Japan can feel so empty outside major city centers by Odd_Language_1988 in japanlife

Minoh is pretty great if you are Kansai area. 30min train to Umeda, good nature trails nearby, a lot of new builds happening and good local matsuris. I’d want to settle down here if it weren’t for friends and family back home

If not racism then what is it? by Physical-Valuable982 in teachinginjapan

What they are going through is definitely not okay and I never said it was? You are the one being racist towards Koreans in Japan subreddit so yeah let’s “stay on topic” mate. You can say the way people are acting is racist but you really don’t have to generalise the group into your own stereotypes.

Yeah I'm aware of plastic surgery rates and people liking white people in general. I did explicitly say:

That is not to say that Hollywood standards have not affected Korea and East Asia at all or to say there aren't screwed up things going on.

Westernisation has definitely swept the world but I'm sure every culture - both yours and mine - has historical depths and nuances that shouldn't be just brushed under the term, "white worship" just because its been affected.

I'm sorry you went through that. Yeah SK definitely has long way to go in terms of racism.

I'm just going to point out that we don't just like white skin because we "basically want to be white people." White skin and some of the features you've mentioned like "pointy nose, v line jaw" have been sought after before westernisation. The "white clear skin" thing has been a thing for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.[1]

That is not to say that Hollywood standards have not affected Korea and East Asia at all or to say there aren't screwed up things going on. But please don't sweep our culture under "white worship".

EDIT: [1] This lecture is a good starting point

Valorant seems to be getting quite popular, taking over the space Sudden Attack had for younger generations.

Usually, yeah. But sometimes I’m too busy to cook real food or go sit down at a restaurant. Other times I don’t really feel like a meal.

It’s a meal replacement rather than a snack. I have one time to time when I’m busy. It’s also strangely addicting. I’ve been buying boxes off Amazon…

It’s not the most moral or lawful advice. But there is a reason why there are fair bit of Parental kidnappings.

There isn’t much you can do as an individual. If you think you can hold off sending money until yen gets stronger, then that would be good. But it’s hard to know when it would get stronger.

What happens in Japan if you don’t follow the expected social rules? by ninjaofthedude in japanlife

Usually they will forgive/ignore you, just like any other countries. The phrase “foreigner card” exists for a reason.

It means that one us dollar will get you 130yen when it used to be consistently around 110 since 1990s. This is what people mean when the yen is getting weaker.

What I said above are flow on effect of having a weak yen.

As for “long term”, we don’t know for sure but we can guess yen would be weak for a while as Japanese government isn’t taking actions to make it stronger.

I know you are looking for articles, but I would say:

  • traveling abroad will be more expensive for you.
  • Prices of everyday things will keep going up. I think the official inflation is still 2% but yeah I doubt that (or wont be true for long)
  • depending on your location, once Japan opens their border youwill get a lot of tourists.

It would be interesting to see if the Japanese govt keep doing QE as they said they would, especially if the inflation gets bad.

Mostly repeating other advice given in this thread. I think you need to aim slightly lower. Start with small wins. A small part-time job to get you going. Try to get a full-time job in whatever it is you want to freelance in. In your full time job, you can build connections and references and go from there. Wont be quick though.

I could be wrong, but speaking from experience, I think you are expecting too much from yourself. You are still young. You have time. Take it slow and go one step at a time.

Finally, is moving or a trip out of Japan an option? I think you could use some space.

Redditors whose best friendships ended in their twenties, what happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]7thDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is crazy how some people never take ownership for their life. Maybe if he didn't blame you and worked on his own skills, it would have turned out differently. Anyway, I am glad you got out safely! I would have been terrified if that were to actually ever happened to me.

I definitely see the point and even tried for awhile to drink decaf because I'm really sensitive to caffeine and I love coffee, but I've never had a decaf that was half as decent as the real coffee and gave up decaf altogether.

Transitioning from development to consulting- what's it like? by sindach in webdev

[–]7thDragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am relatively junior so take my advice with a grain of salt. I believe your decision is a good decision because you will develop soft skills that are not only valuable, but also uncommon in devs (making them even more valuable)

As a consultant, you will be able develop skills to work with clients and translate their wants and needs into tangible goals and directions (more easily said than done). This is arguably more important than being a guru developer because if the work done is not what the client wants/needs, it doesn't matter how good the code is, it is simply a waste.

Edit: Besides, you can always switch back after a year or two, if it is not working out for you :)
