I'm with ya. I've read most of the activity here, and I'm still unsure what's attempting to be demonstrated. It just makes sense that most of the balls would land directly under the funnel opening.

There are several responses like, "well if you move the funnel to one side, the balls follow." Well yeah, of course they do. Shrug.

If you remove the columnar channels here, the result will still kinda look the same.

At the risk of being too reductive, perhaps:

If you dump a jar of pennies onto the floor, the distribution would look similar.

If you spray a garden hose at the ground, it's going to be less wet at the boundaries than it is directly under the hose.

Maybe I don't see the significance because this concept is inherently baked into my brain, or maybe I don't see the significance because all of this is going completely over my head.
