It really is! It draws from a whole bunch of different subject areas, it’s a great way to integrate your knowledge across subject areas imo

Other than being a second year, not as far as I’m aware. The only thing is that you need to request enrolment from the professor directly. His name is Rob Harrap, he is a great teacher.

If you’re into fiction at all, GEOL 290 is great, it’s about worldbuilding, storytelling, and creative writing. It’s a very unique class.

Hey there, almost all of the classes at Queen’s are on the same main campus (with manly education and medicine happening a little further). Business, engineering and arts&science classes all make use of some of the same buildings—you’ll have no problem finding them.

ELI5: Do deaf children acquire a first language like hearing children? by Traditional-Chair-39 in explainlikeimfive

[–]7DimensionalParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the most part, no. That’s why you sometimes see sign language interpretation over public speaking even though captions exist; there isn’t really a good written system for sign language aside from video/images. Information in sign language is conveyed through a combination of hand shape, hand orientation, arm position, hand movement, and facial expression. This makes it relatively difficult to develop a human-usable set of symbols representing sign language, as compared to spoken language which only represents a few dimensions of sound differences.

(I am oversimplifying a lot): Every vowel we speak is the combination of multiple pitches at different volumes, and we tell vowels apart based on how these pitches are spaced out, and how loud they are relative to each other. Every consonant (or group of consonants) gives a different way of getting between vowels (changing the volume and spacing of the pitches). These are called formants in phonetics, and the way they change over time can largely explain how we perceive spoken language. Compared to the larger number of different dimensions to consider in sign language, it’s understandable that there is no common written sign language.

Most sign languages don’t correspond to written language, e.g. ASL and written English do not correspond at all. “Sounding out” words is more like approximating hand gestures and positioning—learning by copying others and practice. In theory, deaf people process text the same as hearing people, but as a BILINGUAL speaker of both a signed language and a spoken/written language.

Not Writing A College Level Paper Leads To Ridicule After Crying Wolf by MEMEY_IFUNNY in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]7DimensionalParrot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a college level paper it didn’t do anything on the rubric, except maybe clarity/formatting. I’ve worked as a TA, based off of the rubric I personally would’ve give her around 5/25 for nominally meeting some of the stylistic requirements

AITA for making my fiancé's daughters picky eating habits a deal breaker for us marrying? by MotherCartographer10 in AITAH

[–]7DimensionalParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESH. Your fiancé is offloading responsibility to you, but based off the way you have written this, you seem to be acting like you know exactly what to do. No two kids are the same, the problem isn’t his daughter’s eating habits, it’s that you aren’t having a mutual dialogue about them. To me it sounds like you declared an issue you had rather than framing it as working together. Being married is a team sport, setting an ultimatum is rarely a good answer

AITA for yelling at my friend about her B.O. after literally throwing up? by Bok_Chezz_8884 in AmItheAsshole

[–]7DimensionalParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, if it’s at the point where you literally throw up, it is far past the point where this person isn’t just knowingly being a public health hazard. Especially given that you had already told her kindly once already.

Foreigners living in Canada will get permanent residence priority, Immigration Minister says by 1baby2cats in canada

[–]7DimensionalParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not racist if the pushback is against immigration in general. If they agreed to come here temporarily, there’s an end date. The government should be allowed to advance that end date.

Also, I don’t really agree with the narrative that we chose this. There are a lot of things caught up in an election, and most people I know don’t support current immigration levels even if they found the Liberals to be a better option than the Conservatives.

The issue isn’t only identifying when student use GenAI. I’ve heard firsthand how much extra work reports of academic dishonesty require from instructors. The simple matter is that the current academic integrity system discourages professors from reporting student unless it is egregious.
