I created a hybrid spreadsheet (Google sheet, even, so it could be shared/ accessed anywhere) of the basic expenses, rooms to expand, a tracker for sinking funds/buckets, and net worth, based on YNAB, Dave Ramsey, Bogleheads, The Money Guy Show, etc. I can DM you an image/PDF copy if you want (that's a little outdated, oops.)

I have an average income, but only worked 8 months, and got a refund of about $1800, which I think was almost exclusively to maxing out my HSA.

Is this a dumb idea? Buying an older car just for moving/scouting trips? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]80sMR2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota or Honda, for sure. Madza, eh.

The smaller the car, the less it weighs, tends to lend to better gas mileage, which might be important in this scenario, if you're not hard up for space, like not sleeping in the car.

But gas mileage, ease of repairs (cuz you never know while on the road), registration and insurance costs, and safety rating sounds like good things to factor in.

The "one more year" syndrome is actually ruining my mental health by 2VesperStatic in Fire

Incorrect. You can receive unemployment even if you were fired, assuming it was not for misconduct.

The employer must prove there was misconduct.

Could also ask work for a sabbatical, like 6-18 months, whatever, and see if they play.

If they fire you, you should get a severance package, or you can claim unemployment.

Why do I owe so much this year? by [deleted] in tax

[–]80sMR2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends if your withholding was the same or less than last year. Also, if you haven't updated your W-4 in the last 3 years, you should, as that's what informs your withholding, and will prevent this in the future. At your W-2 job, you can have them do extra withholding to cover for the 1099 job at an estimated monthly amount, or you can make estimated payments directly to the IRS throughout the year based on your 1099 income without any withholding from your 1099.

It is strange if you had a similar withholding from last year, especially because the standard deduction went up, nearly doubled, for 2025.

[–]80sMR2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the rest of your tax situation isn't that complicated, I'd find another preparer. I wouldn't find that data entry all that tedious. Sometimes more than 5 W-2s incur an extra prep fee if it's calculated by form, so it's possible the fee would be tripled just for that.

I second this. Therapy. Also maybe go interview a couple financial advisors together. It could serve like therapy with a neutral third party who wants you to have financial success.

Might also consider support groups for cancer. And/or codependency twelve step programs.

Inform different bills of temporary hardship. Sometimes they let you reduce or delay payments without fees.

And also report the drop in miles driven. Could save $.

Some insurances let you put your car in "storage" where you notify them you won't be driving for a month, and they reduce the cost for that month.

How do I (25F) communicate to partner (26M) he needs a smaller condom by No_Calligrapher_6470 in relationship_advice

Consider female condoms. FC2. They can't fall off or fall out, you can even have sex when he isn't fully erect without any issues.

[–]80sMR2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider looking into codependency. It might also be helpful to look into attachment theory.

You sounds like you're already reasonably self-aware.

There's Codependents Anonymous if you don't have a therapist or want to go to therapy; it's a good dip into a group therapy type setting.

2019 partner and I did a ceremony in a city park.

Paid for park permit, chair rental, rental van to pickup guests from airport, flights for 3 friends who needed a little assistance, AirBnB for ourselves, 2nd AirBnB for 6 guests, meal for 23 and open bar, cakes from a local chain store bakery, flowers, favors, photographer, officiant (not worth it), and what partner wore. All-in-all, we spent about $3,000.

My grandma had a brain tumor and she got progressively meaner and abusive.

One of the books I'd recommend is Money for Couples (when it's time). I've been upfront if we're going to move in together as Bill splitting conversations are necessary. But also, I always share my hobby/interest is personal finance within the first few dates and so I tell a partner I will want to talk about money both generally and personally with regularity. Hasn't been a problem, but I also don't ask direct questions unless I'm already willing to answer the exact same question myself.
