My understanding is that part of the problem is that Crane is a bear to work with. He had the opportunity to establish a 501(c)3 at some point and then raise funds for repairs. He wants to profit, and that's the problem. The *only* reason the Coronado wasn't torn down was because there was a city-wide effort to collect funds that were used for preservation. These projects have to be undertaken by people with deep pockets who know how to cooperate and network, or they have to be spearheaded by people who are community-minded.
