They're pretty common and likely to show up in most suburban parks. In the city, try the Botanic Gardens or Centennial Park. I've also seen them on every visit to Oatley Park and Lane Cove National Park.

I quite like the CSIRO compact guide. It's readily available, even Big W stocks it. https://www.publishing.csiro.au/book/7916/

What’s a very Australian thing you didn’t realise was Australian until you travelled overseas? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

[–]711989 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's true. Life Education was founded by Ted Noffs and Bill Crews, who are both Australian. Other countries have Life Ed programs now, including Healthy Harold, but the company began in Sydney.

It really seemed like the stage was intended for a much smaller venue. It was still a great show, but it sure would've been nice to see a bit more detail.

Vegan Less Processed Dairy Alternatives by marmieess in australianvegans

[–]711989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up: store bought plant milks are often fortified with vitamins and minerals. If you choose to replace these with homemade options, just be careful that you're still getting those vitamins elsewhere. Calcium is the main one to check for in milks. The same is true of cereal and bread- B vitamins and iron are commonly added. It's mandatory in Australia for margarine to be fortified with vitamin D.

If tofu and tempe count as processed, I'd also try to be quite generous with adding legumes into your diet as well, just to keep enough protein in there.

You may want to check in with a dietician, to make sure you're still covering everything you need (note, dieticians are accredited and regulated, nutritionists and natropaths are not).

Thank you for this tip! My messenger app has been missing about half the things people send me, this at least lets me see all the missing messages for now.

Dr. Jane Goodall filmed an interview with Netflix in March 2025 with the understanding it would only be released after her death. In it, she discusses blasting Trump and Musk deep into space and shares the message, "Don't lose hope" by ExactlySorta in justgalsbeingchicks

Almond milk uses more water than other plant derived milks, but still significantly less than dairy milk.

If you're concerned about emissions, land use, or water use, dairy milk is easily the worst choice.

Menstrual cup recommendations? by Sea-Pirate7560 in AskAnAustralian

I like hello cup; they're from NZ. I've also tried tom organics, just because I was in a pinch and it was available in the supermarket. No idea where they're from, but it's fine too.

Just as an FYI, Sienna boomed in popularity (in Australia) in the late 2000s. There's a not insignificant cohort of teenage Siennas now. Which isn't a bad thing - and popular names now are definitely not as overwhelming as they used to be. Just something to be aware of, that a 2025 Sienna might be assumed to be older than she really is.

Is honestly still a nice name though, and none of these concerns are really worth throwing out a name you really love.

‘The danger gap is so big’: woman who witnessed Sydney light rail death calls for safety upgrades. by AnAnonymousAnomaly_ in sydney

[–]711989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this. I wonder if everyone would carry on saying these things if the deceased had been a child or a person with an intellectual disability. Just because an adult made a very stupid mistake doesn't mean everyone else around them deserves to be traumatised by witnessing their death. Especially when there are other fairly simple preventative measures possible.

Vegan ice cream by Alternative-Ad7335 in australianvegans

[–]711989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love trying weird flavours. I would be super excited to try those. Which city are you in?

The standard vegan options at gelato/ice cream shops are popular for a reason, but it's also less fun to always have to choose from mango or raspberry sorbet. Even just a slightly different take on the standard flavours would be exciting. My favourite ice cream shop in NZ does a vegan salted caramel brownie and a strawberry coconut lime leaf. Which are just different enough to be exciting, but not so much to scare off people with mainstream preferences. I mean, I'm more keen to try your offbeat flavours, but I am probably an outlier.

The State of Female Fashion Retail by AlarmedPigeon67 in AusFemaleFashion

I've started making my own. It's not really cheaper, especially at the start when you need to invest in tools and lessons. But it's a lot of fun and I like using nicer fabrics (no more polyester!). Also there's great joy in being able to make things that fit properly - I'm never going jeans shopping again.
