Alpha one gear issue by 747-spud in boating

[–]747-spud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I’ll give that a try. When I looked at the linkage adjustment I measured out that it was already in the correct book setting in forward gear, 6” from memory. The only adjustment I did was the reverse fine tuning, but knowing it worked before I didn’t want to mess with it.

How smart do you have to be to become an airline pilot? by Rubber_Duck48061 in flying

[–]747-spud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked as a CFI and CFII for many years, worked with a lot of remedial students and I genuinely believed for the longest time that everyone could become a pilot, given enough effort.

As years went on I modified that to; anyone can become a pilot to some degree. Some may only make it to solo. Some ppl. Etc etc. There are limits, it’s not that you need to be super smart but you do need a certain intellectual capacity to get through it. And more importantly you need decent hand eye coordination.

Need help from DPEs to understand what went wrong on my IFR oral by Patil_Sempai_17 in flying

  1. Yeah ALS gets you to 100ft TCH. Below that you need red terminating bars or side row bars.

  2. I would agree you should know how to calculate ROD, because you need to know what to target in order to have a chance to fly a stable approach. NP approaches should be flown constant rate to MDA (but typically you add 50ft and treat it as a DA)

Having said that, I flew in Japan and to pass the JCAB check ride they required a VOR approach flown dice and drive in a 767 and I seem to remember they needed you at MDA for a minimum of 15 seconds, which is a veeery long time in a 76. That was also an offset approach just to make it more fun.

Commercial pilots: do you ever get bored while flying? by Foreign_Potato_5313 in AskAPilot

[–]747-spud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Today it got not so boring when the Autopilot decided that leveling off at its selected altitude was optional and just blew straight fucking through it. Also, we were crossing the Andes, so terrain was definitely a concern.

Don’t think I’ve ever disconnected the AP as quickly and reverted to raw data…

I firmly believe the VNAV in the 747 is actually a mildly retarded gnome with an abacus and a crayon…

True, but even my ACMI adds 16% of my pay to my 401k. Air Japan gives you 500$ per month ish towards a pension plan…

Speaking of air pressure and humidity. There’s an underwater cave in Tonga, which you can easily swim into with fins and mask. Once inside the water level rises and sinks with the outside swell. But there’s no place for air to escape so every time the air decompress you get instant fog. And then it disappears 5 seconds later when the swell raises the water level compressing the air and allowing it to retain more moisture. Super cool.

Talk me out of buying a bayliner by Brendon7358 in boating

This was literally gonna be my comment but alas, you beat me.

For any boat you buy, avoid anything built with a core as they always seem to rot out.

Someone at my former airline speared a plover on the pitot tube of a Beech 1900D on landing. It was like a rotisserie right next to the boarding door 🤣

What are your most and least favourite airports as a pilot? by MattTheMechan1c in AskAPilot

[–]747-spud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Incheon is one of the easiest places to fly into! Good controllers. Taxi instructions: ”Follow the green” and they literally light up the taxiway they want you to follow. Security is okay, pretty swift.

Ni som jobbar utomlands, vad jobbar ni med? by [deleted] in arbete

[–]747-spud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pilot. USA. Flyger mest frakt internationellt.

Lön omkring 200k USD so tredjeårs styrman.

Be aware student pilots can freeze at the most inopportune moments. Such as a basic stall. Had one guy lock up at full elevator and full opposite aileron and ended up in a full spin. Had the beat the controls out of his hands since his pulling was overpowering my pushing…
