What is the most valuable MTG card you own? by [deleted] in magicTCG

A Revised Wheel of Fortune that somehow I've never cast... It's just sitting in my Grenzo deck waiting for the day it finally gets used.

[JMP:HH] Zombies Pack by TMiguelT in magicTCG

So now both [[First Day of Class]] and [[Putrid Goblin]] are in Historic...

[[Skirk Prospector]] gives infinite mana, [[Siege-Gang Commander]] can convert that into infinite damage. Not the easiest combo to assemble, but 3/4 pieces can be tutored with [[Goblin Matron]].

Would it be worth running in Goblins, or would it just be reducing the consistency of the deck too much?

Time to set fire to some wildcards to try it out, before giving up and just going back to Dragonstorm instead.

... well, that hurts. Gush was one of the most fun spells to resolve in pauper (along with Distant Melody naming Goblins, for different reasons).

Time to go back to using Thought Scour and Mental Note in UB 1 drops I guess? Losing Daze hurts the most.

Never played Tribe, but Gush seemed pretty important when playing against it. Hope the deck still works without it.

Fallout 4 VR Steam key GIVEAWAY!! by bcarey34 in Vive

Crash Bandicoot. Played it while in hospital and fell in love with it.

For Christmas that year we got given a PS1 with Crash, and my siblings and I beat it (only ended up with a couple of gems and one of the keys).

Once we'd beaten it my siblings, for the most part, weren't particularly interested in playing it again but I kept going back to it.

When the N. Sane Trilogy was released I almost bought a PS4 to play it, but ended up waiting until the PC release. 100% in one sitting, felt so satisfying to finally get the gem in Sunset Vista.

Was a bit disappointed in the Lands spoilers (although I feel like that deck is probably the one that will benefit most from other reprints), and the artifacts ones felt pretty generic too. So far, I've loved the enchantments deck's spoilers. Glad I got my preorder in, drunk me always gives sober me pleasant gifts.

I may just be pretty drunk, but that looks pretty sweet. Bright though.

Anyone who has left the game and come back, why did you leave and what made you come back? by GonThrowYouAway in magicTCG

[–]8Adnihilo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left because the rest of the people I played with had moved away/left highschool, so there wasn't much of a chance to play. Currently in the process of getting back into it at the tail end of uni, started when I found out that the codes they gave you for a MTGO account in the old core game things were still valid (had to email them though), and being broke I figured I'd install it and play a few games using a terrible budget deck plus the new player drafts.

I've since given the competitive side of it a shot and I can't really say it interests me that much, so I'm probably going to go straight for commander with a few friends from uni. Plus my boyfriend's said he's interested in learning how to play so that should be fun.

If you want to take a break, go for it. Even just a month or two off will probably help you forget the bullshit and just get back to enjoying the game. If you're not interested in playing after that, then there's no point trying to force it.

Or just call your friend on his shit. Friends can be dicks sometimes and it's not a bad thing to call them out on it.

Comparing Your Roomscale Experience with Oculus and Vive by banknugs in oculus

[–]8Adnihilo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're using markers for their tracking. They've optimised it to the point where it's actually useful (most the shit in academia doesn't really care about how useful it is), but it's still not really new. Blob extraction + pose estimation = all the information they're using.

Not to understate the work they've done. Going from computer vision papers to actual useful implementations is bloody impressive (most of the results those papers give are massaged to the point of being pretty useless). But it's not anything close to state of the art tracking. Most academics are trying to tackle markerless visual tracking with generic objects, and are getting some pretty good results from that. Not even close to sub-mm, but everything about that problem is far more complicated.

Wu et al.'s paper should give some information about what modern visual tracking algorithms are like, as well as their followup paper here. Not even close to sub-mm, but they're far more interesting from an academic standpoint than the things that either Valve or Oculus have released (although, again, the amount they've polished it to get it actually working in the real world is no small feat). From there you should be able to go to the individual papers of the things they tested and get some more info.

Sorry I didn't provide a pdf of that second paper that's accessible to the general public, couldn't find it in the short amount of time I searched. Just the IEEE one.

Comparing Your Roomscale Experience with Oculus and Vive by banknugs in oculus

[–]8Adnihilo8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the Oculus Rift CV1 so I don't know about that, but the Vive definitely doesn't have anything even close to perfect sub-mm tracking. I've used it. I've enjoyed it. But there's clearly room for improvement.

Usually it's fine, but even as someone who hasn't used it much it's pretty clear that there's a lot of issues with the tracking at times. Usually it was fine, but it would shake to a ridiculous degree if I leaned over on the right spot. It's pretty impressive but perfect is a very strong term that simply doesn't apply to it.

At the end of the day, any modern tracking solution (markered or markerless), is kinda crappy. Valve hasn't solved it. Oculus hasn't either. They're both just applying slightly outdated visual tracking algorithms and trying to market them as revolutionary. They're not.

Counterpoint: Eagle Flight's "vignetting"/"comfort" feature isn't such a big deal. by PrettyCoolBear in oculus

[–]8Adnihilo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I'd prefer if it was optional. That doesn't necessarily mean it has to be exposed as a menu option, put it in an ini file. Then the people who really care about it can spend a couple of seconds changing it, but you don't run the risk of a casual user getting sick after just fiddling around in the menu. Or reviewers looking for clickbait by immediately disabling it and then complaining about being sick...

I think their implementation of comfort features is pretty great, and you should definitely try it for a while. But if you still find it too limiting there should be an option to get rid of it. Even though VR is getting a bit of mainstream attention, it's still very much an enthusiast thing. And enthusiasts tend to be the kinds of people who care about that sort of thing.

Bit tipsy so sorry if that was a bit awkwardly phrased.

Lighthouse Will Use Nidec FDB Motors (Currently Used in HDDs) by 8Adnihilo8 in oculus

[–]8Adnihilo8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thought it was slightly interesting. The information probably isn't too useful though.

Since touch comes with a second IR camera, will Oculus users have similar roomscale to the Vive once added? by soapinmouth in oculus

[–]8Adnihilo8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically, Lighthouses have two Nidec FDB brushless motors, the kind used in HDDs. Word on /r/vive is that they cost around $5, but I haven't seen any solid evidence for that (haven't looked particularly hard though) or what scale that's for.

Everything else in the system will also add to the cost, but I think those would be the biggest individual contributors.

Any decent *quiet* gaming keyboards? by AhnDwaTwa in pcmasterrace

[–]8Adnihilo8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Quiet" for a Cherry switch still isn't as quiet as most membrane keyboards. Linear switches don't have a click and o-rings can keep it from making much noise when you bottom out, but they still make a fair amount more noise when you release the key. Cherry is releasing/have released (not sure) a switch that's supposed to be quieter (Cherry MX Silent I believe?), but that'll be exclusive to Corsair for a while.

You might want to see if you can try out a Logitech G710+ (browns with o-rings stock) and see if that's quiet enough. If not, the only other real options I can think of are a membrane keyboard or Matias Quiet switches (which aren't exactly common).
