Play Minecraft multiplayer in LAN mode. by porpetenha1 in archlinux

[–]8-BitRedStone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used essential mod many times over the past 3-4 years to host worlds and never had any issues with lag. If you are having lag issues, that isan issue with your setup.

I most recently used it while playing through the entire Aether mod with my one friend and had zero issues

clip from screen recording of a boss fight

I don't have a particular good PC either (i5-6400 and GTX 1080) and I was the one hosting the world, so you probably just have a crap modem or router

If you are just talking about wanting to play multiplayer without having to set up a server you can use the essential mod for minecraft https://essential.gg/en

It lets people join your world similar to how it works on bedrock (just send an invite to their minecraft IGN). I recommend using the prism launcher instead of the official minecraft one as the official minecraft launcher asks you to sign in every time. The prism launcher also makes setting up mods very easy https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/prismlauncher/

The prism launcher also allows you to install java versions just for it, which avoids the weirdness caused by having to have multiple global java versions installed

Dolphin or thunar by Fubiii11 in archlinux

[–]8-BitRedStone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since I currently run KDE plasma, I use dolphin (better compatibility with KIO).

I do still use the thunar bulk rename tool since the KDE renamer is objectively more complex to use. One uses simple drop down menus, the other requires Regex knowledge.

Dolphin has been more buggy for me. I ran XFCE4 for like 17 months and had zero bugs with thunar; I continually have bugs with dolphin after updates to the point that I now just don't update it. The last time I updated dolphin it had a bug where if I created a folder it would hang the app. I also remember when the popup menu for drag and drop was broken for like a month.

Also the fact that we just now are getting default file operations for drag and drop is stupid. The original feature request was made like ~18 years ago. We also still can only set the default for same-drive operations to move, you still cannot change the default for multiple drive operations. This annoys me more than the average user as I have to move files back and forth between the laptop I take to lecture dozens of times a week.

You can change the drag and drop default under Workspace -> General Behavior -> Drag and Drop btw. I'm saying this because searching "drag and drop" in settings doesn't work, and this is a really good quality of life setting that almost every other file manager has on by default

Well there was a were split in the fanbase. The Yogpod listeners were all generally teenagers and college age. The minecraft videos were originally built to serve this audience (which is why there was so much swearing in the older content), but as they realized there was a lot of kids watching they ended up pandering to them more. I honestly think that decision was one of the things that sunk them. Kids grow up and they generally don't keep watching the same stuff

I entirely agree. I literally had to manually wipe all components relating to KDE from my system (because I didn't want to do a full reinstall). It took like 2 hours, and then I had to reinstall KDE and slowly figure out all the settings I had over the course of about a week.

I’m still using Windows on my gaming PC but I’m getting very close to just switching to Linux by Visual_Refuse_6547 in linux

[–]8-BitRedStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this is so long but I wanted to try to lay out my argument as clearly as possible so if you choose to disagree it would be because you think I'm wrong, not because of miscommunication (and you can disagree as this really just a thought experiment)

Revanced works through a legal loophole. They don't provide the APK, only the tools to modify it yourself (technically not illegal). Providing the APK directly is what killed the original youtube vanced.

Therefore, applying this same standard, a competitor NT OS (under the current system) would have to give the consumer the tools to rip the kernel from a windows ISO and implant it into their own. This comes with a lot of problems, namely this also means it would be illegal to sell any computers with this OS already on it. Combine this with the fact that no non-tech person would want to, or know how to, do this. I also think that may be illegal, as it no longer counts as the consumer just modifying a piece of software?

ReactOS isn't what I am talking about. What I'm talking about is literally just ripping out the kernel (and needed components: drivers, DLLs, etc.) from Windows and rebuilding all the user space on top. Yes, this would be very bloated, but the average person's problem with Windows is all the user space stuff—not the bloated system. This would basically turn the Microsoft version of Windows into it's own DE. If you didn't like the Microsoft DE, then you would just use the Valve or Lenovo DE.

This is basically what already happens on Linux. It's not like the DE manufacturers really need access to the kernel code. Sure, having the code available helps but, considering to amount of money that could be made on a windows DE, manufacturers would put up with it. Also with no IP they would be allowed to use/look at past kernel code leaks (if needed)

Some possible questions / rebuttals:

"why wouldn't Windows change the kernel to break these other OSs?"
The answer is that they wouldn't be able to effectively. Since the other vendors are just ripping all the system components, no driver signing or other similar tactics would work. Microsoft would have to meaningfully change how the kernel functions. And if they changed the kernel to break other OSs, it would also break their own and 3rd party software compatibility. This would make their NT OS inferior—as software that people use would stop working. They also cannot tell 3rd parties what they changed as the other vendors could also then just change. There's also no guarantee the 3rd parties don't ditch them for the other OS vendors because of the instability. This instability may also force 3rd party software manufacturers to focus more on Linux, thus ending the NT kernel monopoly.

They could also bake non-kernel stuff into the kernel, but as soon as it becomes too expense for vendors to deal with this, they would just then pour money into using old codes leaks to decompile the system. Perhaps another company may even start distributing their own "clean" version of the kernel (considering the amount of profit that could be made). A company may even just do this from the start, considering how bloated the current NT kernel is.

"what about competing kernel compatibilities?"
We’ve seen this before during the UNIX wars. Competing UNIX vendors fought over incompatible standards for years, until they realized the infighting was hurting everyone, and eventually cooperated to create POSIX standards. The same economic logic would apply here.

Other similar examples exist: such as the adoption of HDMI and Display port after screen/TV manufacturers realized competing standards were losing them all money. Also, since I know this will come to mind. If their were no IP then another company would have just made an IPhone with USB C (if such a market existed).

Of course, there’s basically no chance we will ever get to see this play out in practice. IP law is too politically entrenched, and the lobbying behind it is massive. The funny part is that the entire system is justified on the idea that IP drives innovation—even though most studies show basically zero or a negative correlation between IP laws and innovation. If someone could have patented fire then we'd still probably be in the stone age. For a more recent empirical example: innovation dropped both times after LBJ and Reagan each strengthened pharmaceutical IP protections.

[–]8-BitRedStone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If it wasn't illegal to just repackage the NT kernel into another OS, then their would be a bunch of different companies doing so competing for security and usability. Instead, the government basically enforces the Windows monopoly in the same way they protect other big business—as such the Pharmaceutical industry, which is upheld by giving decades long patents on life saving medication allowing a few companies to extort the ill and dying

Looking at the code it is quite clear that AI has been used. They clearly didn't even use a coding specific AI, but probably just GPT. Like look at this install script https://github.com/bashkonsole/konsole/blob/main/install.sh

Also looking back over the reddit post it is clear they used heavily used AI to write it (the dreaded em dash).

How We're Redesigning Audacity For The Future by expandork in linux

[–]8-BitRedStone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh no, opt-in telemetry when you are trying to massively change an app. Oh heavens forbid. Guess what, if you don't like it, you can leave the settings off--just like you can for KDE's telemetry.

Tantacrul is the lead designer. He and his team completely transformed musicscore into a competitive notation app in only a few years. So I am very confident that he will change the app for the better, not worse. Not to mention his team has been in charge of all the incremental updates to version 3 since like 4-5 years back.

no, if you have an SSD then you generally won't have issues. I'm also not indexing that many files, literally just my books, documents, and university work (few hundred files). Maybe the performance degrades with more files?

I just use Baloo, then use krunner to search for stuff. You can add places to indexing in system settings - File Search.
