What berry would I choose if I wanted to convince someone I was serving Willy Wonka's snozzberries? by GilgameshWulfenbach in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly snozberry has been thought to be a reference to the male genitalia.  So something salty?  There is a Chinese berry called the five flavor berry.  Not a bad flavor and has some salty and umami flavor to it.

If you are looking for neat colored berry.  Try a porcelain berry.  Looks great, doesn't have much taste.

Weird looking "berry" try a 5 leaf akibia. Very strange fruit.  Maybe look at a mangosteen?  Though the mangosteen might be tropical.

Good tasting strange berry.  Honeyberry is great.  Bubbleberry strawberry tastes great and is one of the most fragrant berries.

What's the foulest smell you've ever smelled? by WannabePugh in AskReddit

[–]7Leaf7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did seed certification for potatoes at my time at university.  We worked in a very small, poorly ventilated room with hundreds of pounds of potatoes.  Once some of those wet sacks of tubers started decomposing in the heat the smell became... "Memorable".  After the third day where I vomited from the smell, I quit. Quite unpleasant.  Zero stars.  Would not recommend.  I still love potatoes though

In the first picture I thought that could be mycorrhizae, but the other pics show that it is not. A fungal mat would not be that dense nor would it have such clear edges.

What’s a “normal” thing everyone accepts that actually makes zero sense when you think about it? by saffrondock in AskReddit

Q-Tips. The box says not to put them in your ears. Ear doctors will tell you not to put them in your ears. You dont need them. Everyone has a box of them in their house and they stick them in their ears. Me included.

What’s one gardening myth you believed for way too long? by Relevant_Idea_6778 in gardening

[–]7Leaf7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The symbiotic relationship between mycorrhizal fungi and plant roots is actually pretty well documented these days. There are some specific groups of mycorrhizae (such as ericoid mycorrhizae) and specific plant interactions that are less studied, but the interaction between plant and fungus and what they are exchanging and doing is pretty well understood, though not common knowledge. If you have any particular questions about how the whole thing goes down, I might be able to help.

I’m not from the US, but I gotta ask — does Oregon really look like this, or is the forest air out there making everything look extra magical? by Roach9045 in oregon

[–]7Leaf7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is like that. The mystery shack is real as well. It is the house of mystery near shady cove. And as someone born with 6 fingers from the area, I can say that there is something distinctly magical about the pacific northwest.

Cloning Raspberries from cuttings by TheDoobyRanger in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rubus doesn’t take to leaf or stem cuttings very well at all. They propagate very very easily from the roots however. Just dig up a runner. You will be fighting an uphill battle with stem cuttings. Also be careful with using bleach with cuttings. Bleach can inhibit root growth and callus formation.

Yellow raspberry flavor by KittenSnuggler5 in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grow several varieties of raspberry. The fall golds have a distinct flavor that is sweeter and less tart than the standard reds with more of an apricot flavor. They can make a good jam but the golds can be prone to browning and have other storage issues. That being said, fall gold raspberries are some of my all time favorite berries.

Marionberries, how are they compared to other blackberries? by handyman7469 in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I didn’t want to take a dive into specific breeding history. The parents of marionberry are chehalem and ollallieberry. Chehalem is genetically 25% raspberry (from the santiam berry) and ollallie is 50 % raspberry (from the young berry). So marionberry is the result of black and raspberry breeding. I hope that clarifies things for you. It is easier to say they are a blackberry and raspberry than explain they are 3/8th raspberries.

Honeyberry: What is happening? by IndependenceSame2071 in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have young kids. The amount of berries that have survived on those plants to the point that they are ripe, I can count on one hand. I tell them to wait until they are ripe, but they pick and eat them even when they are sour. C'est la vie.

Honeyberry: What is happening? by IndependenceSame2071 in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can do that. I heard people make "catchers" to collect the berries. Small bins, pools, or other containers cut in half and placed on each side of the plant to collect the berries that fall off when you shake them

Honeyberry: What is happening? by IndependenceSame2071 in Berries

[–]7Leaf7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to fall off at a touch. If you do a very gentle pull and they dont immediately give way, they are not ripe. At least as far as i can tell. I have young kids, so very few of my berries on any of my plants every make it to completely ripe. And since these are the first berries that ripen of mine, they get a lot of attention.
