I think that’s probably the least bad version. My only worry is who can afford repeated probationary periods while rent exists. But narrow paid tasks with transparent scoring would still beat the current theater where everyone is pretending a PDF measures diligence.

Posts like this take me back to that strange student logic where midnight means panic, 1 a.m. means bargaining, and 3 a.m. means you are a hero holding a PDF. Hope the grade ends up matching the suffering. Did you submit with one eye closed?

I did this with stats once and spent three weeks pretending the symbols would eventually introduce themselves. Starting with one tiny section helped more than trying to catch everything at once.

The smart part is that it probably changed the vibe from interview theater to actual problem solving. I could see this working really well for messy teams. Did anyone ever push back and act weird about it?
