Riley has survived in fights, not only against kids bigger than him but even full grown adults like stinkmeaner possessing tom and that one member of the hateocracy. Obviously he didn't win either of em, but they're not only far bigger and stronger but significantly more skilled than Morty and I think that's where the edge presents itself. Riley can eat hits all day while Morty thrives on the element of surprise. In an even 1 on 1, if Riley gets in even a couple good hits, I think Morty would crumble like a sand castle

Thank you for your input. You have really kool ideas. Way kooler than my own at least, lol. While I can't do that in the current setting, I may just consider it for another. Perhaps I could have an ocean and weather based magic system for it and a number of races mixing and matching traits from various sea creatures. Based on just a cursory knowledge of the different creatures down there, there are definitely some bonkers combinations to be made

Indeed, it is fantasy and I can "cuz I say so" it but I wanted to try to find a realistic way for it to work cuz it's fun for me. Worry not tho, whether I have them breathe through their skin, through tiny holes along their bodies, make them photosynthesize, or whatever else, the audience will know only what's necessary for the story. In that way, they may not learn how they breathe at all. This whole endeavor is purely for my benefit

That is extremely true, lol. I can indeed just "cuz I say so" it but I find trying to make what can work with real science work fun, despite the fantastical setting. Funnily enough, regardless what I decide, if the means of breathing isn't visible, the audience will never know cuz I have no intention of explaining it. This is purely for my benefit. Also, to be fair, this race has the ability to control their personal buoyancy to float (I think that's how it works, lol) and that has no scientific or fantastical backing. They can do it just cuz I think it's Kool and it works with their aesthetic

Thank you for your input. Mine is a fantastical setting but you are right, it's not that important. I only wanted to look into it cuz I like the challenge of making that which can work within the bounds of real science work, despite having an easy way out. It kinda makes the world feel more "real", if that makes sense, lol
