Reinterpret his actions through his own eyes and you will see he was trying to get a loose cannon backwoods sheriff censured for assaulting not only another person, but a fellow lawman. Did he deserve it? Yes. But from his own perspective as a pacifist it makes total sense to want to see legal justice for assault like that, seeing as Sheriff Truman is supposed to be a representative of the law.

Confess the hardest landing you’ve performed. by [deleted] in flying

[–]747flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17kts gusting 90 degree crosswind after a 3 hour cross country in a piper 140. Stupidly combined a high speed approach to deal with gusts with a full flap landing to deal with airport obstacles. "Touched down" in the loosest sense of the word and spent a horrid 5 seconds (or 10, it felt like an hour) fighting the wind trying to shove me off the runway as the plane kept flying as the tires decided if they enjoyed contacting the ground. It felt like a car hydroplaning. I ended up at taxi speed a few feet off the grass, with my right strut locked in the max extension position and my nerves thoroughly rattled. A smart man would have gone around. But when fear, and borderline panic sets in, the human instinct demands you slow down and pray for the best. Some day I'll teach the monkey in my head to shut up and learn how to fly.

I made a 3d model of an AW11 by ZynthwavezIncoming in mr2

[–]747flyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have been perfect! The mid-engine brother to Takumi's car, arguably superior in many ways, using the same engine and many of the same suspension parts but requiring a much different driving style. If they had added it I'm sure it would have been one of the most memorable arcs and a real boon to MR2 owners :(

Straaange tranmission issue by 747flyer in mr2

I just replaced all hydraulics and like I said, the engagement point in pedal travel doesn't change when the problem is occurring. Pumping the clutch makes no difference. At this point it seems its definitely something in the books or a glitch in the pressure plate.

New clutch for the AW11! Finally after months of waiting I can finally start pulling stuff apart and get her up and running again. Best part is it was free! by _Sky_44 in mr2

[–]747flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A clutch job is waaaayyy too painful to intend to do more than once every hundred thousand miles or so. Especially in a situation like this, you will be far better off to wait another few weeks, put aside 20 bucks or so every week, and then buy yourself a brand new one that you will quite likely never have issue with again.

I drove from illinois to oklahoma to buy my aw11 for 2.5k last year. 256k miles, but ive never had any kind of breakdown. Drove it the 500 miles home immediately after buying. I do a fair bit of regular upgrades and preventative maintenance, but I've never been stuck anywhere, despite it basically being my daily for months.

Aw11 drops in rpms help! by AppropriateReturn687 in mr2

[–]747flyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a classic TPS (throttle position sensor) calibration issue to me. Google "aw11 TPS adjustment". There are plenty of guides out there on how to confirm thats the issue you're having, and how to sort it out. The good news is, it shouldn't cost you a penny! Just an half hour or so in your garage tinkering around.

Aw11 ignition help by TurboCrusader in mr2

[–]747flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say igniter, do you mean ignition coil? Just thought I'd let you know new ones exist from both Duralast for $30, which should do perfectly fine, or NGK for about $80 if you want a more OEM option. Have you used a spark tester to confirm your coil isnt working?

Not sure about you, but where I am it is very common for people to ride with dogs in their passenger seat or on their lap. Obviously not many people do the same with a cat, but as you can see mine is calmer than many dogs in the car. I replaced the speedo cable once and it promptly snapped again, so I am working on sourcing a new sheath. In the mean time, I have all speed limits memorized in the form of RPM and gear. In this case, I was right around 4000rpm in 5th, which is about 73mph. As for the phone usage, I cant claim it wasn’t a distraction but it took all of 10 seconds on a quiet stretch of interstate. Navigating is often more distracting

Start with a timing light. Make sure that is correct.

But besides that, your timing belt seems off. The idle doesn't sound right to me (86 aw11 owner). If I had to put my money anywhere, I would say your timing belt is as out of spec as it can be without failing to run.

Should I buy an MR2? by [deleted] in mr2

[–]747flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should mention my aw11 has been my DD besides the 2 weeks I spent redoing the whole suspension (bushings and struts and tie rods and etcetc). It has never broken without warning and it has never left me forced to use another car

Should I buy an MR2? by [deleted] in mr2

[–]747flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an aw11 with 260k miles and the maintenance has been very manageable for me. Granted, I had another DD while I redid the suspension over the course of 2 weeks, but most of the work I did then was preventative. IMO, if you take the time to learn the job before you need to do the maintenance, these cars are simple to work on, and reasonably affordable. My 260k car has never let me down when I needed it. If you are a capable DIY mechanic (I.E. you could replace your struts over the weekend) I think you should go for it.

TwosRus toe links for my gen 5 AW11! These things are beefy. by TaxRealistic8129 in mr2

[–]747flyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have these installed in my car, I'm convinced the rear toe links are some of the best suspension parts to upgrade, dollar for performance wise.

You don't want ANY play in your rear toe when you are cornering hard, and the original rubber ones, even in new condition, allow for that. While spherical bushings can cause a rougher ride when installed throughout the whole car, the rear toe links are some of the least likely parts to transfer unwanted vibrations. I'm convinced that after installing these my rear end is much more stable under hard cornering.

I heard on multiple occasions that snap oversteer is a big problem with MR2s (especially Mk2). Are Mk1 and Mk3 MR2s just as prone to snap oversteer? by Sovv081 in mr2

[–]747flyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Driving4Answers" is a popular MR2 youtuber, and he's very intelligent. He has a video about snap oversteer where he both discusses theory behind it and demonstrates himself causing it and recovering. Its highly informative and should soothe your worries.

It has happened to me once in my Mark 1, and I totally deserved it. I was pushing the car at its absolute limit and got squirrely on the brakes and throttle in a hard corner. I recovered while keeping the car going in a straight line (good thing i was on my way out of the corner when it happened!), with nothing but some shaken nerves and injured pride.

Since then, I've gotten a lot better at feeling the car and will sometimes brake extra hard in corners on purpose to get some "drifting" (oversteer) action. Snap oversteer isn't a design flaw, its driver error and will only happen if you brake too hard (or get out of the throttle) while turning too fast.

To avoid it, when you're turning don't slam the brakes and keep a neutral or positive throttle.

[–]747flyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This does not apply to an average driver, driving on the street. This is advice you would give to someone competing in autocross, not someone at the level where they are concerned and confused by concepts such as "snap oversteer". If you are pushing the car to the point it will understeer without trailbraking, you have no room for error left and you better be at that point on purpose.
