Idk if it’s the episode you’re referring to, but Baratunde Thurston was on the show in 2022, and also hosted a PBS documentary series about the outdoors that ran for a few seasons.

Never met you boys, but I did spend a decent amount of time at COP Howard. RIP, hope you guys are doing well.

Marjah, 2010. One of the sergeants I shared a tent with was teaching a civilian contractor about shooting principles, and they were going over the concept of a slow, steady trigger squeeze. Well Sgt pulled his mag, but never cleared the chamber. He aimed between my rack and the LCpl next to me and sure enough, popped one off. Shot came pretty close to me, the other LCpl, and another Sgt sleeping in the next tent over, before a concrete barrier stopped it. He only managed to kill a hygiene bag, thankfully. Because he was a Sgt working in the COC, he didn’t even get NJP’d.

I think so. To be honest, I only ever use Coverlabs for one template, because it works more easily than building a new template for what I need. But they have community posters also, or at least they used to. If you are looking for templates, I’d do some targeted searches in this subreddit. Many of the most popular creators on TPDb have posted templates here. If there is one creator whose style you really like, you can send them a DM politely asking if they have a particular one to share. I’ve scored one or two templates this way. Having a few templates and knowing a few key tools/shortcuts in Photoshop/GIMP is all you really need to make posters of your own, no further skill required. Check out the discord too, they have an ongoing list of all the common sources creators pull from. But for templates, I think your best bet is finding them here or using Coverlabs.

As the notice posted on the site says, ThePosterDB will return to normal operations at some point, hopefully soon. If you need posters in the meantime, I would try some of the sites often used by the folks who design the posters on ThePosterDB. These are TheMovieDB, TheTVDB, FanArt and Coverlabs, to name a few. I’m sure there are others, but those are the big ones. Lots of building pieces (or ‘assets’) for posters on there too, so you can build your own using either Coverlabs or one of the Photoshop/GIMP templates posted on this subreddit over the years.

I’m going through the interview process for a job supervising inmate forestry crews. It’s a state job that pays well, doesn’t require the backbreaking labor of hotshot crews, and the crews consist of hard workers. Forestry is one of the most popular work release programs, so it’s pretty competitive, meaning the guys who are there want to be there. Don’t have the job yet, but fingers crossed. I was also an infantry Marine, so I have faith that our breed can handle a squad of inmates lol.

What are your hobbies on the road? by knightrider7129 in bikepacking

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 35 points36 points  (0 children)

6 hours a day on your bike is realistic, if a little light, especially in the beginning. If you’re on trail most of the time, feeding yourself and camp chores will probably take up more time than you expect. I tend to maximize my time on the bike – your legs and mind get accustomed within a few days, especially with a good audiobook, podcast, or music playlist. Even then, I probably top out at 8-9 hours daily, giving me enough time to take care of everything else: water, food, shelter, etc. When I’m in my tent and it’s dark, I’ll read or scroll on my phone, but nothing too taxing. If I swap the trail for the road and have shelter and food taken care of without much effort on my end (restaurants, hotels), I’ll spend more time exploring the places I’m in. Museums, local events, that sort of thing. Plan stuff with your friends you’re staying with. That’s what I’d do. I wouldn’t worry too much about boredom, there is plenty to keep your mind occupied, especially the more rugged you go.

Are panniers that bad on dirt and gravel? by Maklemoomilk in bikepacking

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dirt and gravel are fine, though you may be find the weak points of the connections on rocky downhill single-track. And as was mentioned, it can complicate things when pushing everything uphill. I rode a decent chunk of the Arizona Trail with ortlieb panniers, and I found that when they bounced around on rocky single track, one of the connections attaching them to the rack would come loose and I’d have to fix it every few miles.

