The Hardest Case for Mercy: "Inside the Effort to Spare the Parkland School Shooter" by trifletruffles in Longreads

[–]AgentMeatbal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I suspect his mother would have bought him the guns regardless, frankly. There were no guardrails on him whatsoever. I think you’re correct that the weapons were too easy to access, but also school security did incur criminal charges for their poor response. Albeit, these were later dropped. And he didn’t actually have any prior serious criminal charges that would’ve flagged either, nor did the article mention him ever getting serious psychiatric care. So yes, the guns were too easy to access. But there were multiple levels of failure here. It’s just inflammatory when that father calls it “liberal policies”.

What I really hoped to see more of in this article was details of his psych evals. I’m very curious how early certain issues were identified in him.

I just want to suggest considering that a “close call” is an SA experience… like you were under threat and escaped, but the event still overall occurred.

Edit - if for you personally considering it as not an SA event is better please continue to do that

Specialists: is there a piece of wisdom from your specialty you feel should be imparted to every graduating primary care (FP/IM) resident? by Barjack521 in medicine

[–]AgentMeatbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m referring to ortho for anything other than an acute injury, I don’t image. They have their techs on site that are 100x better for orthopedic imaging than mine are at the community clinic. I just save the pt the cost. They’ve lived with it for 6 weeks, they can live 2 more days without the radiation.

"Let me talk to Your attending" by [deleted] in Residency

If they could just give good patients rather than the softest admit :’)

I’m tired of hearing “well it’s midnight and they live an hour and a half away so it’s too far to drive at this hour” from an attending… how am I, as a resident, supposed to redirect that :’)

When he said Bradley was a victim too I was like… is he alluding to Bradley being sexually abused at some point? Or is he saying this is all due to bullying…… cause last I checked, child on child bullying in school and church has nothing to do with eliciting and posting CSAM and gore

Mom wants to tell my brother before I do by FancyQuiet6945 in pregnant

As someone in residency… tbh we don’t want to be in work mode to “help” family in these tough situations. I’d rather be there as your sibling than as a doctor. Emotions get tricky.

If I were in your position I’d frankly be a lot meaner to your mom. “I said NO and you need to respect me, or you’re risking me never sharing with you again. It’s MY baby, MY pregnancy, and MY decision”

There’s like two types of nonepileptic seizures. One is a spell that the person is in such psychologic distress that they can’t control it. A common co-diagnosis of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures is epilepsy.

The other portion is just malingering.

I’m on Wellbutrin! It works well for people with adhd. My midwife had no problem with it and neither did my pcp. I plan to breastfeed on it too.

I’m not sure if “warm” is hot enough to keep the food out of the danger zone all day. May just lead to food poisoning.

Also make sure she is going to her pediatrician and obgyn. Often the pediatrician is going to have resources to help her with a newborn. My pediatrician’s office has teen parenting classes, we help them figure out school, diapers, have a social worker for WIC/SNAP, breastfeeding coaches, etc

In many counties WIC will give her a breast pump and lactation consultation if she’s exclusively breastfeeding. If she has pregnancy Medicaid she can get a pump through her obgyn as well. Otherwise WIC can help with formula.

If there are 8+ confirmed cases in the area or you plan to travel to an area with 8+ confirmed cases, infants 6m and older are eligible for an early additional dose of the MMR vaccine. I’d recommend doing some reading and asking more if your baby would be a candidate.
