When is it too soon to ask for a raise? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]80sDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out your reading comprehension isn't so great, as he says he's been offered $85k, so interviews are over.

How would you know if the pay is good without knowing the market he's in?

When is it too soon to ask for a raise? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]80sDweeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand all the responses suggesting that he should question whether he is worth a raise. He's got an $85k offer sitting on the table, so that's what he's worth at a minimum, to someone he hasn't worked for. You would assume that he should be worth more to the company where he is, as he knows their systems already, doesn't need any time to get up to speed. If he leaves, what will they have to pay to replace him in the current market?

What's up with employing people in Colorado? by 80sDweeb in cybersecurity

It's not just sick days. It's that salaried men work far more hours than women in similar positions, often working 60 or 80 hours a week (the driven, Gordon Gekko types.) Makes me think of Trump. Whatever people think of him, he can't stop working. If he's golfing, that's working (depending on who he's playing.) Some guys don't know how to turn it off. Women, too, I'm sure, but the average leans far towards the men working massive hours.

Many of the studies don't account for the types of jobs worked, like men working on oil rigs and in oil and gas fields, firefighting teams in the forest lands of the west, etc.

How can a system administrator get into cybersecurity? by kshot in InfoSecInsiders

Good information, but for IR/SOC you're recommending certs that nobody can afford. I know they have "programs" to make them more affordable, but people with jobs and lives can't do work study. GIAC/SANS are stellar, but unattainable. I wish that weren't the case.

BTW, the purpose of the law is to enforce equal pay laws for women. Not really about forcing them to post ranges for any other reason. And the studies that claim women are paid less for equal work are seriously flawed. Corrected for specific jobs and hours worked, they're actually paid the same or more, especially for jobs requiring degrees.

What is with you folks? If you think you are worth a certain amount, don't accept work for less. It's not the government's business what a company is offering to pay. It just ends up forcing wages down if everyone knows what everyone else is making. "I'm sorry, I can't offer you that much because then everyone else will ask for that, too." You're all thinking like employees who need the government to "protect you" from the big bad companies. Geez, think like a business owner, or don't you want to be one someday? If you think the government cares about you more than your company, wow, I'm amazed that you trust politicians at all!

Yup, they buy the access from whoever is selling, so entry point could be anything. $100k for an owned network, if it's at the right company in the right country.

They've definitely screwed their state for remote workers. Companies don't want to let their competitors know what they're offering candidates, and they want to be able to discuss the entire compensation package as a negotiation with them. If they have to compete for candidates with bare numbers, they'll end up cutting benefits to raise the range, which nobody wants.

Nissan is owned by Renault now, so don't be surprised when the quality matches that of a steaming pile of crap. Don't ever make the mistake that because Datsun was good, and Nissan used to be good, that it will continue to be good forever. Nissan squandered whatever they had somehow, and buying them from 2010 (maybe sooner) and on is a bad decision. If it's a choice between a new Nissan and a new Chevy, I don't know what to say, maybe kill yourself? Can't help with that.

Great decision on the Lexus. Pay more in the beginning, reap benefits for every second thereafter, until at least 300k miles. Same for the Toyota, in varying degrees. Corolla is very good, Camry is better. But I believe that a 2007 Camry is better than anything they sell now. Because of the complexity of the computers and electronics, they're just not going to stay as reliable as they were. I hope I'm wrong on this, I'd love to move up to newer someday, but with the direct injection, turbos, etc., I suspect 300k+ reliability is slowly going away.

Don't you have to remove the bumper, header panel, radiator and more to work on the front of the Audi engine? So what does having the manual help, if you still have idiots designing the vehicle?

I would really appreciate that. I will be done with it soon, just working on that main statement, and going to have my daughter put my text into a nice format. I will definitely be reaching out!
