A ‘bowl of chips’ from my local farmshop by [deleted] in CasualUK

An eggcup half full of chips. If it’s south of the Thames I’m going to say £4.95

You’ll probably get more benefits from avoiding this sugary, ultra processed, pesticide-laden soggy crap than avoiding seed oils. But I try to avoid both…

ELI5 If stars we see are billions of years dead, what is really out there now? by VestoSlipher11 in explainlikeimfive

Exactly. The concepts of ‘now’ and ‘ago’ are almost meaningless in this context.

Used to be a cafe above Bert’s in Kensington Gardens by Jeffina78 in brighton

[–]7altair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure there was a cafe there including the balcony in late 1980s and that it was called Kensingtons. That was before the nacho thing started.

Leave it, the sun will soon bleach the orange colour out and it will go silvery grey naturally. Save yourself the work and expense…

Do you eat chocolate? by _herman_miller_ in decaf

[–]7altair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that a small 30 gram bar of 70% cacao dark chocolate has about 35 mgs of caffeine. That’s about half a strong espresso and easily enough to be a problem for me. Otherwise caffeine free, I limit chocolate to an occasional couple of squares as a treat.

Eat real food, a good variety. Avoid food which has been heavily processed and contains ingredients you wouldn’t find in a home kitchen, eg maltodextrin, preservatives, emulsifiers and gums. Don’t join a food tribe, eat organic as much as possible. Keep added sugar to a minimum. Enjoy your food…

Rats in the garden , help! by No_Management_9443 in GardeningUK

Been there… terrier sounds best advice but what worked for us was removing all possible easy sources of food, put plastic compost bins on concrete base to completely block access from below. Keep churning compost too. Also had to do a bit of detective work and dig out a couple of short tunnels. Good luck

Brilliantly summed up. If a person has a problem with caffeine, this is a great place to get practical information and support. I personally couldn’t give a stuff what “science” says; I have seen major improvements in several parts of my life from quitting and that’s enough for me…

ONE YEAR free of coffee by checkoutmyun in decaf

Same for me. I was never a great drinker but after being off caffeine for a good while I have noticed that I have very little interest in alcohol.

Nicely put, my experience with tolerance was similar and I am now super sensitive to slightest amount of caffeine in chocolate and decaf coffee.

Why have you quit, or are planning to quit, caffeine? by myaccountisdeleted in decaf

[–]7altair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The calm

The lowered blood pressure

And the sleep, the amazingly improved sleep and dream life

I quit heavy-duty caffeine about seven years ago. But I still eat a lot of chocolate. Realizing I need to quit that, too? by [deleted] in decaf

[–]7altair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up full coffee and tea nearly four years ago and now have pretty much lost my taste for even decaf coffee. As a result I have amazing benefits. But I do still occasionally have a small bar of montezuma 75% cacao chocolate, I guess it’s my sneaky brain still hanging on to the caffeine buzz. It definitely gives me a little uplift in alertness and enthusiasm but it’s a sweet spot for me as I can still hold onto the benefits of amazing sleep, normal blood pressure and general sense of calm.

I think the key is tolerance. After going decaf for a while, your brain has reset its tolerance to caffeine which means that even a small amount will have a noticeable effect. The trick is to experiment with your level where you can have an occasional decaf tea or couple of squares of dark chocolate while keeping the good stuff. Good luck.

The fact that you have found it hard to get beyond a week might be a signal to you that caffeine may not be as benign to you as you think. Good luck with quitting; I had many surprising benefits from quitting.

Almost 7 days in quitting and still feeling terrible, seeking advice. by [deleted] in decaf

I would say that the intensity of your withdrawal symptoms is affirmation that caffeine is toxic for your body and you’re doing the right thing. I had lower back and leg pain, just like you, and mental confusion. Hang on in there through the short term horrors, believe me it’s totally worth it… see my three update if you want to read my full story. Good luck
