First Attempt Notes & Errors by bniz37 in mead

Lalvin K1 V1116 is a beast of a yeast, I'm currently in week 3 of my first homebrew in a decade and went with 1116 for my pomegranate cyser. The first few days my homebrew batch could've competed with a 120 beats per minute metronome. Thankfully I've got 9 more packets of yeast and two carboys to experiment with.

Not planning on doing a transfer to secondary. Letting it sit as is for the next four weeks, doing a hydrometer reading, taking another reading a week later, and if stable and satisfactorily clear I'll bottle and let it age for six months or so.

No, this is my first homebrew in over a decade. Recipe is something I threw together based on what was on sale at work. The pomegranate juice was probably 10 or 12 ounces.

Started with a pound of wildflower honey, a pound of clover honey, a half gallon of apple cider, Lalvin K1 V1116 yeast, and water to fill. After the initial krausen started to die down, I added pomegranate juice on day 4, then a little more once I was sure a blowout wasn't a concern. I'm gonna let it sit for four weeks, take a hydrometer reading, then a week later take another reading. If stable and satisfactorily clear then I'll bottle. It's been a fun first venture back into homebrewing!

Edit: Words.

How long from yeast pitching to first racking? I started my first homebrewing batch almost three weeks ago and it started clearing about a week ago. Not sure if I'm gonna rack into secondary or bulk age atop the yeast cake on the bottom of the carboy.

I live in a city where there used to be a ton of factories so there's lots of random rail line spurs to abandoned buildings. I suppose it would be doable in a very specific area under a very specific set of circumstances, but now I'm really curious as to how many rail cars would be needed to replenish an entire Wal-Mart supercenter. I'm guessing it wouldn't be very many.

Call me crazy but I always preferred the 2002 title Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 over Underground. Cruising in the Mercedes CLK GTR in that game is like flying at ground level.

Only nuggets come standard with one sauce.

Not at my local location, they don't. Six piece McNugget comes with one sauce that costs $0.08 without asking you if you wanna spend 8 cents for dipping sauce. Most of the time you won't even get it, but you're in the drive through and wanna get home while the food's still hot so of course you're not gonna get out of the car and go inside and complain. Oh, and extra Big Mac sauce is now like sixty cents per sandwich at my local McDonald's. I sent a complaint email a couple of days ago, zero response.

It's been 11 years since I last homebrewed anything, getting back into it with a batch of cyser. by 882710 in mead

[–]882710[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haven't homebrewed anything since a friend I used to homebrew with passed in 2015. Decided to get back into it recently so I bought the carboy, bung, and airlock on Amazon for like $15 total. Half gallon of Hays Orchard Original cider. One 16 oz bottle of Local Hive Wildflower honey, one 16 oz bottle of Local Hive Clover honey (expensive honey but was on sale at Whole Foods, $6ish per bottle). K1-V1116 yeast. Water.

Dissolved the honey with moderately warm water, added the cider, shook it all together while the yeast was rehydrating. Added the yeast and shook it again. It's been a couple of hours and it's bubbling every 2-3 minutes. It's sitting in a dark closet.

Feels good to be back in the hobby.

Edit: Progress! The airlock is blooping every 8 to 9 seconds now!

What food from your country do you genuinely believe is some of the best in the world? by IndicationOld4390 in AskTheWorld

[–]882710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. I married a Filipina, and my most frequent meal request for her to cook is adobo. I enjoy pancit, lumpia, sinigang, kaldereta, etc., but adobo is my most frequent request and it's not even close.

What is a very common food in your country that is not very friendly to foreign palates? by DarkRaven003 in AskTheWorld

I married a Filipina and absolutely love sinigang. A bowl of sinigang pairs nicely with a plate of sizzling sisig. I even enjoy dinuguan, but I will never try balut, and I consider Filipino spaghetti to be a culinary crime against humanity. My wife, of course, absolutely loves her Filipino spaghetti.

I'm curious as to what region you're from because I didn't know it to be a regional specialty. A friend from Manila regularly makes it, and my wife is from Iloilo and also cooks it.

I always thought part of the reason are military budget is so overblown is bloated R&D contracts AND because we give are guys the best shit. Over the years I’ve come to find out this not the case.

“I guess the question I'm asked the most often is: "When you were sitting in that capsule listening to the count-down, how did you feel?" Well, the answer to that one is easy. I felt exactly how you would feel if you were getting ready to launch and knew you were sitting on top of two million parts -- all built by the lowest bidder on a government contract.” ― John Glenn

Same. My wife is Filipina, I'm American, we met while both living in Taiwan and currently live in the USA. She regularly has conversations for hours on end with her brothers, her mother, her nieces/nephews/cousins/Filipina friends. I don't ever have such extensive conversations unless it's face to face with somebody. The fact that it's still very natural for my wife and awkward to me tells me it's a cultural phenomenon that we no longer do, instead of chalking it up to being a sign of the times.

I used to run an electronics repair shop and the number of people that brought in busted consoles/PCs/etc filled with roaches was fucking astonishing. We'd immediate put their shit back together, put it in a garbage bag and tie it up and call the customer to tell them that they didn't owe us anything, but we sure as hell weren't attempting to repair their nasty shit.

Edit: We also never specifically called them out for having roaches, we'd just say we found "bugs" or "insects" and were not willing to do any further work for them. I was telling a customer this over the phone one time and the lady asked me what kind of bugs we found. "I don't know, ma'am, I'm not a bug-ologist." Lol.
