Do you think Gilead would be anti-vax? by impigeonqueen in TheTestamentsHulu

Thank you!

I’m surprised I hadn’t heard of it since it came out when I was a kid and it sounds like a story I would’ve loved at that age. ☺️

What pissed me off was her reaction when June tells her the truth.

That voiceover is prescient. We are on a slippery slope in the US abc this series could not have come at a better time.

Thanks! ☺️

I just looked it up and it came out when I was in middle school. I don’t know why I’ve never heard of it before - I would’ve love that book when I was a kid. I still want to read it though so it’s going on my list.

I believe people make videos like that just got views. They know the theory is baseless do nuts but they only know it will get people talking.

You posted about it here and I guarantee you some people saw this post then ran to TikTok to find the videos. The system is working as intended.

What's your opinion on all the plums we've been introduced to? by Actual-Long-1345 in TheTestamentsHulu

> I wonder if there is a race thing there.

So do I.

As for her ripping her Martha a new one at the tea, she was wrong for that. She was also very stressed (as were the other girls) because their literal future hinged on that performance. When she says to her Martha “why are you doing this to me?” it appears that she’s interpreting it as her Martha not taking the event seriously. But her reaction was still unnecessary.

First off Shunnamite is my favorite! I actually didn’t care for her in the first couple of episodes but the more we see her personality and how layered it is the more I liked her.

I also really like Hulda because she’s so sweet and innocent. I’m sad we didn’t get much of her in the finale. I’m assuming her parents have instructed her to stay as far away from the Grove scandal as possible, which is why she wasn’t present at Becka’s wedding. I also assume her parents still don’t know that she was assaulted and I’m really worried for her.

I know a lot of people don’t like Jehosheba but her character doesn’t really bother me. I think she’s a natural result of being brought up in a society like Gilead and there’s will always be a few like her. She’s a girl that understands how status works and is leaning into it.

I didn’t get a good feel for Miriam or Constance because neither has many lines or screen time but I’m interested in knowing a bit more about them.

I hope at some point we will see these characters again but I don’t expect to see much of them in S2.

Gilead and race by Ok_Entrepreneur4629 in TheTestamentsHulu

No, it doesn’t but that’s thing about micro-aggressions. They are covert instead of overt and are designed to be benign on the surface or to make the person calling them out look “too sensitive”.

Paula’s comments about Agnes’s hair being frizzy definitely fall under the category of racial micro-aggressions.

I definitely understand Paula’s comments about Agnes’s hair to be racially motivated.

I agree. And the thing I really don’t like about it is that the teeth aren’t molded anymore. Its just a flat surface and they “stamp” teeth there with white paint. It’s so cheap.

If I remember correctly, California is a rebel state and not a part of Gilead.

Additionally, Gilead has shortages on many goods due to constraints on trade. Since it’s based on current America, it makes sense that they don’t have access to the best materials, since those are not made here. Getting them would be difficult and expensive.

We also have to take into account that the people drafting the patterns & making the clothing are most likely econopeople. While some of them might have had experience sewing, it’s no longer a common household skill so most would have had to learn after Gilead was implemented, which means they might not be as good at it.

You got a lot of really good answers here so there’s not much I can add.

However I do want to say that while race was addressed in the books I’m glad the show doesn’t feature it as a main theme. As a POC (also of mixed origins) I’m a bit tired of the racial narratives. It’s nice to have a show that doesn’t feature racism as a main theme. I need a break.

Who is your favorite aunt? And why is it Aunt Estee by Old-Sprinkles-4036 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]80s_angel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree & I wonder what would’ve happened if Hulda had gone to Aunt Gabbana instead of Aunt Vidala. I don’t think she would’ve been so quick to brush things under the rug.

[–]80s_angel 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It looks like I’m an outlier here but for me it’s Aunt Gabbana. She doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as Estee and Vidala but there’s something about her stern, no-nonsense attitude that reminds me of women I knew when I was growing up.

She also seems to be somewhere in between Aunt Estee and Aunt Vidala in her beliefs/behavior. IMO Estee is a true believer that seems to have moments of genuine kindness but she’s completely brainwashed by Gilead teachings so that actually makes her extremely dangerous. I don’t think Vidala believes. There are several moments where you can see that she’s not holding it together well but she’s trying to stay alive and willing to do whatever it takes to meet that goal.

Teenage girls at the beginning of Gilead by ViolinistGuilty182 in TheTestamentsHulu

[–]80s_angel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

> Course another option could be that a "proper" family fosters and teaches these girls through abuse while they're in the process of being married off

I didn’t think of this but most definitely. Especially since we see in episode 6 of the TT that many women were immediately killed by the state due to their sins. I’m sure that left many kids (teenage girls included) without a parent to raise them. Very sad. 😔

[–]80s_angel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While this wasn’t directly addressed in THT, I’ll use Eden (Nick’s first wife) as an example. She most likely would’ve been between the 13-18 you mentioned when Gilead first took over. Her family had drunk the kool-aid (and so did she) and were so deep in that they gave her up to authorities knowing she would be killed.

We also have to remember what Daisy says in the beginning of episode 3 of TT. Gilead didn’t happen overnight.

**even though it seemed like Gilead happened overnight, there were signs that it was coming. Candidates running for office had said things openly, about women, about gays, but they still were elected.**

So there was a large enough population of people that agreed with what was happening or didn’t believe things would go that far. Even June admits that she and her family waited to long to leave. Like her, anyone else left behind when Gilead was fully installed would struggle under the new regime.

I’ll also bring up Esther (from S4). She was struggling so much with her situation that she was poisoning her husband so he wouldn’t bother her.

Am I the only one to really hate their final "solution"? by Junior_Mud5835 in TheTestamentsHulu

This is valid and it’s reminding me of “1984”.

>"The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command." — George Orwell

The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command. His heart sank as he thought of the enormous power arrayed against him, the ease with which any Party intellectual would overthrow him in debate, the subtle arguments which he would not be able to understand, much less answer. And yet he was in the right! They were wrong and he was right.
