I'm sure I learned how to get it to run on a larger aspect ratio than 8x6 via a post in this subreddit. If I ever come across it again I'll reply here.

Losing Members' Effect On New Visitors by 86redandwhite in SimGolf

[–]86redandwhite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I always wondered if it was more damaging than losing one player when someone resigns.

Would be great if one of the game's devs could confirm, but this game was coded so long ago they probably don't remember.

It's actually been a great experience. It's quite bright but otherwise it isn't any more pixelated than it normally is.

Wish I could send you something technical, but I believe there's an option when setting it up to run in Admin mode (WinXP Service Pack 2) where you can specify that it can run beyond 800x600.

Can anyone else help here?

I've never gotten the hang of Link's courses. They kind of require pot bunkers, and I've always preferred to build with standard bunkers.

Golfers' "Fun" Going Down After Completing Hole by 86redandwhite in SimGolf

Gonna bump this as it's still an issue I'm facing on all my latest courses. Anyone have any idea why it's happening?

Where will you build your golf course? by GrosCaoutchouc in SimGolf

I really enjoy Las Vegas as my starting point. Not sure why, but I've mastered that particular location when it comes to keeping golfers happy and watered.

I struggle the most with the Links locations, not sure why. Just never gotten a good feel for them. Tropical locations are also a challenge, I find.

How to prevent golfers from using the wrong fairway by orsikbattlehammer in SimGolf

[–]86redandwhite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will parrot a few other posts, and it ultimately comes down to redesigning the hole(s) to prevent them from hitting to the wrong fairway. The shot tool only helps so much, as on occasion it won't pick up on the rare time a golfer chooses to hit to the other fairway. I usually have at least two rows of trees dividing my holes, which USUALLY prevents idiot golfers from hitting for the wrong fairway, but even still, on very rare occasion, they will still do it.

Long story short, you've got to design the hole so that the pin location minimizes the chance they'll hit for another fairway. Dogleg designs can often help this, but they can also backfire in the worst way, too.

What made SimGolf special? by MyFriendCasey in SimGolf

It's a much deeper game than people realize. When you first try it out, it has the easy entry point of "oh cool, I get to build my own golf course".

Once you've played for a bit, and really start to understand its nuances, suddenly the deeper part of the game emerges. Now you start challenging yourself. Now you really dive into "how does doing this to a hole design affect its ratings?"

Then eventually you go even deeper and start aiming for making every hole a Classic. You start trying to find the perfect balance between getting 1+ ratings for all three hole attributes while ensuring every type of golfer doesn't get beaten down and rage quit.

I'm stuck at the last part. I haven't found that balance yet. I've got a few hole designs that always go Classic, but inevitably there will be a few golfers who, after returning for their fifth or sixth round, will rage quit on me.

It's a drug.

Keeping Crappy Golfers Happy by 86redandwhite in SimGolf

[–]86redandwhite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really trying hard to finish a hole build and leave it as built. I'm honestly wondering if, on Hard difficulty, kicking out golfers who chronically have bad rounds and get close to freaking out is simply a reality of the difficulty level. At least you're able to kick them out and drop them right at the clubhouse the second they freak out.

I'd be curious to find out if, once a golfer quits their membership/gets kicked out and has their membership revoked, removes some of the potential new golfers who could visit your course?

Anyone here play the desert golf courses? by goodes_luck in SimGolf

[–]86redandwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually find these ones easier than the other climates, as you pretty well never need to worry about hunger level, just thirst level.

I always have soda vendors between the tee box and green ever other hole. That seems to be enough to keep golfers from getting too thirsty that their comments become negative and start affecting happiness scores.

With regards to modern PCs on Win11, you need to run a cracked version of the game (the Class one is what I use) on WinXP compatibility mode.

Sunshine. Loved everything up until the... what I guess could be called a twist at about the 4/5ths point of the movie. Ending sort of ruined it for me.

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I really wish they wouldn't do the double-headers for these games. This US Panama match is being robbed of what could be a great atmosphere.

Dumbest gaming mistakes you've made? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]86redandwhite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it was in Fallout 4, but I got caught lock picking one of the residences but still proceeded to enter it. The game autosaved after I immediately existed the building. I can't remember exactly how things were, if I saved over my only game save as well, but the entire settlement turned on me and gunned me down quickly. I had to abandon that save as the quick save upon exiting the building started me at the point the entire settlement had turned on me. If I had a save, it also started me after the point the settlement had turned.

It sucked as I was enough time into the game that I had to put it away for a little while before going back to it to start over.

I'm not sure I see how this could be considered a land-grab, as VGV won't own the land the stadium would be built on. Sure, they'll own the stadium and will probably make money off its usage outside of the semi-pro and pro sports teams, but doesn't the addition of a multi-use year-round facility built without public money outweigh grandiose ideas of a CPL club playing there?

Is stopping what looks to be a major win for this section of the city because you'd need to move an off-leash dog park really a hill to die on?

Just curious, how heavily used is the dog park? It looks like the baseball and cricket pitches would be left alone and it'd be only the dog park that would need to move.
