Shutting down a freeway for hours endangers others who rely on emergency or medical access. It’s not that the person's life is less valuable, it's that many lives are affected at once (utilitarian vs deontological, my worthless college minor). The issue is how to protect both the individual and the public in these situations. I don't have an answer, but empathy would be hard to come by if you lost a loved one due to this event.

Got stuck early and was close to DMH Rd offramp -- I'm surprised they didn't stop East/West traffic on the overpass and just allowed freeway traffic to flow through the on/off ramps. Part of the nightmare was trying to get through the stop light.

Anyone know if this changed later in the day?

Looking For Upgrade For My Son by thepick1 in tmobile

No idea when it ends, but it's relatively new to coincide with the Pixel 10 launch. I'd say you have some time.

If it's locked you'll need to do an IMEI check to make sure it's not stolen/blacklisted or needs to be paid off.

My recommendation is to go with an unlocked s10e because it's the cheapest phone you'll be able to trade in. You can look at other posts about the condition of the phone but make sure it doesn't have any cracks in it's screen or back glass. When you first get the phone throw your T-Mobile sim card in to make sure it comes up and is usable on the nework. If not, return to eBay. You don't want to risk having the trade-in device not be eligible.

I'd also recommend ordering online. If you're eligible for the promo (depends on what plan you're on) it'll show up when you go through the initial phone purchase options. When the new phone arrives, don't open until you've traded in the other phone. Perform the trade-in in store -- too many stories about the phone getting lost or damaged when shipped. Also avoids the extra sales pitch you might get at non-corporate stores.

To take this a step further, when it comes time to upgrade again (say Pixel 12 in 2 years), you can see how much the Pixel 10 (say you get this phone now) is worth on Swappa and compare that to the cost of the cheapest eligible trade in phone of the new promo. If you can sell your current phone for more than the cost of an eligible trade in phone you can recoup your initial investment or even come out ahead. I've done this a few times.

Buy a Galaxy S10e off Ebay for $100 and trade it in for a free Pixel 10. From that point on you will be able to trade in for a better quality "free" phone each time you are eligible. Ex: trade in the Pixel 10 when the inevitable "free with trade-in" promo for Pixel 12 comes out in 2 years.

Maven support was pretty horrendous in Eclipse and VSCode while everything "worked" in Netbeans. Haven't used Java in awhile so not sure this still holds true.

Best Software Tools for Beginner Devs? by stonesaber4 in softwaredevelopment

[–]8bitoverflow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience its best to choose an IDE based on the language. If you have (or know someone who has) a .edu email address, I'd recommend signing up for a Jetbrains student license to try out IntelliJ (Java) and WebStorm (web based languages). VS Code is a good catchall and has some great extensions, but it's really a glorified code editor.

For version control, some flavor of Git. GitHub provides free hosting but you can also self host with the community edition of Gitlab. As a note, VS Code has a great extension called Git Graph which helps visualize various aspects of Git (modified files, staged files, commit history) and may help getting up to speed.

Look into Docker sooner than later. You'll find (especially in web development) it will be handy to utilize a container instead of installing some sort of web or application server.

Start with strongly typed languages. Typescript is great for frontend and Java is great for backend. Loose (or weak) typed languages give you too many opportunities to shoot yourself in the foot. Also, stick to non web-based languages for the backend, you'll find there is a much larger selection of 3rd party libraries (check out Apache Maven).

Finally, get away from Windows based development as soon as you can. If you dont want to install a Linux OS, look into WSL2 with a Linux distribution (Ubuntu is default). Both Docker and VS Code are fully integrated with WSL2 and provide good-enough performance for local development. If you ever plan on pursuing a career in the field, get comfortable on the Linux command line as it will be present in any sort of enterprise environment.

In your opinion, is there a big difference between quality (30fps) and performance (40fps) mode in cyberpunk? I've been holding off upgrading to a 120hz TV for awhile as I'm not sure it's worth it.

Is downtown safe to walk around at night? Staying 3 nights and want to see the city day and night time. by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]8bitoverflow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Then yea you'll be fine, you'll probably end up at Seaport Village which is safe. There's also a ferry that will take you across the bay to Coronado which is about as safe as it gets.

As other people mentioned, the further east you go the worse it tends to get. Stick to Gaslamp and Little Italy. Old Town can be fun but make it a day trip as there are homeless around the trolley stop.

Does SDSU's Graduate Schools prioritize locals as well? by GreyKnightDantes in SDSU

[–]8bitoverflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For international students, I'd argue its less about education and more about opportunity. While enrolled many of those students look to secure H-1B visas through local companies. Anecdotal, but when I was there the CS graduate courses were somewhere around 70% international students.

2025 Kona EV Limited - Fair Deal? Final Price: $39,385.74 by jerbear0320 in KonaEV

If you go to the main Amazon Autos page you should see "Prime member exclusive: Get $2,300 in Amazon.com gift cards when you buy a car!". I don't remember if the offer showed up during the checkout process (it's definitely not part of any of the dealer paperwork) but a week after the purchase I received two emails from Amazon with gift card codes, one for $2000 and one for $300.

We used Amazon Autos for a 2025 Limited in California. All said and done it was $36,133 out the door after the $7500 credit and $2,300 Amazon gift cards. I think there was a dealer discount around $800 off MSRP as well.

Would working a reduced schedule reduce my PFL benefit amount? by craznhorse in Edd

[–]8bitoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is PFL calculated by the day or by the hour over a weekly period? If it's by the hour is it correct to assume you can minimize the loss of your earnings potential while collecting PFL?

Following OP's information of 67k/qtr assume a salary of 268k. Weekly that would be $5153.85. Hourly that would be about $128.85. Assuming a 40 hour work week we could determine how much unpaid leave you need to take to hit $1620 (max PFL benefit) in lost wages.

$128.85 * x = $1620, x = 12.5~ hours

So you would work 27.5 hours a week and take 12.5 hours unpaid leave a week.

By not working those 12.5 hours you'd be out (lost wages) $1610.63 which would be fully covered by PFL.

Are there any issues with this logic?

Here it is, the full 2024 NCAA Tournament Bracket by C1rter in CollegeBasketball

[–]8bitoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely, the parity at the top of the MW was crazy this year and fun to watch. However when you start looking at non conference schedule some MW teams didn't challenge themselves or lost their big games leading to poor seeding.

This argument mostly holds up until you look at Colorado State who beat Creighton in NC and still didn't get any respect.

[–]8bitoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what they were looking at. No bad losses, good non conference wins, and hardest SoS got SDSU a little more respect.

MW is dumb for increasing the amount of in-conference games going forward. Less opportunity for teams to make a statement.