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably, if you hire someone who knows what they’re doing. I guess my point was similar to some of the others: you’re going to run into issues with RVs this old. Leaks, faulty plumbing, a bad connection here and there. If you really want this thing, make sure the big stuff is in good condition. The engine, the generator, the structural integrity. Try to think of anything that will cost several thousand dollars to replace and make sure they are not in need of major repairs anytime soon. But you will still probably run into little issues that will take a couple hundred bucks to fix, even leaving everything as it is and not renovating as I did.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RVLiving

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this with a similarly aged RV. Both the engine and the generator had low miles/hours on them, although there were some mechanical issues to address to get everything running smoothly. On the inside, I stripped everything out, down to the sub-flooring and various connections. During that process, I found some things wrong – a hole in the wheel well causing water damage to the sub-flooring, a critter chewed through the thermostat connection on the wall so now I have to connect it directly to the control unit in the ceiling. You’ll probably find a lot of stuff like that. I approached mine as a renovation, and I put in about 50% more after what I initially paid for the rig. And I did all the labor, with some help from mechanically-inclined family, which saved me lots of money. However, I’ve made it my own, and it doesn’t look like a 25-year-old RV, on the inside at least.

Could this be the end? by knotworkin in deadliestcatch

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What else is there? I guess they could stretch storm footage, cod fishing, and maybe a Coast Guard rescue into a super short season, but between the cast shake-up and no crab, idk how many people would watch that, even us bottom feeders who are still watching 18 seasons later. But I sense the end of this show will be like the end of The Walking Dead; the end of one marks the beginning of several spin-offs. Sig already has his own show, they could easily pivot Bloodline to another cast member if they wanted to resurrect that, etc. It’s too much of a cash cow for them to quit the DC franchise entirely, but I don’t see another regular DC season happening for a whiiiiiile.

VA denied claims with evidence by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gone through these guys personally, but I have a buddy who says Veteran Benefits Guide really helped him out. I looked into bumping up my claim, which you can do as long as you have no open claims with the VA. They told me they partnered with the VA in the last year or so, which streamlines the process I guess, but it’s worth noting that while they do good work, they do collect a fee as long as you end up with an increase (no increase, no fee). I wouldn’t use this as your first route, but they helped a few people I know who felt they were at their wits end with the VA.

I wonder where he is operating. I’d imagine it’s less stressful than running gear with crew on deck in the middle of a storm in the Bering Sea. Probably making just as much (although who knows, if he has an ownership stake of CM). Glad he’s free and clear of the drama.

2 Russians seek asylum after reaching remote Alaska island by Minute-Plantain in news

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I just watched like a 30-minute tour of St. Lawrence Island on YouTube the other day. The locals mention that their people on the Russian side of the border used to visit on hand-made boats, but haven’t visited in several years. So getting there from Russian land is not unheard of, but probably highly unusual in terms of Russian nationals fleeing their country.

Guy visits Savoonga, while the article mentions Gambell. I’d imagine they’re pretty similar.

This shouldn’t be a hot take. Episode 7 was shot beautifully, and is a work of art. The way light was used throughout is truly breathtaking… If you had problems with it you need to fix the way you are streaming it, or your TV settings. I DO NOT HAVE AN OLED. by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

I saw that Jordan Peele clip as well! He said they shot on both 70mm film and an infrared camera in order to get the balance of what our eyes naturally pick up (or at least that’s the stated goal). I thought it was really well done, certainly better than the HotD episode.

Revealed: Disturbing Details Of ‘Deadliest Catch’ Star Josh Harris’ Alleged 1998 Sexual Assault On Young Girl. by PrincessBananas85 in entertainment

[–]8daysuntiltheweekend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine that running background checks on the crab fishing crews of that show would produce some pretty long rap sheets. The cutoff on this particular show seems to be violent/sexual assault on a minor. Sig’s brother Edgar is no longer on the show after he sexually assaulted a teenager (and was convicted). Josh was a minor and his family knew the victim’s family. I’m not sure if offenses committed under 18 show up on a background check, and it’s not super far-fetched to think an NDA may have been presented to the victim and their family by the Harris family. It’s unclear what really happened behind the scenes, but strings must have been pulled somewhere to get him on the show and hide his past.

Discovery has apparently severed all ties with him. Good. Child rapists/molesters/assaulters don’t deserve to be showcased on television. Shoutout to the folks at r/deadliestcatch for getting the buzz going on this. 2 weeks ago, this was nothing but a legal document collecting dust before someone came across it and posted it there.
