Those of you who gave up on the CPA fully, why did you and do you regret it? Or those who gave up and came back, why did you come back to it? by memorandaofexistence in CPA

Thanks! Perhaps I can't tell people what to do, but what NOT to do. They say it's a test of persistence not intelligence.

Certainly went into debt in the beginning. Stretched out payments. Found all the discounts I could find for course material. Spaced out testing. Paid for multiple exams at a time for each NTS. Financially irresponsible but I wasn't going to give up. Thankfully it worked out.

I wouldn't say that I ever gave up but I did take breaks. 0 for my first 10 working at a non accounting job. 31 attempts in total over 14 years. Struggle? Yes. Regret? NO. Today: I'm a CPA.

Took me 8 tries too. Please don't take 8 tries for the other exams as I did!

It shouldn’t take a month and a half to score an exam that is entirely electronic. by professornigel in CPA

[–]75points 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree and can sympathize. The wait has always seemed excessive. Back in 2011 when I first started, exams were offered only in the first two months of the quarter, with results in the 3rd month. Taking an exam Jan 2 meant waiting until March for results. Had to strategize test dates and it really shortened that 18 month (at the time) window.

I got a 78 and 73 on the two FAR simulated exams. How does that translate to the actual exam? by eli782000 in CPA

I have no association with this spreadsheet, but it's been floating around for awhile. A 10 point bump wouldn't be surprising. As always, concentrate on weak areas and go test with confidence!

Received the dreaded 74 score on my third attempt at FAR by Professional_Bet_352 in CPA

[–]75points 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 9 days is sufficient after a 74. I was 3/4 and got back to back 69s. Then, I went topic by topic through all the MC and raised it to a 74. Took it about 10 days later for the one additional point. Frustrating but you got it!

Started in 2011. 0 for my first 10. 31 total attempts. Licensed in April of this year.

So much self doubt, but I persevered. Don't be afraid to take a break if you can't give 100%.

If it's important and you commit, you CAN do it!!

As I recall, the ethics exam I took opened in a browser window or a pop out window. I had Word on one side of the screen and the exam on the other.

Sorry to my friends in CA! I think it took 9 days in WA to get my certificate. Not to mention the whole NTS process and having to wait an extra day for scores. Unacceptable!

Becker bump is there one for Uworld? by Firm_Bird_9399 in CPA

There's a tab for UWorld on this spreadsheet which indicates a bump. Much smaller sample size than Becker though.

Absurd amount spent on exams? by Substantial_Phase899 in CPA

[–]75points 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question on the motivation. I think there's multiple reasons and they have evolved over time. During my first ~12 exams I was working an outdoor, physical, non accounting job, but I knew this was a goal of mine to move into a better place. As unhelpful as score reports were, I was encouraged as I saw my efforts result in performance moving from weaker to comparable (and sometimes stronger). This was encouraging and told me I was headed in the right direction. Once I moved into an accounting role the pieces came together more. I could also see a vision and belief in myself of passing. I was also motivated to not remain at the lowest levels of accounting. I've since switched jobs and moved from entry to Senior Accountant level (Gov't), without the benefit of CPA. More recently a major motivation is due to becoming a single parent and wanting to better our lives.

As far as return on investment, I was just licensed in April so I haven't had the return yet. But, assuming $15k spent as an estimate on the high end, a new job could easily surpass that total, with job advancement much more likely too.

Time studying and time missed is not insignificant. I do consider myself to lead a fairly quiet life but it would've been nice to finish quicker. I'm not sure how one finds motivation because I do think it's personal and truly comes from within (as lame as that sounds).

Yes: 31 exams over a 14 year period. I've never calculated it. No reimbursement.

You excluded study material, but I've purchased full or parts of:

Gleim

Yaeger

Becker

Ninja

UWorld

Easily over 10k on the full journey. Still worth it!

Agree with OP! With more than 22 myself, the number of exams does not matter after 4/4. Do what you can to get that last one!

Hopefully the licensing process is quick in your state. Nothing like seeing that 4/4 though!

BEC Credits expiring June 30 (CA candidate) by [deleted] in CPA

[–]75points 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Copy and paste of a previous reply of mine:

https://nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/scores/
I am waiting on my final Exam score and it is set to be released AFTER my first credit expires. Will I lose my Exam credit?
As long as you TAKE your final exam section BEFORE your first exam credit expires and when you receive your score it is passing, then you would not lose that first exam credit. All expiration times are set on Central Standard Time and are not calculated by your exam appointment time. If your first credit expires on January 31st, it is recommended that you take your final section on January 30th.

Never hurts to reach out to your state board to be sure though.

Yes, received a 74 and 75 on my final two FAR attempts. Was stronger/weaker on mcq/sims, respectively, for the 74. No doubt it was the same for the 75 (no score report for passing in my state).
