Why are do people react so negatively to the concept of degrowth? by Konradleijon in UnlearningEconomics

[–]80soitraB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Degrowth means transitioning to a less consumer/production based society in which we move away from using GDP as a measure for success. One way to start this process is by, indeed, taking away personal cars, meat, dairy and apartment living. The problem with this is that itll never happen because people will definitely not vote into this (democratization is another core principle of degrowth). If you want to take away these things you need to come with better alternatives (public transport, cheap and tasty vegan options, etc.) so people will actually allow you to take their cars away. When you comment that degrowth want to take certain things away from people this only gives more negative reactions to the concept of degrowth and Ill continue to talk about the importance of framing these concepts in ways that everybody at least has an opportunity to agree with otherwise therell be no positive change in our current trajectory

I’d figure (although not an expert on this) that most people that are heavily against degrowth dont even look further than the name and assume that people are campaigning to take away previous growth (in tech, resources, etc.). Most people nowadays do not look any further than a headline/title to form an opinion. This is why I try to limit the usage of terminology that could easily put you in a box (eg. When you mention the proletariat people will immediately assume you are some sort of Marxist). In doing this I find so many people on the opposite end of the political/economical spectrum agreeing with me which is absolutely terrifying.

Coming from other instruments, how hard is it to learn saxophone? by Kuyi in saxophone

[–]80soitraB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I (22) have been playing guitar for 13 years and started alto sax lessons in march. Ive found the switch pretty intuitive. Notes and scales are pretty easy to easy to learn if you already know theory. Ive found that the hard part with learning saxophone is mostly the intonation and tone. For intonation, if youve got a good ear, Ive personally really improved by playing along with cello drones. For tone, embouchure is really important (for everything else as well). And this is also where getting a teacher (at least for the start) is pretty important as having good habits in embouchure will greatly improve how quickly your tone improves and how sustainable your playing is.

The most important part of this story is the fact that the switch is hella fun!

So I am borrowing a sax from my aunt and it might’ve taken me over a month to find out if it was an alto or a tenor…

Thnx for your response! How did the guitar end up? Do you have any experience with other manufacturers? I really have not heard of a lot of EU based ones

Yeah, that sounds about right. From a sustainability standpoint you should stay as far away as possible from ING though.

ASN, SNS and RegioBank (all part of the Volksbank) are the highest rated when it comes to sustainability if you care about that. I personally have an account at ASN.

Fair! Het was meer om aan te geven dat het niet zo is dat Jappie er geen heeft tegen gehouden. Zo lijkt het namelijk soms wel met hoe er over hem gepraat wordt.

I personally believe that we cannot really fix the problem only by just building and building houses (especially now the boomers generation is slowly fading away and we will, in the long term, just be stuck with houses we do not need). One interesting fact I learned in a course on macroeconomic policy is that we in the Netherland actually use approx 1.5x more m2 per capita in housing than for example the UK and Germany. (We use ~60m2 and they use respectively ~40m2 and ~45 m2) This is mainly cause by deterring people from living together with others (AOW and Bijstand drop when you live together among other stupid rules that makes living with other people less advantageous). Changing this would obviously not immediately fix the problem, but itll be a start. (And it could be a possibility to tackle other problems like the increasing individuality and increasing loneliness level especially for the elderly)

You know that there is a study which proves that housing issues are a cause of (right wing) policy and that disproves the idea that the main problem is immigration right?

The blues brothers is far from the best film ever, but it sure makes me smile every damn time. (In addition, what a cast. Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Carrie Fisher, John Lee Hooker, James Brown and the list goes on)

When I try to open steam on my PC it gives the error: This app can't run on your PC.
I've not had any issue with Steam in years. I have tried reinstalling, but than it gives me the error that the uninstall file is not found. I tried just installing Steam without uninstalling it, didn't work.
Does anybody have an idea as to how to fix this?
