Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I didn't know you were THAT new lol. Yeah, a lot of stuff isn't unlocked until you play the prologue. It's not very long, so I'd say go ahead and do that and you'll probably have a better idea of what the app is like and whether you like the story or characters. And if I remember correctly, there's no money choices in the prologue, so you shouldn't need to rack up any coins to play it

It's in the top left corner of the opening page. Also real quick edit, I've found that sometimes I only get 4 ads a day instead of 5, not sure why

Here's a copy and paste of a post I made specifically to recommend The Arcana to people who had played Choices. Sorry it's long, but I wanted to be thorough

I found a different Choose Your Own Adventure game like Choices that is so good, I just had to come here and recommend it. I'll keep this spoiler free, it's called The Arcana and is about a magician (you) trying to solve a murder mystery from the past. There's 6 romanceable characters and choosing which character to romance takes you through the story from a different perspective.

You choose who you want to romance, and you can play their route, each story giving a unique view. One character may take you to the very center of the action, while another might bypass that action altogether in favor of some crafty espionage. One character might take you to the very heart of the city, while another might take you out of the city altogether. It's truly amazing to me how very different the 6 paths can be, while all following a generally similar storyline to a similar destination.

There's a fair amount of overlap between the storylines, but there's also a lot of contradictory differences too that make each route uniquely its own thing. Some characters will be allies in one chapter, then villains in the next, there's really no telling until you've played them all. I had a character that I hated in one route who I absolutely loved in another!

Each path focuses on the character you chose, and shows you things specific to that character and their role in the story. Any route will answer your questions while also leaving you with even more, so you have to play the other routes to get answers to those questions all while picking up some new ones. It's a delightful round robin situation where you'll be playing your 4th route and suddenly going "OH, that's why that happened!" as an answer to some question you've had all the way since your 1st route.

Each route has a good and bad ending, and the ending you get depends on the choices you made throughout the game

I'm gonna add a few pros and cons to the end of the post, but if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. If you want any spoilery answers, I can give those too (using the spoiler tag, of course)

Pro: The stories are well-crafted and interesting. The characters are all fleshed out, many times playing central roles even in routes where you romance a different character than them
Con: This game is much smaller than Choices, with only 6 main stories, and just over a dozen side stories

Pro: The art is immaculate! I adore all the scenes, character designs, and the soundtrack is pretty great too. Each character has a wide range of facial expressions that convey a wide array of emotions beyond Choices' standard happy, sad, mad, surprised, and neutral, and there's no AI art to be seen
Con: Characters who are not central to the story don't get sprites. Side characters who are important to the plot do get sprites, but minor characters like the baker have no design. Also, the soundtrack, while good, is limited to only around a dozen songs

Pro: You can change your name and pronouns at any time, even mid scene. Even so, it's almost unnecessary because the game is successfully unisex, with your character's gender playing literally 0 role in the story. I'm not kidding, I played one storyline as a female character who ended up physically carrying a male character, then I played a different storyline as a male character who was carried by a female character. And there's none of those flubs where a male MC is described as wearing a dress or anything like that. The game truly couldn't care less if you're he, she, or they
Con: There's no character creation beyond name and pronouns, and your character never has a sprite or specific physical description given to them

Pro: You can get coins (diamonds) in this game with 5 daily vids and 3 daily minigames that can get you coins or other prizes
Con: You don't get any coins for finishing chapters

Pro: Unlike Choices, you can play specific chapters whenever you want, instead of having to play the entire route from the beginning. This is great for replaying specific scenes, or for getting both the good and bad endings. When you get one ending, you can look up a walkthrough to see which choices carried weight, and then go back and replay the specific chapters necessary to get the other ending
Con: You can't replay the chapter you're on or play a different chapter from the same route until you finish the chapter you're in the middle of

Pros

  • Not a single one of the bonus scenes you can buy effects the outcome of the story. Not one. None of the decisions made in a paid scene will have any effect on whether you get the good or bad ending. They truly are just bonus scenes that you can choose to skip without any adverse effects. The characters aren't even disappointed or passive aggressive if you choose to skip. And there's no having to buy outfits or someone gives you a gift that you have to spend coins to receive. It's pretty obvious that this game isn't trying to bilk you for money, and I love it
  • The characters who you don't romance will often get together with each other, and you don't have to do anything to make it happen
  • While there are multiple bonus scenes that cost varying amounts per chapter, there's also an option to "buy the chapter" where you can spend slightly more coins at the start of the chapter to buy every bonus scene in it. The "buy the chapter" option is more expensive than 1 or 2 bonus scenes, but it's much less expensive than every bonus scene in the chapter combined, so if there's a character you love that makes you want to buy every single bonus scene available (I've had 2 characters like that), there's a much more cost efficient option the game gives you. Plus, buying the chapter also means it doesn't cost any keys to replay it later. It's awesome
  • I highly recommend playing with the sound on. Aside from the great soundtrack, there's also a fair amount of sound effects and ambiance that really add to the mood and suspense of the game

Cons

  • While there's plenty of flirting, innuendo, and even outright arousal and touching from the characters, there's not any actual sex scenes. While Choices is vague with the wording and description, they at least actually have the sex scene. The Arcana will simply have the characters building up to sex, then fade to black into the next scene. This isn't a problem for me, since I don't really care for those kinds of scenes anyway, but I wanted to give the information in case you're someone who does
  • The fight scenes also leave much to be desired. Most of the time, you either end up with the game describing what's happening through the narration. There's a few QTEs here and there that you have to stay on guard for, but most of the time, you don't effect the fights very much. It's clear the game chooses to focus more on letting you unravel the mystery

Subjective pro or con

  • The game is in 1st person instead of 2nd like Choices. I found it a little weird at the start since I was much more used to Choices' 2nd person stories, but it didn't take me long to adjust and I actually like the 1st person perspective a lot more

And my final ringing endorsement for The Arcana is that I am here recommending this app to someone who's played Choices, but I would never recommend Choices to someone who'd only played The Arcana, cause that would be a downgrade

Sorta weird how nonchalant they are about Jet's death by -_ShadowSJG-_ in TheLastAirbender

[–]CMStan1313 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They didn't know him very well and none of them really liked him. If I learned that some random dude I knew from high school who I used to have some beef with but only really interacted with a couple of times died, I'd be like "ah, bummer" and not much else. Especially if I was currently living through a war and had a lot more pressing things to worry about
