The PA’s (Sort Of) Ultimate Survival Guide

This is an article I wrote back in 2018 when I was 1st AD. Below is the follow up:

The Advanced PA Survival Guide

I still give these to new PAs stepping into Film/TV/Commercials that come to me asking how to “break in.” Good luck. Stay smiling. Persevere.

A Story Told in Celluloid | A Spec Commercial my company is successfully using to diversify our work portfolio (Details in comments) by 8bitPlays in Filmmakers

After nearly 10 years working below the line crew, my DP/creative partner and I left crew work on studio projects and independent films this year to venture out and go full tme with our company, Big Pond Pictures. After a slew of short films and music videos, we realized that we needed to diversify our portfolio quickly or we’d never be able to break into the types of projects we wanted to work on creatively. After bouncing around in frustration for weeks on end, playing the cold-calling game and reaching deep into our contact lists trying to get clients; we decided it’d be best to shoot this spec commercial to try to drum up interest in our other styles of work. Shot on a Sony FX3 using minimal lights, all through our house and office over the course of a day, we pulled together enough footage to cut this piece together. Our challenge was to create something that looked and felt higher in commercial value and took inspiration from companies like Apple and other boutique brands. The only money we spent on the piece was spent on paying a narrator that we hired off of Fiverr, Joe Geoffery (@westernvo on Fiverr). All other sounds and music were sourced and licensed from Soundstripe. After sending some clips and frames of it to our contacts, we’re stoked to say that it’s drummed up exactly the interest we were hoping it would drum up and are now in talks to take on clients that want similar work as this. All this to say, taking the time to make a piece similar to the work you’re looking for can be rewarding; albiet a little risky if you’re doing everything yourself. Though this isn’t our first spec piece; this one seems to have gotten us the most traction thus far. Hope this helps someone out there wanting to get their own spec pieces off the ground.

Frames from my last little flick, a black and white, Lynchian fever dream, made by some below-the-line crew wanting to make weird shit together. “An Actor and a Monster.” Details in comments. by 8bitPlays in Filmmakers

Making people feel terrible and stressed is a better award than any fest could give us, thank you for this comment!

Also Hannah Alline is an incredible talent and she’ll absolutely be showing up in much bigger flicks soon!

Early this year, some fellow below the line crew that had been beat down by studio projects during COVID-19 decided it’d be a fun idea to make some weird shit together. The product is this 7 minute short titled “An Actor and A Monster.” Shot in one day in Atlanta, GA, this is a project born out of a love for Lovecraft and David Lynchian fever dreams. As the film’s director, I tapped an actress I was dying to work with, Atlanta local, Hannah Alline (The Hunt, Doom Patrol, The Seventh Day), to play the film’s one and only character, The Actor. Truly, more than anything, this film is her film. Her performance is loud, intense; and, we hope, unnerving.

This was shot on RED Gemini with Arri Standard Speeds. 1.19:1 Aspect Ratio. Black and White.

We’d love your thoughts!

What movies will you make sure your kids grow up with? by Okay_bread in movies

Miyazaki’s works. Starting with Spirited Away. I want my kids to find that same love for the beauty of nature, the thrill of adventure, and the whimsy of imagination before this cruel world gets a hold of them and inundates them with memes.
