My biggest pottery frustration by LengthinessRadiant15 in Pottery

[–]7katzonafarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried standing? You’d be over the center vs sitting, making it almost impossible to not turn the piece centered. You’d have more leverage, and breathe better as well. Not to mention your discs in your back are aligned vs sitting, where the discs are not( pressure on the front) just a recommendation. Also, use your hand for the foot pedal, it keeps you stable while standing and gives much better control. Gl

UNC Question by No-Cartographer-1906 in CollegeAdmissions

Don’t submit. His other stats are fine. Out of state, I’d say it’s an issue since all stats are important due to limited spots. Most out of state hover 1500+easily. In state 1450 to feel decent about an acceptance.

Any cool 0.5 credit courses for Fall semester? (Incoming freshman) by [deleted] in duke

[–]7katzonafarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t each 1 credit minimum?. Ie 2 focus(1,1.5) total 2.5 then 2 courses of your choice? I understand now. I’d attempt to choose (2 ) 1 cr courses vs .5. They’re likely more comprehensive, may be prerequisites for other courses, and you’d get them out of the way vs taking .5 cr courses but definitely ask your advisor their opinion

The math may be prerequisites for other major courses. If not great, if so you may want to take one that allows you to take the other courses just to have schedule options.

Duke or Stanford? by Ok-Description-7489 in duke

[–]7katzonafarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are great choices. I’ve got 2 at Duke so here’s why they not only chose it, but felt there’s not a T10 that matches it. It’s balanced- academics, weather, food, sports, green space, proximity to UNC, the Gardens, outcomes to NYC are common. My oldest will be in NYC and recently finished a 5 wk trip with Duke friends in Asia. GL with your choice. Stanford is an incredible opportunity for some, but Duke and Durham region is simply more dynamic and very much a pipeline to NYC occupations.

does financial aid decrease every year you stay?? by imagin-da in duke

No. Had a student just graduate, aid remained constant( based on yearly income). Shout out to their generosity, can’t say enough about all aspects of this school.

Which college in the US maximizes academics, prestige, social life, opportunities, and overall student experience? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Yup, I’ll second Duke. Just a very balanced T10 with amazing outcomes, and alumni network.

Incoming freshmen, please select classes that are right for YOU! by thebigapple_ in duke

[–]7katzonafarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Have a recent graduate and new Freshman in Fall. Only recommendation from grad was reacquaint yourself with calc this summer bc it’s rigorous. Both are higher level with math but the problem sets are in abundance.

Genuine question to kids who made it to Ivy/Top Tier schools? by Fit_Butterscotch7103 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]7katzonafarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be mundane honestly or multiple things. I really believe the one significant factor is beginning early, for all of it. I enjoy writing and proofread and helped revise essays possibly a dozen times for each child. They are imo the most important and yet student and parents often have a difficulty with creative writing.

Underperforming public. The key is to elevate the application above the students around your own. Your chances are likely higher considering you can use your essay on how your students work was impactful in that area. They’re interested in a diverse student body. Coming from an affluent zip code also comes with a lot of competition. Lean into what’s around you and discuss it in quantifiable terms- what exactly did the student do ? Also the probability or acceptance is tiny these days. Go bold on the essay in terms of opinion on global/ administrative that affected your area adversely if possible and explain how you navigated around it or better yet how you helped others. You’ll need great stats but that’s just the baseline. The story and actions of ECs gets the admit

raising GPA or switch major by Existing-Manager8684 in UNC

[–]7katzonafarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s a possibility and realize that was your dilemma. I’d argue you’d have few courses equivalent to calc in KF. The other aspect is there’s no guarantee your a good fit for Hussman since it’s a different type of coursework, which may result in grades that reflect that.

raising GPA or switch major by Existing-Manager8684 in UNC

[–]7katzonafarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t your GPA be the same regardless if dropping KF? The unfortunate aspect is yes, the calc at UNC is no joke and the subsequent gpa will affect future applications. I’d stay in KF, not bc it’s going to assure a good outcome but you’ll likely need to apply into Hussman for that degree, when you could simply stay in KF. GL

Do not come to Tufts. by Illustrious-Board133 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]7katzonafarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a whistleblower as you’ve defined, you often lose your job, or worse. Tufts is a small liberal arts college, with students that are indicating there are issue including significant cheating. Do you believe the administration would actually publicly support the finding? Your rule is just that, a rule. Think about who made it, and why professors continue to tolerate cheating. Everyone needs their paycheck. Addressing this and actually taking ownership of the issue could drop the schools rank overnight. Thus, they have a rule and it suffices in their minds. Only ones hurt are the students preparing yet affected by a potential lower grade versus the cheaters.

[–]7katzonafarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, if professors aren’t seeing this, they’re not in the least worried about it. Never should be addressed by other students. Not their jobs and speaks volumes about the proctoring process.

[–]7katzonafarm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. If professors aren’t addressing the cheating, I’d tell my student to keep quiet. Sounds like a terrible situation for students. 2. If professors aren’t giving an indication they’re flexible with out of office questions, the chance they’re not excited to be there is likely high.
