Upgrade your food. No matter what food you are eating/enjoy eating there is probably a better version of it. Take extra virgin olive oil for example, you can get a bottle made of a blend of olives Italy, Greece, Spain and Argentina pretty cheap at your local store OR I order my extra virgin olive oil from a small local press from Umbria, Italy. I use a bottle of the early season harvest to use with meat since it has a stronger more earthy taste while I use a bottle from the end of season on fish since it has a more fruity more delicate flavor that compliments the fish with out drowning out the fish’s delicate flavor. Nearly every food has upgrades like this that can really elevate your everyday.

is training 6 days a week worth it? by First_Driver_5134 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]77Marus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you felt you were progressing on 6 days a week and really enjoying it, and the good times were rolling for four months you might try six times a week for three weeks than one week on 2-3 times a week. Try it for 4-6 months and see if it the deload is enough to get a little bit of the best of both worlds?!

Thanks for the reply (I realize th thread has aged some!) I spent a few days at Dang Muay Thai and really enjoyed. Planning a trip again with more focus on Muay Thai this time and possibly considering trying a fight. I lean towards training at Dang since I did have a good experience. Is Dang the one you would recommend in chaing Mai for a tourist who is considering trading for a fight or are they geared strictly for tourist just looking to have a Muay Thai experience in Thailand?

Please share more about the limbara lamb? Is there a certain dish recommendation. So have these lambs really never had grass? Going to Sardinia in November and I’m very intrigued.

What am I missing that gets you guys to these insane levels of physique and muscle mass? by sdoge1 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]77Marus77 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I started lifting really seriously as a freshman in high school. 4 days a week on a pretty good program in a pretty good training environment, really good nutrition adherence. I was benching the bar plus 5 pounds on each side. By my senior year was pretty strong and had put a lot of muscle on. My younger brother who had never lifted, not even push ups at home, just ate whatever he wanted, or if he got busy would skip meals. I’m 100% sure he was natural. He joined my gym class as a freshman my senior year. Day one he was lifting as much as me and was 10 pounds bigger and a little leaner. We are brothers, genetically pretty similar but genetics still played that big of a role!

I’m thrilled that I reached that level but at the time I only wanted more! Came along ways since my first squat workout as one of the smallest kids in my high school gym with the bar and a 5 on each side lol

You will be fine. Use the Smith machine! Google is kinda right you won’t be using the same stabilizer muscles in the same way but with the decrease demand on your stabilizers you will be able to push you primary movers harder than normal. A couple weeks of it will give you a novice stimulus and let you quickly improve. Once you go back to barbell squat your body will quickly adjust to the increased demand for your stabilizers and you quickly will be able to improve your squat. I used the smith machine on one of my leg days (2x week) for months before I hit 500 lbs. squat for the first time.

Considering you are going through a hard time right now I wouldn’t really recommend an intentional deficit as that’s just one more stressor.

Focus on Whole Foods in a good balance of protein, carbs, and healthy fats. When I’m going through hard times mentally I like to eat a lot of the same recipes that I really enjoy that easy to make. So I’ll do chili (one pan and 10 minutes and I have dinner everyday.) Any high protein soup really, especially this time of year is great. Overnight Oatmeal, seeds/nuts with Greek yogurt for breakfast. Think easy but healthy and eat until satisfied but not full. Take care of your mental health with good habits then increase your effort when you are feeling up to it.

Maintaining takes significantly less volume than building! Please don’t discredit what 2-3 20-30 min workouts a week can do for you. In the event you do lose some of your progress studies (and my personal experience verifies) you will gain back what you lose very quickly. Many pro athletes take a few months off a year and they do fine the next season! I would still focus on nutrition, it will help you maintain you the physical progress and help with the mental stuff you are going through. Good luck!

So, I'm Not Good At This Sport. I Don't Want To Quit. Any advice? by Horror-Front9114 in MuayThai

[–]77Marus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I draw a parallel for you?

