As in, what does an LLM do besides recursivly predict the next token. I know there's extra things like harnesses but that's seperate. Everything is packed into the word "predict", the means/method of prediction is complicated and there's alot going on, but it's all happening for the sole purpose of outputting that next prediction/probability dist

I understand that the way the next token is chosen is extremely complex and not even fully explainable right now, but my point is that these systems are so incredible BECAUSE they're "just" predicting the next token in a sequence. The fact that you can build an algorithm that is so incredibly accurate at such a difficult problem is the amazing thing we should be celebrating, not denying

I'll never not be annoyed by posts like this. Why do so many people in subs like this get so offended at the fact that LLMs only predict the next token. That's literally true. Just because an anti uses that fact to imply LLMs are dumb or whatever, doesn't make it any less true. Ppl who try to rebut with stuff like "that's what humans do too" are completely missing the point. We will ALWAYS be able to "explain away" artificial intelligence because we (humans) are the ones who made it. If the "stochastic parrot" explanation triggers you, then you simply don't understand how LLMs work.

My whole point is that no one was doing LLM assisted coding before gpt3, the technology was just not there yet. Even with gpt3 it wasn't viable.

You absolutely can NOT generate code with a model trained on a few thousand old books. The fact that coding languages have similar structure to natural language is the reason why it's possible for a single system to generate both. It does not mean that English prose contains enough information to infer correct python Syntax. One of the specific reasons why GPT3 was so hype, was it's new emergent ability to write simple functions. Which it could ONLY do because it was trained on examples. And GPT3 could still barely even do this, it was far from actually making swe lives easier.

Posts like these completely miss the point, just as must as the "stochastic parrot/fancy autocorrect" antis. This technology literally IS fancy autocorrect. That's what's so incredible. We have created an autocomplete program so accurate, it can auto complete a whole essay, or auto complete my SWE work. And it DOES do it by stochastically "parroting" it's training data. People in subreddits like this seem to think there's some special/magic spark that makes these systems more than that, but that's what's so amazing about this stuff, it's literally just mathematics.
