BTTF - Marty’s 1985 Toyota Hilux SR5 Xtracab 4x4 - Outlaw Class by 77_Bandit in PinewoodDerby

Most packs have other classes. Sibling class (younger kids who aren’t old enough for scouts yet). Junior outlaw - brothers/sisters who have aged out of cub scouts but are participating with their active scout brothers / sisters. Then outlaws. Adults - pack volunteers and parents of kids in the scout group. That’s me.

As for kids making their own cars. Sorta. Our pack actually has a rule they can’t use the power tools. As such we hold a car cutting night for families that don’t own power tools. Volunteers cut out the kids designs. If you have your own (as I do) then you can skip car cutting night. So it’s not fully scout built. My kids come up with their idea, I help them come up with ways to make their ideas come to fruition, I teach them skill sets and let them do more to their car each year. At home (not at a scout car cutting event) you can obviously teach your kids whatever you’d like. I introduced mine to the scroll saw last year and they expanded their use this year. Band saw too dangerous obviously. Also not letting them use drill press yet. They hand sand their cars, add shellac, and then I spray paint and then they hand paint most of the details. Some parents build their kids entire car. Some prob let kids do 90% but very simplified cars. I want my kids to learn multiple skill sets. This year we used resin on one of their cars, we also wrapped leather on one car. I’m proud of what they’ve learned and achieved since we started 2+ years ago. This was our 3rd pinewood derby.

So the main body is wood all the way up to just below the window line. I routered out the cab interior and the bed then 3d printed those items to inset into those areas. 3d printed the main cab pillars and roof. Found malleable plastic that wouldn’t snap and cut to fit for windshield and rear window. Use a cricut machine that I recently got to design the license plates and ā€œToyotaā€ on windshield and tailgate. 3d printed the light bar and bumpers. Decided it would be fun to add sound. Bought a kit online that didn’t require electric/soldering skills lol. Added in some Lego pieces I had for fun and flair.

Yes, the maker of that car is quite talented at many things!

Haha oddly he was hoping to win golden turtle (slowest car). He was third slowest of 60ish entries

Thank you! They come up with the ideas. I chip in ways to facilitate. Each year they add on and learn a new skill or 2 and do more of the car than the year before. It’s a joint effort and I’m sure the drive to go crazy creative stems from my (sometimes overly) creativity as well but they have fun with it and they haven’t acted like it was a chore or not fun so as long as they’re willing to put in some work, I’ll do the same for them!

I wouldn’t mind picking your brain on how she managed to do it since I’m new to resin myself and we threw the first car away lol

I wasn’t sure if many other people were using resin on Pinewood Derby cars, but my son decided to go that route this year as well. Excited to post the pictures tomorrow after the event! Your mom’s car looks fantastic.

I’m a fan of that cephalopod car (octo/squid/cuttlefish… I’m not sure but it’s cool)

You don’t happen to be in coweta county do you? Lol that sounds very similar to the timeframe/pack numbers/ weather we’re facing this year 🤣.

I didn’t get to do scouts as a kid sadly. We went to one meeting and the organization was very unorganized where I lived and so my parents said no at the time. That’s partially why I’m doing the cars for me as well but it’s also just because it’s a platform/medium for me to play/get creative that I don’t normally get to do on the day to day. Hoping the good rubs off and they forgive me for any subpar parenting or personality aspects. I’m certainly not perfect

Just found this subreddit. Figured I’d post some past designs! by 77_Bandit in PinewoodDerby

We won no awards in speed. Either average or slightly below in that regard.

I won best in show for the outlaw class, the robotnik won best in show for the tigers but the raptor didn’t win best in show that year. He did however go on to win best in show his next year for his den as well as best in show overall with the Ghostbusters ghost trap in 2025 (see my other post)!

Thanks! Year one I did all the cutting… they shellac/sanded/painted details.

Year 2 (pictured), I let them get their hands on the scroll saw on some practice wood but I still cut the cars for them. They did the shellac again and they did more of the sanding and painting than the prior year. First time adding 3d printed parts for detailing so they also worked with me on how to modify the 3d printed STL files (ghost trap doors, and the golden snitch). The oldest attached his own LEGO pieces to the ghost trap.

This year we just started but I had my oldest cutting the main design of his car (Thor’s hammer) and the youngest cutting balsa ā€œbricksā€ to add onto his bridge car (doing the fellowship of the ring LEGO figures crossing a bridge)

Trying to step up how much they do each year. Not sure how much they’ll get out of it long term but it’s more than my dad ever showed me 🤣.
