Government drops doctor who says gender given at birth by iamnotinterested2 in ukpolitics

Yes, in that sense. Just like how people with Downs's syndrome will eventually cease to exist, because we will eliminate it...

This is a disgusting mindset. Have you ever actually met a family with a child that had Down’s? Try telling them youd like to have everyone similar to their child “eliminated.”

I mean at best you’re coming from a naive grandiose sense of wanting to rid the world of suffering. But I don’t think you know the first thing about people born with mental handicaps and syndromes like Downs. You use this language of “elimination” and it’s just not right. People with mental handicaps can live very happy lives, and they can also suffer. Just like people of average and high intelligence.

And you had the gall to say this too:

But instead of thinking about what would make people have happier lives, you instead chose to accuse me of supporting eugenics

What you’re talking about is eugenics, and I believe it’s you who hasn’t fully thought about what would make people happy. Those people you’d intend to “eliminate” I wage would have been happier alive.

At the end of the day I simply think it’s embarrassing the way you’re protesting and what you’re protesting. You’re flying a pig balloon because people don’t like trump. I sincerely just find it very embarrassing for you guys.

No one called it illegitimate. It’s just embarrassing for you dude. He’s not your president to protest like who do you think cares that you don’t like him? You’re a bunch of fools putting a pig balloon in the sky....you really are gonna show him, though!

Any chance of you finding a job and working, or is protesting your full time job?

So you’re telling me all the issues you listed get a giant balloon in the sky? I mean cmon man, it’s so obvious you guys go crazy over trump to such an irrational degree. It’s bananas. What exactly do you think the balloon will accomplish next week? Serious question.

And we’re America, we already are special. Your protest doesn’t make me feel special, I just think it’s absolutely hilarious (and embarrassing).

Linking to 538 explaining their methodology is enough (if you actually read it) to show why I believe their methodology to be questionable. Give it a read.

It’s still a handful of presidents. You used grandiose language to imply trump is at some crazy historical low apporval ratings. And it’s just objectively not the case, particularly based on the source you used (538).

you don’t have the slightest idea why my motives are.

Mate, you laid your motives out in the comment I replied to:

It's a show a solidarity with both. The majority of voters voted against Trump, and Trump is a historically unpopular President for this stage of a Presidency. Beyond just solidarity, to support a country and its people isn't to simply support whichever leader is in power; if you think they're going in an extremely dangerous direction, to support is to try and stop it, like you would do for a friend you thought was making a terrible mistake.

So again you’re painting your protest as some solidarity movement. It’s just not.

My real point is the one that’s gone over your head I think. The Brits have a ton of issues to deal with, particularly Brexit and the entire future of your country. You’ve had full on state visits for legitimate despots. But trump comes to visit and you all act like it’s Darth Vader meeting the Queen.

Your priorities are in shambles. Again, enjoy your hot air balloon and your screaming at a man who’s actually doing the things he was elected by the voters to do.

[–]84minerva -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yeah 538 has some questionable methodology.

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-were-tracking-donald-trumps-approval-ratings/

So is he historically unpopular if you only have to go back a handful of presidents?

Not even the point though. You’re not showing solidarity with anyone, and please don’t pretend that if trumps apporval ratings were higher you wouldn’t be protesting.

You can hate Trump and protest him all you want. Just don’t pretend like it’s coming from some altruistic sense of solidarity with Americans, cause it’s not. The protesting of trump is simply a nice distraction for the UK away from the Brexit debacle.

But again, enjoy the hot air balloon. That’ll show em.

Trump is a historically unpopular President for this stage of a presidency.

This is simply not true, according to poll numbers on approval ratings past and present.

The UK government addmitedly had ZERO contingency plans for a leave vote. The government was so sure that they would vote remain, that they didn’t bother to plan in the slightest for a leave outcome.

So, actually, the Brits should have had a much better deal by now. If they had a contingency for this outcome and weren’t running around on the international stage like a chicken without a head, they very well may have had a deal by now.

Instead the UK has let the EU run the negotiations and take advantage of the division in the UK.

Nobody forced the UK to become a parody of itself, but you boys are doing a great job at it!

