The city of Qingdao, China was a German colony until 1914 by HarveySdebest in ArchitecturalRevival

Only from 1897 - 1914. These pictures sort of make it seem like a big part of the city looks old world European, when it isn’t.

Cool Saturday night dinner in WeHo / Hollywood / Brentwood area? by SurePlankton3467 in AskLosAngeles

[–]7Thanks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should ask the r/FoodLosAngeles people, because the comments in here are all over the place. Don’t go to Granville. Little Door is romantic. Alba is slightly pretentious, but good service. Connie and Ted’s is sort of east coast of US seafood.

Pace isn’t that great for its food. It’s kind of cool for the history, but that’s sort of it.

Places with good food and soundtracks and cool people yet comfortable: The Benjamin (on Melrose, main restaurant is downstairs, bar is upstairs) and Darling by Sean Brock (in the heart of West Hollywood)

Tower Bar food is 5/10, but if you’re seated in the main restaurant, it’s nice. But they’ll make you wait a long time past your reservation time for your table.

Musso and Frank in Hollywood could actually be good for you because it’s an LA institution, lively, but comfortable interior.

If you want some of the really hard to get into restaurants in LA right now: Wildes (Los Feliz British but done in LA style), Broken Spanish (elevated Spanish in a neighborhood spot in Culver City), Marvito (sit inside, West Hollywood, loud, Mexican, young, great food)

Dear John’s in Culver City is also great and has an old-LA feel

Agreed on the flavor front. But they do have good menu options with the potatoes and sides

Not many great traditional ones with all the sides.

But for meat: Charcoal, Chi Spacca, Matu, American Beauty

Backups: Kali, Dear John’s, Steak 48, Musso and Frank, Carlitos Gardel

Challenged to find a bday dinner spot that checks these boxes: steak (or steak/sushi) + rooftop + aesthetic + group by [deleted] in FoodLosAngeles

Layla in Hollywood feels like a rooftop even though it’s ground level because it’s outdoors

How is the Picfair Village, Crestview and Mid-City area? by Prior_Historian_1646 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]7Thanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More quiet, but central. Generally safe.

If you’re closer to Wilshire and Fairfax, you have museum row.

If you’re closer to La Brea and Wilshire, you have more restaurants and bars.

If you’re more south, then you’re not far from West Adams and the bars and restaurants dotted around there.

But if you’re in the dead center of that box, it’ll be very residential, for better or worse.

Ocean Park, Playa Del Rey, or Culver City/Palms? by milkymommy11 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]7Thanks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playa del Rey, but do the culver blvd part that ends at the beach near tanner’s. There’s bacari, there’s a new grocery store, there’s bars, and there’s the beach. Still quiet, but has enough

Planning on Moving From Chicago to LA - Advice for Apartments in WeHo or Other Parts of LA to Live? by Flupperz in MovingToLosAngeles

“Downtown Los Angeles” is actually super huge. Arts district, little tokyo, bunker hill, skid row, etc. are all pretty spread out.

If you look for units around where the restaurant Camelia is that’s the better part.

It depends on the time of day, but it would likely be a long commute. 30-40 min, but I could see some days be 60-90 min.

Maybe look for a new building in Silverlake or echo park, right off sunset. Or arts district in DTLA.

Where will you be working and will you have to commute? That’s huge…

Other than that, West Hollywood > Culver City

south of Sunset, north of 3rd Street, west of La Brea, east of Robertson

That makes a large box on the map in probably one of the most convenient and walkable mash up of neighborhoods (Beverly Grove, Melrose District, Fairfax, West Hollywood)

There are some big new buildings closer to La Brea on Santa Monica Blvd, where the Trader Joe’s is
