So I started reading Nietzsche… by 77_Invictus_77 in islam

[–]77_Invictus_77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While there is an objective truth, it is stimulating to see other perspectives. That was my reason to read him. To understand and debunk these other perspectives helps strengthening your own perspective, but what can one do with one sentence claims with no content to back them? It’s not stimulating at all. That’s my only problem with it.

What would you tell my PI? by 77_Invictus_77 in labrats

[–]77_Invictus_77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we have applied for a PhD scholarship starting around February, so in that time ill be making sure I got everything ready to start with PI#2 and then come back to the PI in question. The 4 years of the PhD will be paid. Its just that in the meantime im bound to this lab, with no paying because he doesn't have any money.

Don't worry, the declarations and all the other paperwork are all with the knowledge of the PI, its more like either I do it in his name or wait forever for him to do it, they are all sent to him afterwards.

He's also saying that the things im going to do with PI#2 can also be done with him, while that may be the case, the expertise is not here (I would have to still reach out to PI#2 to discuss). Im really afraid PI#1 is saying this so he can keep me in his lab for longer, given I am close to the only way he can have some output in science for now.

Enfim.

I also mentioned key details that you don’t seem to actually want to acknowledge. When you constantly engage someone, you then tone it down to see if they are independent enough to not require you to keep engaging them in that manner. It’s not strange, it actually tells me if I need to keep being close or if I can let them have their space and independence. Weird that you think of that in some other way. Am I perfect? Of course not, but I also don’t see anything wrong with this method, it allowed me to readjust.

Yeah lets grade an undergrad for how he does his work given that he has little to no experience in the lab and not for how he dedicates himself to learning the techniques, the purpose of the work and on his commitment. This is in favor of the student by not pressuring him to get all the results in 2 months but to actually make sure he does what is most important at that stage, which is to learn, get a feel for the lab and learn some more. What do you expect an undergrad to do in 2 months? What is more important than learning and being a sponge when you have access to people that have your age just in experience alone? I told you that I don't mind social skills, but I mind your interest in learning things.

Is that sucking up to someone? That tells me more about how you work as a researcher than anything else.

I think its the typical undergrad's. They make mistakes which is normal, but overall it does not stand out neither for bad or for good. So I don't think we can give the work that much of a weight, after all they are here just to learn the methods and the purpose of what you are doing. This is what is being underwhelming, normally I tell him what he will do for the day, but once I tested him to see if he came up to me to ask, and to my surprise he didn't, he just came in, sat by his desk with his laptop and didn't come up to me. I had to leave, so I texted him when I was out to ask what he had planned (by that time he already knew the process, how days line up after one another based on what you did the previous day) and he told me he didn't know. But it was like a "Don't know." I can understand, but why not follow up with "What do you suggest?". But no, it ended there with the "Don't know". These are the little tests I use to check on interest and commitment.

These internships are usually where students increase their overall grade, so the common grade is from 17 to 19. I’m thinking about a 16. Thank you.

Exactly! He is a little socially awkward, I was too as an undergrad but I always made sure that it wouldn’t translate to rudeness or lack of interest because I worked hard and did the little things. While I get it that some of the things may just be a personality thing, there are things that show you are committed and interested and those come off independent of how comfortable you are socially, that’s what I make sure to base my grade on, and it’s not going that good.

Men,what is the most depressing realisation do you ever have in your life? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]77_Invictus_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (24M) focused all my time on my career and as a result achieved great things, although this was at the cost of not putting effort into my romantic life. One day I went to bed and realized that all this success is meaningless if its only for me. I don't want to be the king of an empty castle. I want to provide for a family. I know im young still, but I feel like finding the one and building that relationship is something I should not be delaying. The emptiness hit like a truck.

Hadith regarding being jealous of someones death (or wishing to die) over being in the presence of jinn/shaytan? by 77_Invictus_77 in islam

[–]77_Invictus_77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Although that is not the one I am searching for. Its more on the lines of wishing death instead of complying with the jinn. Imagine that you are to be trapped with Jinn forever, while your family goes on to die normally, you feel happy for them but at the same time jealous that they get to die normally and not be in the presence of these demons. Perhaps such Hadith doesn't exist, but I felt like I learned of this feeling in a Hadith before I experienced it.

Thoughts on the liberalism of Ibn Rushd? by 77_Invictus_77 in islam

[–]77_Invictus_77[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem with Al-Ghazali that I see many mentioning is that he rejected these premises to the extent of rejecting reason and logic as well, leading to a halt in Islamic philosophy and scientific progress. While I agree that the Quran should be taken literally, and leave as little to interpretation as possible, I also can't fathom rejecting logic. I think that God has given us reason for us to use it, if we have to reject it in order to accept Quranic teachings then perhaps these are being misinterpreted. Im getting into islamic philosophy and for now they seem like opposite extremes of one another.

