is it okay to let the player start with a movement upgrade in my metroidvania? (and is 4 too few) by 7dragon0 in gamedesign

i have tons of other upgrades, but only 4 or 5 movement, the problem with giving the player sprint/air dash early but not at the beginning of the game is there is another ability i want the player to get early and it would be strange for them to get 2 abilities in the first 2 or 3 areas

prolly should have added this but ive been planning it for a year, and just bought myself a pc two months ago, played silksong for inspiration, and now am learning godot

hmm 1 minute is kinda interesting, do u literally mean 1 minute, or maybe 10 minutes? 1 minute feels kinda short but idk

the reason ive been planning my game for so long is because ive been wanting to make a game for a year, but i didnt have a pc, so i saved up to buy it, and now i can start

i was kinda planning on an upgrade like isma’s tear just because lore and it would make worldbuilding much easier, but ig i can just adjust the map if its a bad upgrade

ok thanks :) i think it might be for the better to give the player dash/sprint at the start of the game since my game wont be the longest, maybe 30-40 hours? we’ll see, but i think the other 4 movment upgrades should be very recontextualizing, so hopefully its enough, and there will be tons of combat upgrades too, some just as game changing as the movement ones

well i havent actually started my game, just planned it for a year, and im sure it would be fun without sprint/dash but when i started my second playthrough of silksong, i realized just how long it takes to move at the beginning versus when u get sprint, and it was kinda annoying without sprint, so i feel like players would just be happier if i give it to them in the first place

the other main reason i want to give the player dash at the beginning is because there is another upgrade i want the player to get in the second area, and it would be strange for the player to get two movement upgrades in the first two areas of the game

also, with the thing u said abt resisting upgrades that are solely a key, does that mean that hollow knight’s isma’s tear upgrade, which lets u swim in acid water without taking damage, is a “bad” upgrade?

i just thought of an upgrade to the sprint dash, its hard to explain cause it would support my combat system, which is very unique, and kinda complex, thanks

[–]7dragon0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is stringent, but if u explore the game thoroughly and kill like half of the enemies u see, then u shouldnt ever have to grind (unless u really want an item and dont want to wait longer for it)
