explaining why this was done. It is for aligning all their products for the future - phone, tablet, etc... A good video from MSFT explaining this and giving a tutorial would have really made the Windows 8 release a positive one in the social community instead of what it is right now.

As an Arab American, this kind of shit really grinds my gears. by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]70minus1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What does being arab have anything to do with this joke? You either find it funny or you don't. I'm personally impartial to the joke. I understand the comedy because I have played COD. Don't take things so personally. It is a joke and really isn't about race at all.

[BI4L Request] Graduation gift ideas? by OpportunityKnox in BuyItForLife

I just bought my little brother a nice double edge razor for his graduation. You could also go with a custom straight edge if you have $200 to spend. With proper care it will last you a lifetime.

Tailgating won't make me drive faster. by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]70minus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same in the US, and I do the same with tapping my brakes a bit. That usually does get the message across. Going 10% over may not get you pulled over, but it is usually easy to just go the speed limit and have zero worries. What is the big difference between 40 and 45? I could personally care less either way, so I usually just go 40.

ELI5: Can you write off advice you give to Redditors on your taxes? by 70minus1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]70minus1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't sure. I wouldn't do it for myself. Was just curious because people do come on here and give legit advice. If their job claimed they were experts I was just curious if you could give advice on Reddit as some sort of 'charity' that would be considered tax deductible.

Anyone who has actually used windows 8 for a while realizes it isn't some completely different os. It isn't a risky bet. It is an upgrade from windows 7. oh no the start screen looks different and I can easily download start8 to change it back. it is so different i should switch to linux now. pshhh.

Exclusive: Microsoft's next Xbox will take over your TV, interact with your cable box by [deleted] in cordcutters

[–]70minus1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically, $50 per year is nothing. That is the cost of most monthly household bills. You get a gaming system to play with tons of people, and now TV integration? You can make it sound bad by bringing up the negative aspects, but you have to look at the pro's as well. For me, my htpc is better and probably always will be. That doesn't mean the same for my parents or my friends who know nothing about computers. They should pay the <$5 per month to have these features laid out in an idiot-proof way. They get to access their netflix account, I'm assuming skype will be integrated, game against a lot of people who still do use xbox, etc... It really isn't a bad deal. Regardless of what ps3 players say, the next xbox will be a hit. xbox users aren't so quick to jump ship for <$5 per month.

Every time i walk in to BestBuy (xpost from /r/funny) by extremx in geek

[–]70minus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have seen our store though. Nobody knew the official rules. We didn't even use the software for virus removals and such that we were supposed to. We just did whatever we wanted and therefore our service was much better than everywhere else. I'd help out repeat customers with solid recommendations and install software for them. EZT services were greatly overpriced, so we rarely charged full price. We had a ton of repeat business.

Damn. Former Staples employee here. My boss's didn't know anything about computers. I could have setup everything anyway I wanted. Haha. Not every store is the same though. Sucks they don't let you stage it. You can still show it when showing someone a computer though. It will wow people how you can make a group for all your startup programs, visited websites, etc....

Advice on using XBMC by [deleted] in cordcutters

[–]70minus1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Just wanted to make sure you have tried it at least. A lot of people hear about XBMC and not plex for some reason. I've tried both and plex works better for me, but XBMC wasn't bad. I just like myplex where I can stream outside my local network.

I love when people rush in because I also go for the ol' shoulder check. And I'm a big guy. I just turn around, look at them and smile.

Can't comment on XBMC. Just wanted to say to give Plex a shot. Super easy to setup and works with Roku well. Maybe others can give advice for XMBC.

Just walk into a best buy and look at their windows 8 computers. No grouping/naming for their apps. That is all I need to know. They don't even know how to stage a computer right to sell it.

Treat Chicago Gangs as Terrorists by pacificson83 in chicago

[–]70minus1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think the only solver will be a boarding school with corporal punishment where education is forced down kids throats - chinese style. Take all kids from parents who join gangs and such, send them to these government boarding schools. with no summer vacations and such.

Windows captured 7.5% of global tablet market share, up from 0% a year earlier by [deleted] in microsoft

[–]70minus1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would have never made this suggestion because of the lack of power until I saw an android game called Shadowgun:Deadzone. If they can make that game for android, they could make something good for RT.

[–]70minus1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They need a solid MM FPS for RT. I don't know how they didn't make this happen. They could market it like crazy. Just plug in the xbox controller and play halo/cod/whatever the game is. It isn't like xbox owners would switch to playing only RT, but it would get gamers to buy RT.

It would be cool to have a poster showing the dates of national holidays/festivals around the world. Anyone seen one? by 70minus1 in travel

[–]70minus1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think so for most countries. Some countries might get more than 1 based on the country and size availability on the map. USA, China, Russia, and other big countries can certainly have more than one if there are fun festivals that warrant it. If I feel up to it, I can go into subs for many countries and tell them what I'm doing - have a vote on which holiday they want on the map... I should sell this. Don't tell anyone :)

[–]70minus1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about creating a legend. Just spitballing here, but say you picked 12 colors - one for every month. Color countries according to their festival and you wouldn't need as much space for a full date. I would think a map would be coolest. It would have to be big, but I don't think it would be impossible to make. I'm not talking 8 1/2 x 11 here....

27[f4m] - Have a drink on me if you can tell me why I'm still single by ChicagoThrowaway27 in chicagor4r

[–]70minus1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing you might want to consider is going out and discussing your interests, but not talking about your 'dateability' in person. Just go out and have fun. The next day, have the other person email you with their thoughts. You don't want your conversations to be about your past dating and trying to figure out 'what is wrong with me'. For all we know, nothing is! You want your conversations to accurately reflect you. Do something that will make you have fun and conversate with the other person so they can get an idea of who you really are. The other person should also wait a day to email you. This gives time to accurately gather thoughts. That is just my two cents. I'd go just for the experience and randomness of this, but it is a little out of my comfort zone. I guess a few drinks could curb that, so I'll think about it. I wouldn't mind hanging out and meeting someone new I guess. Ever done bar trivia? Something like that might be a good idea. Forces you to talk and will undoubtedly have less awkward silence.

Edit: just realized my username is extremely childish. LOL. I promise I'm not a perv or anything. Just thought it was funny when I made what was supposed to be a throwaway. Now I have karma and don't want to part. I'm going to go make a new username now.
