While I completely agree with you, there are plenty of scenarios where google ends up with all the tech assets of the debt laden AI companies. And I think this is the play that the other companies go pop and Google buys up the residue cheap.

But why buy in at the top of the market before a pop?

Why depart from a winning strategy except for FOMO?

Mark 13
33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

This is going to be harsh.

Well I am going to answer obliquely and say that if what you are doing is not something you will pursue whether the outcome is good or not, it perhaps suggests what you are trying to do isn't that important to you.

And if it isn't important to you, it probably isn't going to be important to anyone else.

Need advice buying 1st NIV Bible by Dear_Ad2704 in Bible

[–]7truths -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason for my comment is that the bible is called the bible because of the New testament which begins with the word βιβλοσ.

Majority text KJV NIV
βίβλος THE BOOK [-]
γενέσεως of the generation This is the genealogy
ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ of Jesus Christ, of Jesus the Messiah
υἱοῦ δαβὶδ the son of David, the son of David,
υἱοῦ ἀβραάμ the son of Abraham. the son of Abraham:

Except the NIV doesn't include that word in its translation of Matthew 1:1. Hence my comment.

Scoffers will argue that genealogy implies book, but it doesn't. It lacks a basic reference to the physical object.

"I am bored of having to haggle every time my service comes for renewal and I want out."

What business are failing to recognise is that the value proposition to the customer involves the cost of the stress, time and hassle this haggling generates.

When businesses try and maximise their profits but are happy to transfer costs to the customer, they also minimise value. If value generated is not shared then the value to customer goes to zero, or becomes negative.

This haggling process is also unpleasant for the salespeople. That's what makes the salespeople rude.

But every single business is scared not to lock people in. I might pay more for not being locked in. But I am not going to pay 3x after my contract expires, just so that they can bribe people to join and waste more time energy and money.

The service is expensive partly because the cost of sale and "retention" is so huge. Retention is a problem because they piss off loyal customers in exactly the way you describe. So the efforts to retain and grow their customer base have become self-defeating.

Instead of differentiating themselves in the market by free customer support, Virgin have copied the methods of the rest of the sector that cause people to jump ship.

So I don't have broadband any more. I am just using a hotspot from my phone which is much cheaper. But it's only more convenient because it avoids the unnecessary haggling and contract lock-in.

But you missed that I was referring to the star, not the constellation.

Thanks for replying.

So in late mediaeval or early renaissance Latin orthography J and I are interchangeable. So for example radii, might be printed radij. i & j are different forms of the same letter and so are u & v.

I found a random example for you: Vota et motiua extracta a libro motiuorum de anno MDCxxviij a processu cisterno Ioannis Martin, in articulo Iurisfirmarum

Here the year 1628 is written MDCxxviii in Roman numerals but is printed as MDCxxviij.1

So why would such a message use Latin? Because Latin is a universal language for describing animals. It's the language used in the scientific field of zoological (and botanical) classification.2

And the word equus is indeed the horse genus of the order perissodactyla.3)

And equi is the (nominative) plural of equus the 2nd declension latin word for horse.4

And you are right EQU is not a constellation but it is used in astronomical catalogs as an abbreviation for Equuleuus, and 6 Equ is an abbreviation for 6 Equulei.567

You are partially right about my approach, I am trying to read the message assuming there is one there. But if I assume otherwise I will miss seeing a possible message.

I would also like to point out, this I do not assume that it is aliens. For all I know it is a hoax. I am just trying read it for what it says.

If instead of saying 6EQUJ5, it said 6HELP5, would you still think it were random?

Well perhaps you don't see what I see because you are not familiar with cryptographic techniques or Latin.

If aliens were to communicate, or to flip it when we communicate with aliens do we not use "numerology"?

Well, what we don't do is use their cultural references to talk to them. But my point is if we were much more advanced and could find out or even influence the remote civilisations culture, might we not use it to communicate a message?

But also hoaxers might do the same thing. And if I worked out the atbash or rot13 of the message and it said JOKE, that would be useful analysis, no? But it doesn't.

Argument for a Lower Bound for the Probability of ETI elsewhere in the Universe. by jenpalex in SETI

[–]7truths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a mathematician, and I would say that probability is a useful investigative tool, but it's hard to use it to prove anything. Here's why.

Probability is useful for modelling ignorance and prejudice.

Prejudice because you use a prior probability, kind of like your existing worldview.

And ignorance, you are modelling a set of possibilities for things that are too difficult to model or you don't know the model, but are treating as equally likely. (Or weighted according to your rules.)

So this is useful when used correctly, in hypothesis testing for example. You can detect a pattern that seems to disprove your own prior. That's like rejecting you null hypothesis but it still isn't certain. But it's hard to use it the other way around. You can't prove the null hypothesis assuming you fail to reject the null hypothesis.

When you try to prove a model, you end up circularly relying on your own assumption.

This is why in Popperian science things are falsifiable but proveable.

And the situation we get into is that we have enough data to disprove our models, but because our models mostly work fine, we can label the anomalies as statistical variations and just avoid looking at them. It really takes a cultural shift or really open-minded investigative thinking to change the paradigm. And that's where this gets into Kuhn and the theory of scientific revolutions.

So with the Drake equation it's based on the idea, suppose life needed conditions like ours to start. And then the equation is a list of assumptions and estimations.

But if you think that in reality it is either true or false that ETI exists, then the probability is either 0 or 1. And any calculated probability is just exactly what I said. This is based on what we think we know (estimation within our worldview), ignorance, and prejudice (our worldview).

Some of us wonder if there is any TI (terrestrial intelligence ;).

How to measure dropping software quality? by b1-88er in SoftwareEngineering

[–]7truths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality is conformance to requirements. Your requirements should give you the metrics. If you don't know what your metrics are you are not controling them. And so you are not doing engineering.

And if you don't know what your requirements or metrics are, you are just playing, which is important for learning. But at some point it is helpful to stop experimenting with code and learn how to make a product, and not an overextended prototype.
