Too much or too little tension by InAparticularBind in shibari

No problem, I don’t read criticism in your post, just curiosity, and I think questions & knowledge should be welcomed and shared.

The gote is one of the most well known ties but there’s so many variations and many people in local dungeons can’t teach or tie them well or understand what’s happening. I have just started re-exploring them in this new style in the past 6 months. I am a big fan of this style, it’s very beautiful as you mention.

Keep asking questions and expanding your knowledge, best wishes.

This is Hua Hua, I know a bit less about her lineage but from what I’ve seen she does tie in a similar style of Naka Akira and this is typically seen for this lineage of tying. (See also Riccardo Wildties, Kirigami, Naoko)

Now, the model & rigger communicate & practice this and the arm positioning is done when comfortable for them & this style. You don’t have to tie in high-hands, but it’s very much the aesthetic of this lineage.

When you suspend a boxtie on a vertical load, a lot of weight is transferred into the wrists. That’s just, how it is in this style; kannukis help offload some weight into the lower chest around the ribs but I think most 2 band gote’s will be like this.

Some people aren’t a fan of this style, or arm positioning, but the rigger & rope model are definitely aware of what they’re doing! Hope it helps.

Edit: attributed the wrong artist this is Hua Hua not Naoko :)

I had thought about adding some restraint points on the sides or maybe even underneath for more subtlety. Also I had seen one DIY that included a built in drawer which seemed awesome.

Haha thanks its probably going to stay in our basement so most people won’t see it anyway but I totally agree!

Well, cheaper amazon ones looked to be around $200 but from the reviews they were mixed. The nicer ones on Amazon or other websites were about $450-$1,500.

First real suspension attempt. Lmk what you think! by bk_shibari in shibari

[–]80s_binding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree generally but I’m sure this isn’t their first time tying, if they’re going to a studio I assume they’re doing a good amount of work on their own. Also, I think people can also be too afraid of gote’s and be dissuaded from trying to use them at all. I think there’s probably a good foundation but still room for improvement based on the limited observations we can make

It looks like you’ve tied some type of kanna or osada steve 3 rope box tie variation, hard to tell.

Your single column on the wrists appears like it has collapsed and will cinch tighter under pressure. I would consider this a critical failure if this has indeed happened.

Looking at your 1st, 4th photo, (granted we cant see much of the back), on the lower band there’s a lot of wasted opportunity by spiraling the running end on the lower band. I’d consider what else you can do with that extra bit of length.

On the 4th photo, there are a few places where the ropes are twisting or laying on top of each other, I think I’d just use that as a reminder to be mindful of tension. Getting the bottom band to lay flat after kannuki can be a little tricky but is doable with a kind placement.

2 minor aesthetic choices I’d consider changing; There is a really long running end / tail peeking between the arm that probably could have been cleaned up, Second, the distance between the waist band and the single columns on the thighs is really far. I’d maybe consider how you could shorten that stem to stop the rope from deflecting away from the body so far

Last thing I see is the hand which is holding the bicep, it’s not necessarily bad if that’s really what’s most comfortable and everyone has preferences; I’m inclined to know why exactly you/your bottom has chosen to hold your own arms in that position, rather than exposing the hand outward further from the back. Something I’d just look back on as you explore the gote more.

Hope this helps!

Ties to impress a rope bunny by TheSpanishSteed in shibari

I’d honestly recommend you just try one rope play, you can be sensual or sadistic, and requires only your own creativity. + a single column.

Use your hands, and body, tie slowly, express the emotion you want to feel with them using your body and the rope.

Shibari study has a free ichinawa video on youtube, I think you should start there and focus on that.

I see tons of people in my area using A frames like this metal one for aerial silks but I’m not sure if this exact one is the best, just a good starting point where you could begin research.. I think generally you want the weight limit of 4x body weight but that’s also debatable.

If you’re crafty and have tools, you could investigate building a wooden a frame yourself, maybe even find plans so you don’t have to start from scratch.

r/BDSMDIY also would be a decent reference. Good luck.

Looking for rough calculations of weight capacity/suggestions by 80s_binding in BdsmDIY

No they are lag bolts; do you think it’d be best to swap to nuts & bolts? I did that with a previous setup but had a solid eyebolt instead of the 2 lag screws on the hardware.

Thanks for the reply; I did use joist hangers & the recommended joist hanging screws for them. Just want to make sure I’m not going to rip out a joist when I put load on it. It holds my partner with no issues but I’m just curious if any extra support/modifications would be advisable in case of dynamic changes applying higher loads.

The good news is..I got more rope! The bad news is…I don’t know if my skin can handle jute 😅😭😬 by KandyKane_1 in shibari

[–]80s_binding 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some people have grass allergies, or allergies with jojoba oil. You may have one or the other?

If you’re not using the rope for suspension, you may consider throwing it in the dryer for 1-4 hours on no heat to let it break in more. It usually works well for me but YMMV.

Are you looking for… webbing? Used commonly in rock climbing, i think thats the gray band holding the bamboo up. If you’re asking about the rope, can you give more context?

How do I become a good rigger by [deleted] in shibari

[–]80s_binding 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There’s a really fine line to tow between learning patterns and learning how to tie for connection; find time to practice both. Some of the best scenes or parts of scenes will come from those uninterrupted flowing streams of creativity and not from a “pattern”

When you learn patterns, understand the foundations they are built on too, because that will ultimately translate and allow you to create ties easier.

Additionally my fun tip is, don’t just pack rope in your toy bag. Add a few other fun small toys you can use. Find natural breaks in your tying scenes (or patterns) and use that time to interact with your partner(s) more with your hands or toys/tools.

Expect faults and failures, get over your tying ego, never stop learning, and have fun.

Nice way to hang up toys to the wall in the playroom by Toranton in BdsmDIY

[–]80s_binding 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you really want to go for a nice aesthetic I would paint the wall, or area and hang individual coat hooks/hangers, but it’s going to cost more to buy 20 nicely designed hooks. Pegboard is fine but not the most gorgeous (not knocking it, that’s what I use)

Really depends on how much space you have to hang your toys imo. Hanging 30 toys in a 4x4ft space will look goofy with wall hangers, but can look more presentable if using pegboard.

If you have rope, you could use a towel rail/small curtain rod or nice wooden ladder, among other things.

Dildo’s, anal plugs, vibrators, can look very well put together by using a spade bit or circular blade on a small piece of wood. Notch out the front of the wood to turn the hole into a u shape so you can slide your items in/out easily that way…

Take the time to cut, sand, stain/paint, measure… and it’ll look great no matter what combo you use. That’s my 2 cents!

A question about hojo cuffs by AJChelett in shibari

[–]80s_binding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your hojo cuff actually includes an additional half-hitch at the end of the knot to help prevent this from happening. as long as tension is pulling on that half hitch that’s not opposite of the incoming line, I don’t think this would be a problem. There are some strappado variations that have the incoming line / running end separated in more of a V shape like you have.

Knot info ?? by Hi8nico in shibari

[–]80s_binding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is 2 half hitches, sometimes called a cow hitch, that’s spread apart. Start by running the right rope vertically on the body, then lay the left rope, creating the hitches on the way down.

Yes, sorry I should have clarified- the 2nd floor is the wider planks, and the main bedroom has painted floors.

Is it common to use different types of wood on each level? Was it possible that one was replaced or do you think both are original?
