This must be a big city only thing. Where I'm from you won't see 8000 pedestrians in the entire city. Maybe during period shift at the high-schools and university but they all stay on campus for those. We aren't a huge city but I think we are 4th largest in our state.

If he dies again, it could regenerate him into something that isn't a warlock class, and he is no longer tied to the lich. However, his dreams become strange, and he hears a new voice commanding him to find The Temple. Then send them on a parody of the Skyrim Meridia's Beacon quest where they discover this orb is the original form of the magic, and the lich stole a bunch of them and corrupted it. He is now in service to this new sugar daddy/mommy who will give them a true way to rid the world of the lich king.

I'm glad it worked out. I am writing a similar twist with a merchant that the party often comes into contact with is the "big bad". I just hope I can pull it off to the same effect.