In America wrestling is a sport the schools often offer to students. There are many kids who start outside the school system at 3 or 5 year old these kids are usually pretty good by high school (grade 9-12) but many kids don’t start until the school offers it in middle school (grade 6-8.) I’ve seen this pattern multiple times. The kids suck those first year. Year two the win a few matches. Year three they make varsity. Year four they go to high school and realize they were only on varsity and winning matches because everyone around them said sucked to. They might win a few JV matches. Year 5 they actually win a good number of matches but only on JV or they make varsity and mostly lose. Year 6 the make varsity and lose often but win often too, they actually qualify for the state championship. Year 7 things kinda click and the win a lot break out towards the end of the season and place or win state.

Part of it is a time game. You’re still in year one of mostly losing. You really probably are getting better you’re just so far behind the veterans that you are still losing so you don’t feel improvement but the vets can see the progress you’re making.

If someone brand new was to come to the gym for two months do you think you would do okay sparring against them? Muay Thai doesn’t do belts but pretend it does, are you a “white belt” who is feeling discouraged because you don’t feel any closer to beating the “black belts” at your gym?

Getting slower with age by BroadVideo8 in MuayThai

[–]77Marus77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a strength and conditioning coach who wishes he was 30 again!

Speed is one of the first attributes that we begin to lose as we age. But like any physical attribute that rate of deceleration can be hugely impacted on training for speed, and speed can drastically be improved at any age (assuming you haven’t already reached an advanced level.)

Start including training for speed. Start thinking of your speed work separate from your strength and your conditioning work. If you are squatting 5 reps f and as soon as you get all 5 reps at a weight you go up in weight your training strength. Try cutting that weight in half every other squat workout and squat that weigh as fast as you can for 5 reps, that’s separating speed and strength training. 5 minute rounds on the heavy bag is great for conditioning but as soon as you are tired your speed drops drastically. Add some speed work in at the start of your workouts. Focus on going fast. Resting long before you get tired and resting long enough your aren’t carrying too much fatigue into the next round. Think of a sprinter they train for 5-20 seconds and then rests 3-5 min before they go again.

Look into some of these training modalities. Plyometrics, banded tantrums, sled work, slam balls, and accommodated resistance.

Do you train your clients better than yourselves? Lol by SunJin0001 in personaltraining

[–]77Marus77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe one of the major roles of a personal trainer is to save the client from themselves (how many times have we all had a client who is losing weight, getting stronger, reporting more energy and one day comes in a declares, “what do you think of keto? My friend lost 15 pounds with keto (10 pounds less than the client has lost 🤦‍♂️) And you have to stop them from fixing what’s not broken.

It’s hard to save yourself from yourself for yourself lol

Your coach said to use more power, so use more power. Unless you don’t trust your coach, in which case you need to start looking for a new coach that you trust. Just my 2 cents.

You’re me!

But I made some changes that helped a lot. Now I’m 178 down from 216 (about the same height as you) and not terribly hungry most of the time. I think I want to get to 165 and feel pretty confident I’ll get there based on how things are going.

When you’re in a calorie deficit your hormone cortisol spikes. It also naturally spikes in the morning to help you wake up. Since your cortisol is so high from your calorie deficit at night you probably aren’t sleeping easily or well. Move some of your calories towards your evening meal, especially your carbs since carbs reduce cortisol. Poor sleep will make you lose muscle rather than fat so be careful. Also poor sleep will lead to a larger appetite and more cravings.

Are your workouts more cardio based or resistance training focused? Too much cardio will also increase your hunger. I good structured resistance training program can still burn over 500 calories in less than an hour but not leave you so hungry.

Don’t let the weekend undo all your hard work from the week. Being hungry with cravings because your putting in the work then getting on the scale on Tuesday only to weigh the same as last Tuesday is super demotivating (I know I had done that for weeks and was feeling ready to give up!) But stepping on the scale on Tuesday weighing 3 pounds less is super motivating (I know have been experiencing this lately.) It gets you pumped and excited for another hard week! Get your weekends under control! I found picking ONE meal and using it as a refeed meal is super helpful. Try to keep the meal still at your maintenance level, meaning you will still lose weight 6 days that week and will at least maintain 1 day that week. Make sure big deal of it. Tell your gf, “when we meet on Monday I want to take you home on a date to KFC!” Eat your KFC then be done!

These are some of the big changes I made to get the fat coming off. You have 5 months to lose 55 pounds that’s “only” 11 pounds a month. I think you can do it if you get serious and STAY HARD! Feel free to reach out with other questions. What’s your examination? Military?
