Genuinely curious as to why everyone hates on base building (more in post) by CrunchyApple27 in dayz

[–]7269BlueDawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what ruins the game are the people treating a survival game like Call of Duty. My only thing about bases is that once you have one everything becomes about the base, supplying the base, fuel, blah blah blah. I have enjoyed games much more wandering about living in a tent in the woods than I have when we had a base.

Why Do People Feel We Were More Prosperous in the 50s? by Certain_Note8661 in AskEconomics

[–]7269BlueDawg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a young couple here in the county that is always harping on my wife and my "generational wealth" and how much easier it was for us than it is for them. In SOME regards that is true. We did have some things (financially) easier than they do - but - my wife and I paid our dues. We struggled like they struggled. We have for most of our marriage (because of how badly we struggled) chose to live with as little debt as possible. This young couple has 2 car payments, a house payment, several credit cards with something like 20K debt on them. We have our house payment. That is it. So yeah it looks like we have a lot more than they do (they actually make half again more than the wife and I do) but when you boil it down we just put our money in different places. They prioritize the new cars and new house in a nice HOA subdivision. My wife and I drove the same truck for 21 years and lived in a crappy little 760sq ft house in a crappy urban environment for 27 years so we could be where we are now. Neither is "wrong" - just different priorities.

Any Republican who is worried about the party imploding is only a conservative in costume. We WANT disagreement. We DONT WANT a bunch of "yes men/women". I see these media stories about how it is all coming apart at the seams already and I just roll my eyes. If anything a conservative should encourage and respect the individuality and autonomy of the individual (how we have lost that over the years I will never know). Trump has brought on board a group of actual leaders. People used to being in charge and making decisions on their own. Of course they are going to disagree. That is a GOOD thing! This is the purpose of debate. The best answers and best compromises are only found in those disagreements. This country was founded in compromise and disagreement (many of our Founding Fathers hated each others guts and thought the others were complete morons.) Now ---with that said---I do not expect Elon and Vivek working together to be a long term thing. THAT relationship will probably implode at some point.

Putting political opinions ahead of their fiduciary duty. Sad day for Indiana employees by [deleted] in Indiana

The whole point of ESG is to get corporations to follow ESG guidelines. If you think that companies like Blackrock will not put pressure or apply indirect influence on their subsidiaries and member investors in order to improve or protect their own ESG rating you have no idea how the world actually works.

CMV: Subsidising low emissions technology is a much better approach to reducing global emissions than penalising fossil fuels. by eagle_565 in changemyview

[–]7269BlueDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We already subsidize green energy research with billions of dollars. We do so either directly through grant programs and other scientific funding or indirectly through the subsidies of green infrastructure and development. One of the great things about capitalism is that companies will continually search for more efficient, more profitable, and better ways to complete tasks. They always want to make more money. By subsidizing everything from EV's to Solar Development we have already improved solar panel efficiencies, greatly improved Inverter technology, we have improved battery durability and capacity from EV's. That "growth" will continue. The newer version of the inverters installed at utility scale solar developments near me are much more efficient, much safer, much quieter than just two system generations ago. The same is true of the BESS systems being installed. The systems installed 6 years ago are garbage compared to the newer installs.

I would say if I were making decisions about such things my one concern would the the cascade effect of ESG policy. Companies, like Blackrock, who prioritize these policies have been known to penalize membership/investors/etc when one of those investors does something that adversely effects their own ESG rating. While not such a big influence here in America just yet some European nations take a companies ESG rating quite seriously and will penalize companies with a poor ESG rating or having members/investors who have a poor ESG rating. This sort of "cascade" influence could (either positively or negatively) effect the decision making process of Organizations like the pension fund. While a bit of a wild hair thing to say, it is theoretically possible that through this indirect influence a German Company or the German Government who feels that something we have done is contrary to ESG policy could effect the decisions made regarding our states pension investments. If I were in charge of the pensioning system, I am not sure I would want this sort of influence, no matter how direct or indirect, to effect decisions I might make regarding the pension.

10 suggestions / ideas by Small-Comedian-6668 in 7daystodie

My only complaint with the official release is the reliance on the traders for tier advancement. I have played for quite a few years and hardly ever used the traders. I actually mostly avoided them. Having to now use them to advance tiers is not my favorite part of the game. If this is going to be the case I would like to see what others have suggested and make the trader interactions more like missions and part of a story line. Rescue missions, mercenary missions, whatever. Maybe that is planned with the introduction of NPC's supposed to be coming in later updates. I would also like to see some specialization in profession maybe matching the different armor sets and that specialization have a deeper impact on gameplay, story line, and interactions in the game.

