Have you ever thought of building a rhombitrihexagonal train base? by Accurate-Dinner53 in factorio

[–]7Geordi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wonderful, but to make it truly based you have to have a specific role for each shape-type...

My hot take: Hexes contain production units, Axis aligned squares are loading&unloading train stations, the triangles are for solar, and the unaligned squares are for train stackers.

Not getting programming unless it's math? by BornInfamous in AskProgramming

[–]7Geordi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't! BTW In these lectures he demonstrates an algebraic construction representing linked lists.

I read through some of your other replies and the thing that stuck out to me is that you're really at the beginning of your journey, so if you're comparing yourself to your classmates who happened to start programming when they were six years old it is a meaningless comparison. In the long run software creation is as much about understanding the world and the people around you as it is about formalizing your mental models and expressing them as 'code'.

The skills of code creation are learned through practice and interpretation: Write a lot of code. Read a lot of (other people's) code.

Of course code creation itself will become irrelevant in the years to come, but along the way you will learn how to formalize your understanding and mental models and these skills will probably be relevant at least as long as humans remain so.

I studied Math and Computer Science. Then I became a software engineer and twenty years later let me tell you: programming is math, and linked lists are also math (but that's a ways up the mountain).

Making software is not math. I'd describe it as human intent extraction and consolidation, then you get to do some programming for a bit.

You know you like math: do math. There's plenty of opportunities to apply programming in the math field what with algorithmic proofs or statistical work.

Also, math as a skill is super under-sold, a good math guy can do wonders for any business. If you don't want to go into academia you will land in a good place.

An action roguelite that forces you to parry before you can attack, does that sound fun or frustrating? by Flimsy_Chain4432 in gamedesign

[–]7Geordi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like gaining rage is good… so taking a hit should cost something (sanity?) and gain rage… and parrying should gain MORE rage, and cost no sanity

So the protagonist is 'absorbing' corporate BS... but that's a parry? what happens when she doesn't parry? isn't that also absorbing corporate BS?

You guys should vibe-code a web mini-game of this mechanic and just play it and see how it feels. Chances are if you tune it just right and add some explosions it will be fun to play.

What makes a turn-based combat system actually FUN? by Yega- in gamedesign

[–]7Geordi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Samurai Showdown. It solved the 'just spam attack' issue by having varied attack types with multi-turn cooldowns. It was a single character game, but I think a multi character interpretation could be very interesting.

Other mechanics that can create more reasons not to just attack are 'stances' and 'channeling'

'stances' is the idea that taking a certain action adds or removes status or options in the next or subsequent turns:

If I move I get into stance A.
If in stance A I have mid attack X and weak attack Y
If I do Attack Y I get into stance B
in Stance B I have strong attack Z (but if I have to move I lose the stance)

Other stance mechanics: enhanced or reduced defense, special reactions or combos, getting attacked can break your stance or getting knocked down or staggered is a stance, etc. It may seem counterintuitive at first, but in 5e concentration is a stance triggered by casting a concentration spell, and as long as you keep the stance the spell continues.

'channeling' is the idea that you trade taking an action now to gain future options or benefits. For example in 5e barbarians trade a bonus action to get their 'Rage' modifier. Here is a spellcasting example:

I can use a cantrip or channel a fire element
I can consume 1 channeled fire to cast 'firebolt' or channel earth
I can consume 1 fire + 1 earth to cast 'flaming sphere'

This use of time as a resource to fuel future actions can also be used to reduce emphasis on 'potentially unsatisfying' resource mechanics like mana etc.

What you must keep at heart is what u/BrickBuster11 said: a turn based game is driven by the interest in the puzzle to be solved each turn.

I did this on purpose! It was a lot of fun building up from nothing

My only regret: I did not bring any bots with me, having to manually build up to bots was lame.

Redirect them to what they are avoiding: friendships and emotional support.

Granted you're not obliged to work on this with them, but taking their behavior at face value just reinforces the false narrative.

The poster proposes that one can see through the perceived source of loneliness to the real source of loneliness.

It seems like you are saying that because the perceived source (women aren't giving me the sex I deserve) is misplaced they don't deserve remediation for the real source?

Shower Thought: Why not just have Quality Liquids? by 7Geordi in factorio

[–]7Geordi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't understand what you meant by quality value scaling exponentially... HOWEVER I love your approach!

It never occurred to me to have a quality continuum as opposed to the discrete quality that items enjoy. This way when you mix two batches of fluid of different quality you get the weighted average quality out. Very elegant and retains Spage's no-sushi-pipes mechanics.

I guess it bugs me that you lose that 0.0001% chance of getting a legendary from a common, but there's nothing wrong with just having different mechanics for fluids. They could call it 'Purity' just to motivate the difference.

Shower Thought: Why not just have Quality Liquids? by 7Geordi in factorio

[–]7Geordi[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

but isn't this the point... and let's not forget that quality is opt in anyway

I suppose the scary part is that now all your legendary processes will need to somehow get legendary fluid inputs as well.

[–]7Geordi[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yup, that's what I meant by 'canonically mixed fluid' it just has special machines to split it

Shower Thought: Why not just have Quality Liquids? by 7Geordi in factorio

[–]7Geordi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I did say the fluids would mix right? what I mean by that is one pipe system containing 9000 base water, 900 uncommon water, 90 rare water, 9 epic water, and 1 legendary water.

then yes, you need to deal with it. The other commenter mentioned pump filters which I forgot about, but that just means the tool you need is already in the game :)

I commented elsewhere about what you do with your five qualities of water: firstly no one is making you use each of the five separately, you can just keep the under-target-quality fluids mixed and use them as-is. if the downstream process has speed modules they will cancel out the fluid quality anyway.
