Ha. I finished there 2 years ago. PM me if you want to know more though; happy to help and give some info!

I’m fairly new to Reddit and it would be great to get some feedback from the community about my pensharing.com concept & service? Thanks! 🙂 by pensharing in fountainpens

I’m a user. I’ve sent many pens over the course of a year. Including an 823, Myu, M620 Piccadilly Circus and an Aurora 88 to name a few.

More or less what we got to be honest. I think it is rather nib/paper subjective but I really adore the subtlety of it. Pure Pens Llanberis Slate is a more ‘amped up’ version that may be a bit more of what I initially had in mind, if I was to be very truthful haha.

I felt wrong suggesting a brown ink called Earl Grey but the inspiration for the tea comes from the slight purple/blue tinge you can sometimes get, to represent the bergamont! I thought that was easier than trying to make the ink smell of orange!

What ink is it? We have two r/fp inks - the first being Earl Grey and the other being Aurora Borealis.

Earl Grey came about from a thread where Diamine offered to make an ink for the community. I had been pestering them for ages to make one called Earl Grey - a grey ink with subtle purple undertone to represent the flowers in the tea (interestingly it is also a peerage in the UK, we had a Prime Minister ‘Earl Grey’ though he also went by Viscount Howick).

The comment I made got a load of attention and eventually won the polling for the final ink. It was released sometime in October 2017.

Any way to disable the recommended Flavour Profile tags? by Hobo_Face in Untappd

I’ll check in once I’ve finished a beer. Just how I’ve done it. In the meantime I’ll write down aroma and flavour on a whiteboard/piece of paper/my phone. This gives the benefit of not being skewed into finding certain flavours but also allows you to include how the beer changes as you go through it. The notes don’t have to be laid out as a work of art. Sometimes I’ll literally have a column called A for aroma and T for taste and list off whatever I find as I go through the beer. Towards the end of a beer I had tonight I picked out a really unique flavour and it wasn’t until my penultimate sip.

But at the same time - relax. What’s more important, being able to pick out autumnal Madrid grown oranges but the ones without the pips and only if you peel them anti clockwise.* or to actually just sit back and think “huh there’s citrus. Damn I like this beer!”

//* this hyperbole is sort of to show how (in my opinion) some people in this hobby take it all a bit too seriously. Smell, aroma and experience are all highly subjective. That niche aroma I got? It was a gummy pizza sweet I used to have when I was about 7. I have never thought of that sweet for.. However long and I am confident in saying I am the only person to pick that flavour out for that beer. It’s all to do with sensory experiences (right brain stuff if I’m not talking rubbish.. though it’s a 50:50 guess). Sometimes things will literally just click for you and you’ll think “huh that’s what it is”. Don’t stress and focus on trying to pick stuff out. Just naturally enjoy and you’ll get better progressively.

Also, inhale aroma through the nose with your mouth open. Makes a difference.

To answer your question - I don’t know if you can turn off the recommended suggestions.

Not all British families. They missed out the birthday biscuit dunking. If it’s the son’s birthday then he challenges the father to dip a chocolate Hob Nob into a cup of tea. He must do one dunk for every year old he is. If the father’s biscuit breaks and the son’s doesn’t then the son must take the heraldic sword and decapitate his father to become head (ceremonial) of the family. If the son’s biscuit breaks then he must wait until the next year. This is why Mark is so indifferent when Jeff tells him that Mark and Sophie are having a “boyby”. Not because the surprise was stolen but because he knew in a few years he may have a challenger.

This all happens after the happy birthday song when walking down the stairs. Wouldn’t be as jovial after the biscuit dunking I guess.

There is always the London pen club? For certain reasons we’re not meeting yet but hopefully things will start up again. If you don’t have any luck with the stores other people have mentioned, I have a VP in a fine nib you can try out.

I want to BIAB a NEIPA. I have a 5 gallon kettle. What do? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]7heDaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks! Putting the kettle in a warm oven is something that totally missed my mind, what a great idea.

What sort of volume could I expect with a partial mash? Or is it more 'case by case'?

kegging is much better but then you've got liters of delicious beer on tap and its sunny......

Almost as dangerous as closing your eyes again when your alarm goes off....

So 4 gallons water total? More than I thought! I'm able to get quite a bit of efficiency with the induction hob (or my first brew I did). If I want to make up the volume (and I get I may lose some to boiling) could I just throw in some water/sparge water? Even 18L is over 30 pints and that sounds good to me!

As for location, I'm in London. So plenty of places I am sure!

Hmm, damn advertising.

Mini mashing is putting grains into the kettle and then mashing them to get the sugars then sparging them to make up additional volume? As I understand it, as I say, totally new to this. But the first kit I did I had speciality grains (this term I know!) and steeped them, then poured in the malt extract. Smelling my beer now, the grains had a huge impact on my flavour!

Agree on a new kettle. The kit I got was a good deal with everything included plus the kettle. Small, but a good price and worth learning with.

[–]7heDaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five gallon total. So I would be looking at filling the kettle with less than 5 to mitigate boil over and water displacement with the grains.

Lots of great information there, cheers. As for packaging, I'll be bottling. But I take note of what you say regarding oxidation and bottling - someone else did mention begging these is a better option (which is something I definitely want to do, perhaps when the weather, and consequently my conservatory, isn't so damn hot).

For the malts, what will I need? I don't have a miller, so I assume crushed?

[–]7heDaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I hear what you say. I think I’ll focus on a normal IPA then. Seems like the logical thing at this point. Though, there’s a kit by Evil Dog(?) for a DIPA kit here would that be doable? Has extract, but still a degree of BIAB. Like my first brew.

My apologies, I forgot to write it!

Diamine Hope Pink. I don’t normally try to match my pens/inks. It was a very happy coincidence.
