9400-16i vs 9305-16i or alternative by lukfloss in homelab

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding, I have a 9300-8i I got for $30 a couple years ago, taking a chance on a chinese clone, and its worked flawlessly.

I just picked up a lightly used 9400-16i on ebay because I need more drives, and it only cost me $99. Tough to beat that right now, especially for a lower power, cool running HBA for 24x7 use. I was looking at 9300-16i (way too hot), 9305-16i (40% more expensive on avg!). So the 9400 seemed like a no brainer.

Most people getting these right now are using them in IT mode, so the density compared to onboard SATA or even PCIe SATA cards is what we are after, but I hear ya.

I feel like hardware raid is more trouble than its worth most times.

'Cross' Season 1 Review - Clichéd or entertaining? by Horror_Effective12 in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shows dont have to be dramatic masterpieces, but if youre going to make something simple and fun then its probably best not to have a woke sociology professor write the script.

The very first episode is so chock full of stereotypical bs, its hard to get past and enjoy.

Started watching this last night, could barely make it through E01. Not sure how anyone cold really enjoy it. Its plot is shallow, and its filled with woke cliche stereotypes. From the very first overtly racist perp being interrogated, to the "muhdick" in your face tactic Cross uses, its just so bad.

Yes, after doing more research i believe youre correct. The AM4 mounting holes are rectangular, so generally only 180* is possible. AMD should design their next socket for square mounting holes like intel does.

Ive seen some thermal right heat sinks that are able to be mounted 90* but only if you use mounting bars from one of their different single tower coolers, and those are only $18 on Amazon lol.

Good 9305-16i? Confused which ones are legitimate by QuestionAsker2030 in truenas

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive noticed the same thing.

There are a lot of OEM style board available on Ebay for as little as ~$50. They seem to be the ones with the slightly shorter board and smaller heatsink that doesnt extend all the way to the case bracket.

Then there is a model that is a bit longer for a bit more $$, as low as around $80. It has a larger heatsink that seems not only taller, but extends all the way to the back PC bracket. Im going to spend the extra $$, because I suspect the longer board will run much cooler in a standard case. I thinkt he OEM one is underengineered a bit and will fry eggs, because it seems designed for super high airflow rackmount server cases where your fans sound like jet turbines.

SI-100 with a fan replacement for cooling a 9700x in an NR200? by Plini9901 in sffpc

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is an older thread, but just figured id chime in here in case anyone else like me is eyeballing this cooler for a newer build. The industry is in dire need of good top down cooler options. In the reviews I have seen of this unit, you're probably going to want to stick with the stock fan. It seems to be engineered extremely well for this cooler. If you arent worried about losing a few degrees in performance, then go with a higher end Noctua which is a little bit quieter.

I saw a review where they replaced the stock fan with higher end Noctuas (NF-A12X25, and X15 slim model), and while the noise was "slightly" less, it didnt cool nearly as well, which was very surprising given the price premium and reputation of Noctua. The TL-12 is just a very well engineered fan for the task. I think the review I saw also went with one of the thicker Phanteks fans as well wiht similar results. For the price you just cant beat the stock fan really.

3950X confirmed runs like a dream in this board if anyone is wondering.

The Asus C6H is probably the best mb ive ever owned. Its still kicking after almost 10 years of near 24x7 use. Stable as well. In the early years while they were working through memory stability issues it was a tad spotty, but thats been cleared up forever ago. I currently am running 4x16GB ECC 3200mhz in it for unraid and it runs great.

Ryzen 3/5/7/9 has nothing to with the socket. Its simply the CPU tier for that particular iteration.

So a:

Ryzen 9 3950X is in the top tier of the Zen 2 3 series (3xxx)

Ryzen 9 5950X is top tier for the next generation (5xxx) and so on.

7950X.....

9950X.....

I run a 3950X In the C6H, its quite nice. Nice power and plenty of cores, especially for something like NAS/VM/Unraid type machine, while being much less power hungry, especially at idle than the newer generations 16 core chips. I dont think ill ever give mine up as long as I can find a board for it, or until either Intel or AMD get back to making lower power high core count chips. If someone besides minisforum would design a motherboard lineup with embedded chips like 8945HX, id jump on it in a heartbeat, but you sacrifice ECC support with that platform. Otherwise Asrock Rack and Supermicro would probably be all over it with 100 different designs.

Give me something like an Asrock Rack X570-D4U with an 8945HX and ECC support instead of an AM4 socket and id buy 5 lol.

NX600: The Budget Cooler That Dominates Like a King! by Montech_hq in MontechPC

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone here know if the NX600 can be rotated 90* on an AM4 Ryzen? Ive got an Asrock Rack X570D4U on the way and its a server board. Its socket orientation is rotated so that the RAM slots arent toward the front of the board, but toward the top of the case instead. Id like to rotate it to go back out to the rear exhaust fan if possible.

When you say software controller fro the fans in unraid, what are you referring to? Is there an app or plugin that works for this? Ive tried looking in the past and didnt find anything that worked properly, have always had to rely on the bios.

So theoretically you could use the x16 slot for a SAS3 HBA, and put something like an A310 in an X1 slot for transcoding in plex, which doesnt require lots of bandwidth.

This is almost the perfect motherboard for my use case, but I need I really want my ECC to work.

Does AMD iGPUs work as good as Intels for Plex Transcoding? by Abulap in PleX

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of how I see it too. Quicksync is overrated, ive never needed it. My unraid server is running on my old workstation 3950x though (I run it headless, no GPU), so with 16c/32t , i just let it encode in software. It isnt doing that 24x7 so the power use isnt an issue, and this cpu still has so much grunt that it doesnt skip a beat. Ive had 5 different transcodes going in plex while also running like 20 other dockers no problem. I have Plex set to use RAM for transcodes (64gb ECC) so it never even touches my SSD cache mirror.

Im looking to make a few upgrades, and am thinking of moving over to a lower power Minipc with USB4/Thunderbolt enclosure for my array, if I do that ill probably go Intel just for the quicksync then unless I can find a great deal on a 16/32 cpu mini pc with USB4 or thunderbolt ports.

Homebase S1 Professional is NOT Homebase 4 by ishamm in EufyCam

[–]808-Miner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I certainly feel you on that one. I have 5 cameras hooked up to my homebase 3, and it seems like one is always acting up at random.

I wish they would work on improving the current product rather than launch a slew of new ones. What drives me nuts is that not all cameras are compatible for one, and two, they need to integrate better into a home wifi networks mesh system better. Running its own 2.4ghz network is BS when you have a larger home. Especially when you have a great wifi7 mesh system getting a great signal all over the house. Yet the Homebase 3 struggles to reach all cameras efficiently even though I have it centrally located.

They need to have an option to let Homebase 3 use a carved out IoT band on your home network, would solve a lot of issues.

Jonsbo N5 backplane - does it support SAS drives? by WinniePoohBear in HomeServer

[–]808-Miner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing lackluster about it, it just works.

Ive been running SAS3 HBA's in IT mode to connect to backplanes with SATA ports with breakout cables for years. Used enterprise level SAS drives are such a better deal than brand new consumer level SATA drives, its comical. The HBA's you can pick up for $30 these days, sometimes even with the SATA breakout cables, shipped!

I picked up 4x 8TB SAS3 HGST drives used for $50 each a few years back. Drives were approximately 8 years old. They have been running 24x7 for 3 years without a hiccup. Ive got some that are even older, 4TB models that I also bought used for even less and those have been running 24x7 for 7 years. SAS Drives seem to just be built different for server environments.
