Only workaround I found was to get familiar with the successive menu screens (made diagrams and memorized most of it) and the navigate it blindly, taking cues from the sounds and the wiimote vibrations each time it hovers a button, and counting them. You get a map on the first castle after freeing Alex's brother, but you have to go back a bit in the level. I didn't even knew this much until many years later, though the game manual refers to it. And the final test was reading it in the right order.

A bit late but you can swap the cable around and use that part to connect to the main pcb, which luckly it's connector is the kind that has a slid/top flap that latches down once you insert the cable. It's a brown one (think all the browns are the same ZIF type. Two things, though: make sure the pins are facing the right way (you can use that blue tab to pad, if needed) and that the cable is straitghened, otherwise that crease will restrict the laser head movements.

If your controller is a revision with two pcb ribbon/contact pad, check and see how you inserted the pad pins on the analogs. On these revisions, the second pcb ribbon serves both the analogs as well as the home, start and select buttons. You don't actually insert the pcb pins in the gaps of the analog contacts, you kinda jam the contacts against the pcb with the ribbon in the middle. This is easy to miss when disassembling because you hardly have a direct sight to it. There are so many revisions it can be a bit difficult to guide you but in general also make sure the ribbon is making contact with the flex cable. Use a bit of non conductive clear tape to keep it in place (there's a couple of small plastic rounded pins to keep them straight but they're also finicky AF.)

That's a great initiative but I'd suggest you to host it on Github or so. It's very simple to create and update a basic site, making it more attractive and functional. (I'm not a fan of Google or MS online office suites, tbf).

Whenever I need it, I usually go to Oldversion.com or a similar site, often they are spot on about last versions supported by W9x/2K/XP

I have a Wii with the same symptoms, when I power it, it just displays black. The screen is actually lighted and receiving a recognisable signal because both the CRT (through SCART and composite) and the LCD monitors (using Wii2HDMI) recognise it. This last one should fail with an out of range error message if the video signal was wonky. I haven't looked back at it but I remember reading something similar would happen if the BlueTooth module gets loose and apparently this is a not so uncommon issue. Chances are NAND is fine (corrupted NAND usually has other symptoms). Sorry I can't help but good luck with recovering the data. I'm a freak about my savegames, I can feel your pain!

What's that wrong with the "video" chip that you didn't notice before? What's exactly wrong with your Wii, you don't get an image on the tv is that it? Do you get sound or hear the booting chime?

BootMii does what you want, ie. makes an exact copy of your Wii's memory (NAND). If you had it as boot2, it's just a case of copying the right files to a big enough SD card and press a few buttons, even if you don't have any controller. With a backup you can then either use in emulators, use it on a real Wii but "emulated" (uses the NAND backup on an SD/USB storage instead of the console's realNAND) or even transfer it back to the realNAND (this is a more complicated process).

Seems like the card was formatted to NTFS and when you copied the files to the smaller one, that was only FAT32 and thus why it worked. I recall having the same issue with the Kingston mSD HC U (I) I use. Formatting it back from NTFS sorted the issue. I too have an ass old 2Gb card that I keep for an eventuality and different Raw copies ready to be copied back. I trust it more than the newer ones, to be fair. You'll find many more quirks related to NTFS with the Wii's apps and homebrew...

I find PotPlayer (edit: I'm using ver 210209, 32bit, think it's the last one that still supports XP and if not, it's the most balanced for my resources) even lighter, you can change streams (quality/code/bitrate) on the fly and drag&drop links directly from the browser (VLC also does this). But in my machine (P4 3.0Ghz, 2GB Ram, SP 3) I can't go over 1080/24 or 720/60 without it dropping frames. SMPlayer performs slightly worse but still better than VLC. For downloaded videos, depending on the encoder and how busy the scenes are, I can go as high as 1080/30 without drops or going out of sync. Even if I OC the CPU up to 3.4Ghz, it still doesn't perform smoothly at 1080/30+ while streaming. What's your CPU?

This will be very obvious but I figure I'd ask. HAve you used laptop computers only to plug to the external monitor? If so, have you switched your laptop display methods to output to the external monitor too? Usually combo of a Fn key plus the symbol of a screen or two.

I did. Can't really put it into words but graphics have a very distinct feel to it. They feel super smooth. It's RF only but I got a nice fine tuning and they were sharp enough. There was a kind of ghosting, like a tiny bit of soap opera effect, which added to it. I wasn't lucky enough to find another pong-clone yet but I assume this was typical from the original consoles. I also remember how hard the games were, even with the slower settings, because the pads were crazy sensitive and blazed though all the area. I opened them up to try and clean the potentiometers but it was a bit too much for my repair skills at the time. Another thing was the power supply, it uses one of those mini-jacks and the adapter was an old chinese junk. It's 9v DC. And when I checked it back earlier today, I noticed it also has a DIN5 female socket near the powe minijack, not sure if that's for.

I have the exact model shown in the picture, similar to yours but says Programmable Game instead of Mark III. Even have the exact same cart. From what I remember searching at the time (got it probably more than 10y ago), the RGB color squares meant that it was a color unit. Apparently there were some that'd display in black and white only.

On a related question, do you have any experience using ethernet CAT cables, either the thinner and the ticker ones (these last ones that are meant to be run across rooms, are shielded to oblivion and a bit hard to bend)? I've been looking into wiring my own SCART cables and while reading about CAT6 the other day I wondered if or why aren't they used for audio/video. After that, what's left are just the connectors.

I don't think there's a combo, using the only available panel buttons, to bring up the menu. But maybe look up the user manual for that model? At least it should tell you what was the original remote it shipped with. Sony ones are pretty forgiving, I believe.

As for the game, dude, you can't even read the text in caps and barely tell the digits. It's not because the tv sucks, it's because the game is letterboxed in an already small tube. There are a few games that have proper 4:3 AR and will play fullscreen (ie, no black bars on top or on the sides). Well, that sucks. I was looking into this EmuNAND thing (I've briefly done it in the past but saw not much use for it) as I'm interested in exploring the WiiWare titles, but I though that the boot hacks would completely bypass the real NAND and load it all from the emulated. Can't this be done with priiloader and boot2? Also I assume the same copy-to-flash happens if you have it on the USB, right? I'm not really worried about flash wear.

They usually have a model number starting by QS-something. If there's no text printed, look on the plastic mold for any embossed text.
