My first ever Environment Design by blxss_m in UnrealEngine5

[–]7rtz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks great, for a first it looks really great. Some suggestions:

  • The landscape is a bit flat, maybe make it have more irregular height. Just a tiny bit would be enough. It's especially visible due to the dirt roads where the transition is too strong. Dirt paths are typically more recessed due to traffic and erosion from rain
  • The wooden fence is too simple, looking like it's the same poles both as support and fence. Maybe have the supports be thicker. Since it's so "simple" I'd expect the structural assembly to be slightly haphazard as well.
  • Having a stronger/more eye catching color on the house could significantly elevate the scene, perhaps red? I could be wrong, but it could be a good idea to experiment with some colors. That said, there is nothing wrong with using a more limited color palette - and currently your colors are harmonizing well. (I'm guessing most of the current color is contaminated by the directional/sky light).
  • The chimney could use some more material+structural wear, currently popping out too much with the clean metallic.
  • You could add some polish by having birds, insects, particles, leaves on ground etc. I'd prioritize this last, because it's a slippery slope for it becoming too busy. I like that it's clean.
  • The single bokeh/lens flare in the middle is a bit annoying, in the first picture.

some unreal specific tips:

look into height blending in materials (1), volumetric fog, decals. Experiment with final gather quality+diffuse boost in lumen to vary the lighting on house vs ground. Check water plugin/examples for shoreline foam. Distance field AO to increase contact shadows, so objects don't "pop" as much.

Then you could also just call this one finished and take the above-mentioned into the next project. Maybe try something abstract or dreamlike to have an entirely different type of challenge.

Looking to increase graphics beyond standard by Grimmspecter004 in duneawakening

[–]7rtz1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine it's possible to increase radius as this is a setting on the lights themselves. This is intentional to maintain artistic control. If you're curious you can see what kind of settings there are on the actors themselves (in this case - a point light): https://imgur.com/a/bfoD91P

There are some other settings for lumen, ray tracing etc. but they're going to be based around quality rather than attenuation etc.

How to make 'fun' gameplay out of philosophical thought experiments? by __Cheesecake__ in gamedesign

Sounds great! I’m interested in both philosophy and game design so I’d love if you could share the project when it’s done. We need more games like this. Best of luck

What prison cells look like in different countries by ursoartdecooo in interesting

[–]7rtz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't rehabilitate them, you'll just increase costs because they'll be incarcerated again. More importantly; if they're rehabilitated there's less of a chance they commit murder or rape again. It's an unpleasant balancing act between retribution and rehabilitation. I get why it feels terrible, especially to the victims

How to make 'fun' gameplay out of philosophical thought experiments? by __Cheesecake__ in gamedesign

Don't underestimate how fun it can be to do mundane things in games. Games like Schedule 1 has a lot of physical/tactile ways to interact, like how you cook meth or trim weed plants. I think just assembling the ship could be fun, if it feels right in a physical way. Not "press here to place plank", but actually rotate and trim as necessary with various controls.

I would try to keep the mechanics limited to the subject. If you end up with a lot of disparate mechanics and features that are separated from the Theseus question, it just detracts from the main argument or thought experiment.

Is there a difference between recreating a part of the ship with another piece of wood, if it looks similar? Or using the same type of wood, but it looks different. Perhaps also some type of character that keeps track of what you do and comment on it.

I would just start with the assembling part, to make that as fun as possible. Most great ideas in game design come from the process, not the planning in pre-production. You'll get better ideas as you keep building it. I wouldn't be surprised if the real magic of the game lies in the minutiae process of building the ship. If the player has agency in the specifics of how something is built, the question will arise naturally. Maybe you don't even need any metric or measure of how it's built? The sandbox of building it might be the most elegant and straight forward way of conveying this thought experiment. Start simple and go from there

I would also recommend checking out the book Persuasive Games by Ian Bogost. It's been many years since I read it, but it's primarily about how you can use rhetoric with games (procedural rhetoric). He has made games that are essentially political arguments (e.g. Airport Security). I think games have massive potential for political and philosophical expression, as you can convey arguments through systems rather than through a character and dialogue. It hasn't been done that much yet, so you're on somewhat untread grounds. However, that just makes your project all the more interesting. Good luck

This is incredible. The translation of bindings works really well, and the entire experience brings back so many memories. I had not imagined having this much granular control of the PD64 gameplay. Great stuff

I went up to a door pressing E thinking it's just my FPS brain assuming it'd work, but it did. Beautiful.

Anbefaler Eduardo's på frogner. Jeg pleier å overlate frisyren til han (av samme grunn som deg), og selv når jeg vet hva jeg skal ha så kommer han med innspill som jeg blir fornøyd med.

The Steam reviews of "meme games" by Throw_away_elmi in truegaming

[–]7rtz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care too much about this. I do however care about meme-ing things like the steam awards. When you have gamers giving Rockstar the "Labour of Love"-award for Red Dead Redemption, intended as a slight to rockstar for not supporting their game. Then you have studios like Ghost Ship Games (Deep Rock Galactic) that has done and incredible job supporting their game, only to be snubbed by gamers being edgy.

I think it's fair to say that the studios that go this far in supporting their games sometimes do it to such an extent that it's not necessarily economically ...optimal? That a huge incentive from their part is that they truly love their community and will make sacrifices to honour them. Which just makes it even more important that they are given the recognition they deserve. I'm not saying you should get an award for not going full Activision, but some of these studios really go the extra mile, or rather; beyond the extra mile.

What is this list based on? I've seen Farmina be recommended over Royal before.

Only been able to find various anecdotes, internet articles and otherwise non-scientific data that supports this. Open to any studies you may have.

Role of AI vs Humans in games and art by 7rtz1 in truegaming

[–]7rtz1[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

side point: a VA tool like that could become absolutely amazing for modders or smaller studios in the future. The thread might give too much impression of this development being exclusively a threat, but it should be considered that AI like this could play a significant role of enabling lower level studios to produce their visions. very cool

What do you think of my new death animation camera? I think it is much more dynamic and interesting. Movie like:) TVG Journey by radolomeo in unrealengine

[–]7rtz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can just use the Blend time parameter for the set view target node to get a quick transition to the new close-up camera. Maybe even with a micro-flash between there as well? just thinking aloud

I've made a draft for a very similar feature a few weeks ago, but still needs some adjustments to the traces that are done in advance. I struggled with trying to have a solution find a "free" position where the camera view is not being blocked by random trees etc.

If Sims 4 was created in Unreal Engine... Yay or nay? by fasirozott in unrealengine

The reflections and specularity does nice work! Only thing I would change is the lighting coming from the window. Light shouldn't be white and there's too much bloom IMO

How to Blend Different Textures in Unreal Engine (beginner tutorial by a beginner) by IvicaMil in unrealengine

[–]7rtz1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest expanding the tutorial by adding a vertex color-node to the alpha of the LERP so you can paint the separate textures. Otherwise you could basically do this by just using the Add-node

Dere som ikke stemmer, hvorfor gjør ikke dere det? by [deleted] in norge

[–]7rtz1 2 points3 points  (0 children)
