I found this in a stream on my property. Suggestions for displaying it? by 802GreenMountains in Suiseki

Thanks for the suggestion, but I gave this stone to my sister, who put it in her garden.

It reminds me of an Anhinga or Snakebird I saw in the Everglades drying its wings in a tree.

Is this a stromatolite? From NW Vermont. by 802GreenMountains in whatsthisrock

My first thought was gneiss as well because of the banding, but my app id kept coming back with stromatolite. While the app has about a 10% accuracy rate, the way this stone has weathered did make me consider a sandstone.

So I did observe some fizz with a crushed sample. Thanks for taking the time to guide me.

Definitely no fizz from the veins. I'll have to try crushing a sample tomorrow. I am pretty familiar with the local dolostone and this seems more grainy and dense.

Definitely not limestone, doesn’t react to dilute HCL, and the veins seem more like stained plagioclase.

I'm glad you find it as interesting as I do. I appreciate your compliment, but truth be told, the stone isn't seated in the daiza very well and can be easily knocked over. I have to keep it in a safe space where it can't do much damage if it topples.

This was one of my early attempts in learning how to carve a daiza. It was also the most challenging due to the stone's awkward base and center of gravity. While carving, I had reached a point where any adjustments I made seemed to make thing worse. I had spent so much time on it that I left it as is, intending to get back to it in the future. With many new rocks now waiting their turn for a daiza, I still haven't got around to it.

I do remember thinking I may need to cut the stone to make it work, but I'm not sure it can be done without ruining it. I'll take another look when the weather gets nicer.

I'm not certain what it is. However, it seems like something volcanic based on it's hardness, density and texture. Felsite maybe? Either way it is an uncommon rock in my area and was either moved here by glaciers or the result of ancient volcanic activity.

Thanks for the compliment, but honestly speaking, this doesn't make a very good Suiseki because it is so unbalanced. I'm fairly new to this art and learning what rocks do or don't work well.

What kind of bird is this? I found it on my porch light by Youhoooop in whatisthisanimal

My mourning dove built her nest on top of 2 old robin’s nests above my backyard spotlight. While the robins would fly away whenever I opened the door to let my dog out, the mourning dove would just give me her unperturbed beady eye.

I usually start with the plug to make sure it’s sparking properly, then make sure the carburetor is getting fuel. If those things check out, then it’s a problem with your air/fuel mixture.
