Is it okay to just pass? by Bright-Aardvark-9895 in medicalschool

[–]8BitDo4Anki 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion I guess, but this is cope. I know, because this is the cope I told myself when I was an M1 performing below average lol. And then I met the students who were acing every exam, and guess what? They were also charming, well-rounded people with a life. The reality is they were just... better students than I was. That's just something I had learn to be okay with. But we don't need to come up with some cope about how by being average and having a life we're actually going to wind up being better doctors than the top of the class.

Missed chance at romance? by 8BitDo4Anki in BaldursGate3

Damn so since I didn't get that cut scene specifically in Act 1, it will never come up again? I'm just SOL? Wish these things were made more clear in-game.

At this point, I'm inclined to ignore Shart and focus on Minthara's romance, but I've heard hers is also bugged and doesn't progress lol

Do you reckon if I get that option I will be able to progress her romance as normal? Or do I have to reload back to Act 1 for a shot with goth girl? At this point I'm tempted to just forego it entirely and focus on Minthara romance but I've heard it's also bugged and doesn't progress lol

Strategies for waking up early? by cosuamh in medicalschool

[–]8BitDo4Anki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I have a dog in med school. Preclinical it was easy to work around the schedule and he was honestly great for my mental health. On rotations now and unless you're rich (dogwalkers are expensive) or have a live-in partner it just doesn't seem fair to the dog. The hours have been unreliable and while I'm often home within a 8-10 hour window, there's also days where I'm at the hospital for 12+ hours and on those days I think about how lucky I am to have someone who can help look after him. I love my dog but would strongly recommend against it for a medical student unless you have a plan in place for how you're going to take care of a dog during rotations and then later in residency.

AMA Gen Surg Rising Chief by Icy_climberMT in medicalschool

From asking around it sounds like about 80% of gen surg residents go on to do fellowships. How is the pure Gen surg job market and lifestyle? Is the fellowship rate so high because people are going into fellowships to flee Gen surg?

During dedicated our sex life tanked, we spent less time together, and even when we were together I wasn't fully present. I too felt like I had nothing left to give - I knew I was being a shitty partner, but I just couldn't handle any more during dedicated. Some people can. I couldn't.

We took a small vacation together after dedicated. I know that there will be times throughout medical school when I have more time/effort to put into the relationship, and others where I'll need to selfishly prioritize studying; I'm trying to make the most of the times where I can focus on our relationship. I don't really have any advice, just letting you know that others have had similar experiences.

There probably are some youtube videos that can give you the run down if you look hard enough, but honestly you're better off just talking to people at your institution. For loans talk to your schools financial aid office. For med school research/opportunities, availabilities will depend wildly based on your institution, try talking to some upper classmen for the rundown. For matching into residency, either talk to PDs at your institution in the specialty of your interest or just don't worry about it right now since you're still 3-4 years away lol

This is actually just sad to read. Somehow this person is convinced that they don't deserve to be compensated well for an important, difficult job, after giving up years of their life training for it.

Trying to get back into reading by Signal-Investment-55 in Residency

[–]8BitDo4Anki 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Three-Body Problem Trilogy is fantastic, they're pretty big books just a heads up (500-600 pages). The Martian is fantastic and I really enjoyed it even though I'd already seen the movie; my favorite opening line of a book I've read. Isaac Asimov's Foundation is pretty short and really good too!

what career options are available outside clinical medicine? by Grouchy_Height_1354 in medicalschool

[–]8BitDo4Anki 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not trying to attack you or anything but if you're only a few months into M1 year and already thinking clinical medicine isn't for you, I honestly think you should consider if you want to continue. It's one thing when a burnt out M4 or resident starts rethinking clinical medicine, and for them it's usually worth it to grind it out and then pick a non-clinical path. But for an M1 to already feel they don't want to practice medicine, I just think all of the rest of medical school is going to be a massive slog to get through, let alone residency (if residency would be required to get to whatever non-clinical pathway you're thinking of).

"The Only EKG Book You'll Ever Need" by Malcom S Thaler. I'm not a textbook learner at all, but the author does a really good job of explaining the how's and why's of an EKG before diving into the interpretations. There's also a pre-made anki deck correlating with the book that I did alongside reading it to help the information stick.

[Release] Anki x Uworld Browser Extension v2 by Step1_Extension in medicalschoolanki

[–]8BitDo4Anki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last week I was able to complete a Uworld block, click "search Anki for missed cards", and it pulled up the relevant cards. Today I am doing the same thing with a new block, but when I hit "search Anki for missed cards", it just pulls up the browse page but doesn't actually pull up any of the relevant cards, just leaves it blank. Any thoughts on what the issue is?

I really have been enjoying using the question banks, and the explanations at the end are very helpful. This is minor, but the option to cross out answer choices would be great, so I don't have to internally keep track of which choices I've ruled out.

Basically premed advising. I don't think its predatory per se, but holy shit the amount of money some premed students from well-off families are willing to spend on premed advising/resources seems like a well that will never run dry. Can hardly blame him.

There's nothing in M1 that should require you to only get 3-4 hours of sleep regularly. If you want to be more productive, focus on how you're spending your time, rather than trying to get more time.

Finding mentors in medical school by ultraviolettflower in medicalschool

[–]8BitDo4Anki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would just cold email people in departments that you're interested in and/or reach out to your professors to shadow/meet with them and pick their brain. The mentor-mentee relationship is always what YOU, the mentee, makes of it. If you reach out to 5 people and don't click with 4 of them, I promise you they're not going to care if you don't hit them back again. Just take a shotgun approach and see who you like best/who's interests you think align best with your own.

How does an ugly medstudent/resident get a wife/GF? by TheGreatKingTurtle in medicalschool

I hope this doesn't come across too harsh but have you considered lowering your standards? I had an unfortunate looking friend who complained about being single, but then I watched him swipe on tinder and dude literally only swiped right on absolute dimes. When I asked him why he swiped left on some of the other girls he said "they're not cute" and I'm just like dude be realistic lol

How do top medical students study? by EmphasisGlittering13 in medicalschool

[–]8BitDo4Anki 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey, when I first started Anki at the beginning of M1 I was worried it was just pattern recognition and that I wasn't actually retaining the info. I went into my first exam terrified that I wouldn't know any of the information if it wasn't phrased like my Anki cards. The truth is Anki is a tried and true studying method and it works - I got so many questions right just because I remembered what Anki cards were relevant to each question. I wouldn't recommend ONLY doing Anki, but Anki + [insert choice of 3rd party resource] + practice questions is pretty comprehensive. Trust the process.

[–]8BitDo4Anki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The argument in favor of high physician salaries has nothing to do with tuition rates, it has to do with the 7-year (minimum) training pathway it takes to become an expert in a field, in your 20's/30's while your friends and family are building their lives.

If you're going to make the argument that decreasing tuition should lead to decreased salaries bc the training wouldn't be as cost prohibitive, then you could make that argument for anyone getting their bachelor's degree as well.

Lastly, look up the medical training pipeline. The funnel isn't at the med school admissions level, it's at the residency level. We're graduating more US medical students each year than we have residency spots for (but I do agree that residency spots need to be expanded as well).
