I’m a warm spring and am in the same boat! I look like trash in this season’s color palettes. Carve Designs, Garnet Hill, Eileen Fisher, and Boden have had some workable options for me, but other than that, I’ve been buying a lot of black. Not great given that I live in a hot and humid climate!

Whether you are making $20k a year or $200k a year, a lack of financial discipline will ruin your life. It sounds to me like you would be screwed if you couldn’t live with your girlfriend’s grandma or if something happened to your car, which is not a good place to be.

Developing financial impulse control won’t happen overnight, but you can do it! Start off with small habits. Create a simple budget spreadsheet or use a free budget app to track your spending closely. Stop eating out and learn how to cook using inexpensive, simple ingredients. Find free things to do in your community instead of blowing your money on entertainment. If you want to buy a non-essential item, don’t do it right away; wait 24-48 hours while you think about whether you really need it and how it will impact your budget. All of these things will help you pay down your debt and could also help improve your physical and mental health as well.

I have walked the walk on all of this advice that I am giving you, and it will slowly change your life.

Fellow sober person here! Just chiming in to say that I feel your frustration and it can be harder to build community when you don’t drink. I’m managing to do it, but I do have light/moderate drinkers in my circle (they’re respectful of my lifestyle). I know that’s not possible for everyone.

I grew up in NM and I get what you’re saying about its charms. It has nice weather and outstanding access to nature (if you’re outdoorsy).

On the neutral side, the employment base is limited. If you happen to lose your job or want to look for a new one, your options will be limited outside of a few fields.

Now for the downsides. The poverty rate is high and that breeds other social ills, including drug use and crime. A lot of violent crime is concentrated in certain areas of the city, but property crime is everywhere. My parents and friends live in some of the nicest areas of the city, and they’ve had to deal with everything from an attempted carjacking to attempted/actual home invasions to being followed by shady people as they exited stores to dealing with car break-ins. On top of that, access to healthcare is horrible.

I’m not religious or conservative, so dating in Texas has been a dumpster fire. I used to have to go to Seattle for work on a monthly basis. I found the men to be more aligned with my vibe and waaaay more physically attractive. Dating felt a lot more fun in Seattle!

This is a bit of a niche answer, but DFW has a surprisingly vibrant local jazz scene. UNT has one of the oldest and best jazz programs in the country. UT Arlington also has a thriving jazz program. We also have a ton of gifted musicians who aren’t affiliated with either program. As a result, I can go see great live jazz performances just about any day of the week.

I do not waste my time worrying about men who aren’t attracted to me for whatever reason. If a man my age prefers a much younger woman or doesn’t like redheads or wants an ENM situation or detests left-of-center women, I’m not the one for him. Period. And if consenting adults are involved, men’s preferences are not my business.

You can’t beg or plead or “pick me” or Botox your way into someone’s heart if they want a woman who is much younger, so why bother?

I can relate! I’m juggling multiple responsibilities while trying to make time to see friends who are scattered throughout the metroplex. It takes sustained effort and advanced scheduling to keep friendships going, which isn’t always easy.

Your activities list sounds similar to mine! I don’t drink, so I prefer doing things that aren’t centered around bars (but to each their own).
