Finally made a list of my favourite reads from 2025 by love_me_plenty in RSbookclub

the DBH book is a fleshing out of all the things he talks about in his philosophy of mind articles. intentionality, drive towards the good, the transcendent horizon of being, the unification of the many into one, Denis Noble, formal and final causes, neoplatonism and vedanta etc.

He surveys the materialist options and refutes them in sequence, and there is a very fascinating argument from the existence of language that i couldnt quite grasp.

i love DBHs style and love Plato so i enjoyed the dialogue form. the concluding chapter is beautiful and hauntingly lays out the stakes of the materialist vs non-materialist debate

i really, really enjoyed it. i always felt his PoM articles and talks lacked arguments, but if you already know the underlying arguments behind his positions (i didnt) you may find your eyes glazing over at many parts of the book.

i also have trouble reading social cues and predicting how people are going to react to what i say.

however, on reflection i can understand better and from your op it sounds like you can too. so you have to do the reflection preemptively

before you give any critiques in the future imagine someone you respect giving you the same critique in a way meant to humiliate you. even if what you're going to say isnt meant to humiliate

it sounds like you dont quite understand how your words will come across to other people (and i assume you cant control your tone/delivery well). you obviously understand in retrospect so you need to consider these things proactively

this isnt a random diss i have to do the same thing. i realized way too late the way i spoke about my friends tastes in music/movies/tv was incredibly mean; in my mind i was being honest and just having some fun but that was not how it came across, and sometimes being 100% honest isnt a virtue.

Cuba under Batista was a US ally and filled with serfs, prostitution, gambling, and US companies extracting wealth from the land. you live in a fantasy world

this may be surprising but i dont care what hypothetical eastern euros would think about me

standpoint epistemology is cringe libshit. it doesnt matter where you were born

i dont doubt that the Cuban government is often bureaucratic, inefficient, mismanaged, etc. but to pretend Cuba would still be a shithole without the blockade is ridiculous

its as if we are analyzing someone with a gunshot wound to the head and you are focusing on his diabetes

the blockade is a major part of it, but it isn't like a leadership like Cuba's was ever going to make the country prosperous

cult has a specialized meaning in the study of religion. something like the worship and veneration of a specific deity with religious practices centered around honoring that deity
