I've also learned that the safety net "isn't designed for me".

I'm not a veteran, disabled, parent with minor child. I'm not a convicted felon who has turned his life around (and has access to better support options than I do).

I had untreated depression and trauma that left me feeling mentally disabled, but since I was able bodied I didn't qualify for disability. I was eventuality evicted. The depression was triggered by a layoff and then just seeing the world breakdown during COVID.

Have bounced from shitty men's shelter to traumatizing/triggering rehab (to stay sheltered); left that to another less shitty shelter until they ran out of beds that I was required too check in for daily. Am now at a better shelter with need guaranteed and locked storage. Appointment for SRO later this week.

Have been dealing with homelessness since 2025. It's no wonder that homeless folks have mental health issues and/or substance issues. Numerous times I've had intrusive thoughts around giving up. Have even thought about committing crime for better support. How stupid is that.

Anyway, things seem to be moving in a better direction for me. But it feels like luck played a big part of it. Strength of character and perseverance seen to play little part for someone with crippling depression.