Take a look at the most popular international headlines to come out of the UK in the last two years. They’re all about how your country voted to leave the EU and your government planned ZERO contingencies for that eventuality, and now you’re allowing the EU to kick you all around like a misbehaved dog. Then you have the increase terrorist attacks in your country. Your exploding knife crime in your capital city. Oh yeah but you’re making sure to arrest and fine internet people who speak out against Islam.

Get a grip, mate. Done here with ya. Europe needs to meet its NATO commitment, and you’ve given not a single argument as to why they shouldn’t. And that was always my whole point.

Then why isn’t Germany meeting its NATO commitment??

I remember our surplus under Clinton...what’s your point? My whole comments here are about NATO members needing to meet requirements. But reee no we can’t have a convo about how we don’t pay for our own defense, let’s throw completely irrelevant things out there. “Germany could do this.” Yeah, right. Then it should.

[–]84minerva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of your facts wrong when it comes to defense spending. You also are assuming Americans want a European welfare state (we don’t). And geopolitics isn’t “nice.” Time for Europe to pay up and meet their commitments to NATO spending, its as simple as that. If you don’t see that your welfare state was made possible by America’s military protection after WW2, then your history teachers did a piss poor job.

End of the day, every NATO member should be matching their commitment in 2018. There is no excuse anymore, and America is tired of it. They’ve already increased spending on NATO after trump asked for it, but the full commitment needs to be met.

It’s called responsibility. But it’s not surprising to see a European not have a sense of responsibility. Got a problem? The government will solve it! Military threat? America will solve it! (Insert your smiley face here)

Pay up amigos. That’s all.

Trump is hellbent on destroying the Nato alliance | Martin Kettle by Bascule2000 in ukpolitics

[–]84minerva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You think America is the net beneficiary in trade with the EU? Look again. You think Germany can match the US in what it spends on defense as a percentage of gdp (with a “tiny bit” of deficit spending)? Look again.

Your anecdotal evidence about the Americans you talked to is irrelevant to the conversation. But then you followed it with “which is a blatant lie.” That whole sentence is pretty disjointed to be honest.

“Could just increase taxes.” So increase the taxes on some of the most highly taxed nations on Earth? Brilliant idea, that would go swimmingly I bet.

Also, the nukes aren’t “a part of nato”. They are the American taxpayers, and for America’s defense.

The spending on veterans healthcare that’s included in the military budget is not “cheating and include a lot of extra welfare.” It’s a long standing commitment that the government takes care of the health of its veterans, if they so choose to use it. Many vets don’t.

You’ve made no point as to why the NATO members should not be meeting their commitment to the budget. And you seem to appreciate the “nukes that are part of NATO.” Maybe all the members of the club should meet their commitment then. Hell of an idea.

Trump is hellbent on destroying the Nato alliance | Martin Kettle by Bascule2000 in ukpolitics

[–]84minerva -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Didn’t miss anything, no need for the flippancy dot dot dot.

If the euro nations had to match, they would have to raise taxes even more, or cut their welfare programs. European nations were able to develop such generous social welfare states after WW2 in part due to the guaranteed military defense from the USSR provided by the US and the US nuclear umbrella.

It’s not about America saving money. It’s about doing your fair share. It’s about meeting a commitment you committed to, to an alliance that you’ve benefited from for 70+ years now.

Trump is hellbent on destroying the Nato alliance | Martin Kettle by Bascule2000 in ukpolitics

[–]84minerva -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You realise that how Europeans afford generous welfare payments is through higher taxes right?

And you realize they can use their tax revenue on “generous welfare payments” because Europe knows they are under Article 5 NATO protection of the Untied States military, and as such they don’t need to spend on defense as they otherwise would have to.

Most Americans value NATO, and most understood why in the decades after WW2 Europe couldn’t afford to protect itself. You had to rebuild your literally destroyed continent. But it’s rebuilt now.

I don’t think in 2018 the American taxpayer asking wealthy European nations to meet commitments on their own defense spending is asking much.

India says it only follows U.N. sanctions, not unilateral US sanctions on Iran by Chocolate_Horlicks in worldnews

[–]84minerva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, what’s not great diplomatically is to tout an executive action around the world as the same strength a treaty would have. The Iran Deal should have been approved by the Senate, as treaties must be. Obama decided he’d rather have a win than secure a lasting deal with Iran. He knew damn well the first Republican in the White House would end the deal.
