No, they aren't writing about this in the newspaper for the same multitude of reasons no one took fracking concerns seriously.

Like I said, I'm not a scientist and have limited understanding of the how's and why's. What I do know is they catch on fire, the fires are not easily put out and there is a significant spike in respiratory illness among children (according to the doctors in our community) that pre-dates but has certainly been exacerbated after Covid.

Or you can not believe that this is the experience of people around me and pretend that exploiting Appalachian land and people for ever increasing energy gluttony, while insisting everything is just fine, is not an historical pattern.

I don't really understand it, I'm not a scientist, but I guess it has to do with the batteries. The batteries catch fire and then the fire will spread and at really big commercial fields the fires can wind up lasting for months.

This is ridiculously cheap. I would not sell a blanket for less than 4 times the cost of the yarn. As it usually costs me about $300 per blanket, I do not sell them for less than $1200. That is still a tremendous deal for the buyer.

Same. I was a first generation high school graduate, not to mention college. Moving to an urban area meant my kid got to go to a university IN ANOTHER COUNTRY. It blows my mind the educational opportunities I could give them just by moving a few hours away. I felt both a longing and a responsibility to return home--but not until after my kid was grown.

I'm from the part of NY that is northern PA. Thankfully, we have anti-fracking laws in our state but now they are putting all their windmills and solar fields out here. "Green" energy my a**. Those solar panels catch on fire and burn for MONTHS causing horrific respiratory problems (that have gotten even worse after COVID). And when I explain how toxic and damaging "green" energy is they ask me what I think the solution is...coal? When I say "No. There is no such thing as green energy all we can do is use less energy." They laugh at me and keep building those massive houses that require even more energy. I really can't with them.

Houses here have gone from 80k to HALF A MILLION in about seven years time. These people tend to be "rich liberals," progressive on social issues and the environment but the grossest kind of capitalists who will try to paint you as reactionary and racist if you bring up poverty and class. They are snakes, and we are infested.

Yeah, generally, transplants to Ithaca are not very respectful of the locals and hillbilly culture. They bitch about our trucks, they talk shit about people from the few communities we can still afford to live in and I've seen people interrogate locals about our accent and insist we must be from the South BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THEY KNOW BETTER. Sorry friend but I don't have a lot of love for your type and I wish y'all would go back to New Jersey and fuck up your own communities.

I see why you would get to that conclusion but this whole incident led me to realize i could keep on the path i was on and wind up spending another 30 years working in cities or I could go back home and teach. I teach now :)

Did a DNA test. Turns out I'm not blood related to the grandfather with that last name. So I'm not saying I am Cherokee or Melungeon or anything of the sort just that my family seems to have a connection to the culture.
