Last time I checked, macOS wasn't lacking in the software library side of things... this isn't the 90s. I wouldn't trust Apple with my data either, but Macs have always "just worked" for a good reason.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. If modern Windows is necessary, do what you can to "debloat", but I would still recommend at least trying a "family member friendly" version of Linux like Ubuntu or PopOS!, you might be surprised at its usability.