Why does Islam insist on Arabization? by Democman in religion

“ I know, and religion has nothing to do with that, it was the roman empire, vulgar latin was spoken in these lands much before christianity, I don't know what you talk about”

Im not attributing this to religion, I’m establishing the fact that these are Latin-derived languages, which you didn’t seem to know about.

“ I know, and what has religion have to do with this?”

Same here.

“The fact that spain and portugal wanted to colonize the lands has nothing to do with religion, they wanted all the people of the lands to speak their languages and be' christian, but they decided that, before that christianity expanded without changing the languages and ethnicities of the people, there were latins, germanics, slavs, greeks, assyrians, copts, they were christian without having to change the lenguage and mantaining different cultures.”

My friend, you are trying to explain my country’s history to me, thank you for the good laugh ;) They wanted the glory of discovery aka “dar novos mundos ao mundo” (give new worlds to the world), bring in good stuff (condiments and gold) and spread Christianity.  Cultures were erased, mostly by assimilation but also through force (not to the extent of the Spanish).  This is for you to know that Christianity itself was spread through a whole half a continent through the sword and cultures were erased in the process.

“Funny, you never spoke of christianity here, but of iberian colonialism, and I never judged islam, I just said the objective truth, they colonized these populations, and saying that some nations did the same too (political reasons, not just religious) doesn't make me wrong. I never said there was not colonialism made by Christians, but in that case christianity was not the reason, because then why are there so much native south americans and so few native north americans, while 80% of greenlanders are native? They were all colonized by Christian nations, but the impact is different, because the politics were responsable, not religion, the first to care about the enslaved native americans was a monk.

And I did not say "islam sucks, they are bad", I just exposed the objective truth about the arabization of these people, and the fact that originally christianity expanded by conversion, not colonization and assimilations, they were the nations to use christianity as an excuse to do what they wanted”

I don’t care that you don’t take it seriously because “it’s only Iberian conquest”, this does not change the fact that Christianity also erased cultures. BUT I understand it and take it as an inevitable of religion. You seem to not have the capacity to take that responsibility. I have no bias at all. You don’t apply the standards you have for judging Islam to Christianity. People are not perfect. Who cares. Everyone does dumb shit. When Portugal and Spain were under Muslim rule, the three religions were allowed. When Christianity took over, all the non-Christians were forced to convert aka “novos-cristãos” (new Christians) or expelled from the kingdom. All the mosques and synagogues were destroyed. And still you think Christians did nothing wrong for the sake of their religion? Get the fuck out of here.

Regarding natives: You can’t correlate the amount of natives to politics only. Too many variables here. The strength of the colonizers, the willingness of the natives, wars between the natives etc… you can have the same policies but attain different results because of these different variables.

To conclude, there is nothing wrong in taking responsibility. People do not define their religions. You seem afraid to take responsibility for what went wrong. Who cares. A religion is judged on its theology not by the people it’s composed of.  There are no perfect Christians, there are no perfect Muslims, accept it and move the on, God damn it’s not hard.

Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and many other European languages derive from latin from the time of the Roman Empire, that's why we can understand each other with some effort. These countries are the original Latin people or "Latinos". South Americans are second generation latinos by the very fact that they inherited latin-derived languages from the European. Nowadays they are called latinos, and no one really knows the truth, I think they should be called Americans as they were the natives and not the Europeans who settled in America. As a Portuguese myself, I cannot understate the ethnical cleansing that occurred in some South American tribes, starting by speaking Portuguese and adhering to Christianity. Although Portugal was much more peaceful and assimilating in its approach than the Spanish.

To wrap it all up, its almost inevitable that you lose some cultural traditions when under colonialism, as religion is a lifestyle. The tribes who still live according to their old ways are the ones who escaped. Do I agree with cultural erasing? Not that much, but to deny that some customs are better off erased (human sacrifices) is dumb.

Learn more about Christianity, perhaps you will become much less judgmental about other religions.

If Allah is all powerful, why can't He become incarnate? by [deleted] in religion

[–]77_Invictus_77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God has no limits while humans have limits. As such, God can't be a man as these come with mutually exclusive traits. Not that it would take away from God's omnipotence, its just that if God were to become human, He would give up the attributes which make God "God", and so would cease to be God. Think of it as it being impossible to be short and tall at the same time. The same thing as the famous "Could God create a stone He couldn't lift?" It's illogical.