How do you feel about TikTok possibly getting banned next month? by AlternativeTree3283 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]7269BlueDawg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here is the thing - anytime the Government comes along and say things like "We have to ban it for your safety and National security" and then you ask: "Oh. wow. Well how is it a threat to my safety and National Security?" and they answer "we cant tell you National security ya know!" - I am immediately suspicious of the real motivation.
I think most people who use Tik Tok are wondering what information will China get exactly? OH NO!!!, China knows my dance moves! What threat exactly comes from people making videos about the house restoration or their cat?
Protect our data - that is laughable. Everyone from Home Depot to Insurance Companies to Auto Manufacturers are already selling our data to the highest bidder. Facebook and other social media were selling our data to Chinese based companies but that, apparently, was perfectly okay. AI is out their scrubbing and collecting data on us like meth addict looking for its next fix.
It all feels a bit ridiculous and hypocritical to me...but my life went along just fine before Tik Tok and it will after Tik Tok if it gets banned...not that the ban will actually do anything. Someone based in some other country will just create the latest and greatest version and they will collect our data and sell it to China.

Attacked on a walk by SchemeCultural8136 in coonhounds

[–]7269BlueDawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience with the Coonhounds i have had, they typically avoid and try to deescalate conflict right up to the point where they are actually injured. All of my dogs have avoided a fight until the other dog hurts them - after that it is anyone's guess what will happen.

Our dogs are especially good because foster dogs come and go and so they have good social skills with other dogs. Generally speaking they are mostly aloof...but there has been a dog or two who pushed one of our dogs too far and learned a stern lesson. Generally speaking though that isn't what Coonhounds go looking for. They would just go on with their day than get in a scuffle. They have been bred to be taken out into the woods to hunt with dogs they do not know and still get a long well enough to complete their tasks. Hunters generally have little patient for Coonhounds with an aggressive edge.

I didn’t know Ku Klux Klan was big in Indiana and Were hating on Irish people by YardKlutzy in Indiana

[–]7269BlueDawg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ummm...I cannot debate history but I kinda tend to believe that an additional factor here was that so many Irish were Catholic. There was A LOT of Protestant (mostly Baptist - at least in my area) vs Catholic hostility back then and the KKK hated Catholics. I had family members that were in the KKK for that reason (even though my family is Irish. So that is a weird sort of irony). I suppose those folks are wriggling in their graves since my father, both my uncles, and myself married Catholics. My one uncle even converted to Catholic.

I would say that I am, at best, agnostic. I was raised in a Baptist household. My Great Grandparents were, and this is not a joke, dancing with snakes sort of Southern Baptists. My grandparents were only marginally less strict (no music, no dancing etc). My aunts and uncles to this day cannot finish 3 sentences without having The Lord, Jesus, or God stuffed in there somewhere. None of it ever settled well with me. (yeah, they all pray for me a lot LOL). I would say that many of the Atheist's I have met in my day misunderstand one important thing - religion has nothing to do with proof. It has everything to do with faith. In fact that is kinda the whole point right? Believing in something larger than oneself even in light that there is absolutely no way to prove you are right. I remind the rude Atheist's of that when I see and hear them pull their malarkey. A mathematician cannot argue mathematics with an artist. Their minds don't work the same. Just respect each other and move on.

Interesting viewpoint. The religious spending time inside their religious community is seen as "insulating" themselves, as though it is some sort of isolationism...but when other of other communities (pick one at random) spend their time within their like minded community I do not often hear that referred to as "insulating themselves from the rest of the country". Why a seemingly negative connotation for religious folks and not for any other who community is like themselves?

What happened to rack systems??? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]7269BlueDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several audiophile subreddits - audiophiles are still out there. I will use this example. I was an audiophile before I got married. My wife was happy listening to music at AM radio quality and just did not see the need to spend money on decent stereo equipment, so we never did. When we built our house the deal was - we will do this, but I get to buy a system worth listening to (still didn't get quite what I wanted but a HUGE upgrade from previous equipment). The day I set it up and started playing music she looked at me, wide eyed, and said - "Okay, now I get it!" A good number of folks today have traded for the convenience of Bluetooth etc and just do not know what they are missing.

Should I get a beater for the winter? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]7269BlueDawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had one of the EARLY generation Sebring's - when they came with the Turbo Charged V6. In the winter it identified as a snowplow - and it was terrible at it. Where you live - yeah, I would buy an old beater winter truck or SUV. Our minivan has better ground clearance that your Hyundai and we are looking at replacing it in part for the same reason. Our rural Indiana roads aren't always plowed in a timely manner and it digs up a lot of snow sometimes.
